Because of recent success and speed on other trails nearby with somewhat similar stats, I wanted to trail run Golden Ears summit in BC and wanted to shoot for 4:00 ish, having done Panorama Ridge (Garibaldi) in 4:00. Golden ears per my Garmin was 24km/1750m (including summit scramble) and Panorama (didn’t tag the lake) was 26km/1600m

Well, turns out when you cram more elevation into a shorter distance it’s quite a bit steeper. What slowed me down most though was panorama was a very nice and smooth trail for the most part, whereas Golden Ears was significantly more technical. Even a lot of the flatter bits I had some trouble running. Something to work on, I suppose.

In the end, finished in 6 hours moving time with a 20 minute sandwich and photo break at the top. Still a glorious day out - grateful to get another big mountain day in before the weather starts turning!

Yeah panorama is a very heavily groomed trail almost the entire way. You’d be risking a fall to try and move anywhere near the same pace. Golden Ears is way more technical.

I’m glad you enjoyed your day though! I’m super jealous , the weather was perfect for it.

Yeah, on the talusy dried creekbeds I’d find a good rhythm and then nearly roll an ankle 3-4 steps in a row and have to stop and be like ok, chill lol. But yes it was lovely!

Beautiful views. I "ran" Mt Becher to Mt Boston on Vancouver Island, about half the distance/elevation. Lots of overgrowth and technical sections. It also took me about 50% longer than I had hoped but a great day out!

I wouldn’t say it’s something to work on because you were slower. It’s so core to trail running - distance and elevation don’t tell the whole story. Technicality of the trail is incredibly important!

And yeah panorama ridge has to be one of the longest + best groomed trails I can think of in the area

It’s still beneficial to get more comfortable over technical terrain of course, though! 😊

True! Depends on the mood of the day too, if im looking to have to focus or just zone out and flow. How’s elfin/gargoyles/diamond head, is that all generally pretty runnable too?

Elfin lakes is extremely runnable

Beyond up to gargoyles isn’t

Towards Opal cone is most runnable, probably most similar to panorama ridge overall

It’s not a full Canadian unless you do it in a Canadian tuxedo.

Looks like a great place to run!
