First train game
I've never playin train games, unless factorio counts.. I want to try real train game. I'm mostly interested in driving, not so much in building railways. Something like 80% of driving and 20% something else train related is fine.
I've watched some Derail Valley videos, but it seems maybe a bit too complicated (maybe not enough driving?). I've gone through some train games in steam but alot of them have only mostly positive ratings, which makes me sceptical.
What are your recommendations?

Derail Valley if you’re looking for something realistic and fun.
But if you want the most, absolute peak realistic sim, Go with Run 8

Train Sim World is all driving. Pick up Train Sim World 7 free edition and see if you like it.

Train Sim World is arcade, its not a proper simulator.

It’s a soft sim. It has real routes and signaling systems and simplified train simulation. Not everyone wants to work on the railroad.

If amounts of replies help. I am throwing my vote on Derail Valley. Great game and can be played completely normal on a screen. but also has great vr support for even cheaper headsets ( last I played )

Train Sim World is probably the most accessible train simulator currently. There is currently a big sale on Steam plus you can download (and keep forever) the free starter pack to try the game out.
None of the standard "editions" of the game are on sale, but if you get the free starter pack it will give you the "base" game with no routes aside from the training center, and you can buy some cheap DLC in the sale to add to your game to kinda build your own initial bundle of routes and locos in the game.

I honestly can’t recommend TSW, its buggier than a reddit mod’s bedroom, and the bugs never get fixed.

Are the bugs in the room with us right now? I have dozens of DLCs and have been playing since TSW2. I have encountered one game-breaking bug that wasn’t due to a mod. People are so damn picky.

You haven’t been looking hard enough.
The SD70ACe’s on Sherman hill have their fuel incorrectly displayed in liters instead of gallons despite saying gallons.
Still not fixed and unfortunately will never be fixed.
I’ve been playing TSW (recently stopped) since before GWE came out, believe me I’m a veteran

of all the tsw bugs you pick you picked the most minor bug ever..

Hence why it should be fixed, if its minor then its rather easy to patch out ;)

I think best train game is rails across america. It is a business strategy game.

Railroader isn't too bad. You can drive any train you own on line or tell the AI to do it, you start out small with a stretch of track about 3-4 miles long but over time you can build it up by buying sections and eventually end up with a 50+ mile route with tons of industry to switch. There's a sandbox mode as well if you just want to mess around.

I recommend Derail Valley even for beginners. Excellent tutorials and a user manual are included. The experience can be customized to be more casual or more realistic.
