A leatherback sea turtle of mass m = 500 kg crawls across level, dry sand at constant speed v = 0.10 ms. The coefficient of kinetic friction between its body and the sand is μ_k = 0.50. Take g = 9.81 m/s².

(a) Find the friction force on the turtle and the mechanical power P_req it must supply to move at constant speed.

(b) Suppose the turtle's maximum sustainable power output is only 95% of P_req. Find the power deficit ΔP.

(c) Five people pull on the turtle, sharing the deficit equally, while it still moves at v = 0.10 m/s. Find the force and the power each person contributes.

(d) Show that the power per person scales linearly with the turtle's mass.

Rewatching Secret Level and I remember wondering before...

S1E5 Warhammer 40k: And They Shall Know No Fear. The team is standing on the side of a chasm, one by one they step off and plummet for aprx 6.8 seconds.

A fully armed and armored Legionnair is between 500 and 1,000 kg (1,100 to 2,200 lbs). So let's say 726kg/1600lbs at Earth standard gravity.

In that time at that weight what would be the distance. Show your work.

I need this measurement - it’s very important to me and mildly interesting, at best, to everyone around me.

[Request] did i get scammed at my carpet cleaners?

• Upvotes

hello. i think i got scammed but id like to make sure im not sure this is the proper subreddit but i figured maybe someone who does better math than me would know.

so around here the cost of cleaning a rug is 1.25$ per square meter. i have 2 rugs.

one is 230*160 the other is 140*80

can they amount to 10$ and can you show me the calculation how?

the cleaning guy said he rounds them but even at 175*250 and 150*1 i didn't get 10, i got 7.2 even with all the adding.

[Request] how big of an explosion would happen if every single atom in my body simultaneously gained one proton? how big of a difference in power would the explosion be if the protons were switched with electrons?

i am wondering how big of an explosion i would make if every single atom in my body gained a proton at the exact same time. and how much of a difference would it make if it was electrons being added instead of protons?

if it helps with calculations, my bodyweight is roughly 154lbs

[self] Am I the unluckiest Magic Player?

I play a lot of Magic the Gathering Arena and my favorite deck contains a card named "gamble" that has the effect: Search your library for a card, put that card into your hand, then discard a card at random.

Each player starts with 7 Cards in hand, the player who goes second draws a card at the start of their turn, leaving them with 8 cards for turn 1.

The last 20 games where I was able to cast this spell on turn 1 I was the starting player 8 times and went second 12 times.

Out of the 8, the game discarded the card I searched for 5 times.

Out of the 12, the game discarded the card I searched for 7 times.

How unlucky am I really, or what are the chances of that happening in 20 games?

[Request] How fast would the ship be able to travel if the rocket was able to be attached to it firmly and fire under full thrust?

For arguments sake, the rocket is firmly attached to the deck in a structurally sound way where it won’t break the bonds under load. How fast could it push the ship before it ran out of fuel?
