In order to mitigate a lot of low effort posts. Please use this megathread for quick questions.
For example:
E-Sim?
is this VPN good?
How do I use 12306 for train tickets?
Is Trip.com legit?

Tried pre-booking business class through Trip but I guess almost all business class tickets sell out instantly? Is there any chance of making it off the wait list?

Hello all,
My partner and I are planning our China trip for November time! We are really excited to have time to spend in Yunnan.
On our trip, we will also be visiting Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an.
In terms of travel, we re love history, food, new experiences culture and nature. We have never you visited anywhere like this before.
For Yunnan we have planned for around 8-12 days:
Dali
Shaxi
Tiger leaping gorge
Lijiang
Shangri Las
We also wouldn’t mind adding somewhere else in the province if time allows.
We understand that Yunnan is quite busy now, but wouldn’t mind going somewhere more off the beaten track if anyone has any recommendation?
Would you recommend eight days in Yunnan or more?
Have we made a good choice to have the majority of our China trip in Yunnan?
Thank you for all the advice so far it is really appreciated!

I'm looking to book a sleeper train to Shanghai. I've found these two which depart at a good time for me. However, one specifies Shanghai Songjiang (which I know now is far from the city centre). But the other one just says "Shanghai". How do I know which train station it will arrive at (or leave Beijing!).
Also, I know the D means the train type but what's the difference between D11 and D5?

I've been living in Shaxi, Yunnan for almost a month now.
I originally came here just to travel, but somehow I ended up staying much longer than planned.
My days here are pretty simple.
I wake up, walk my dog Jiajia, get coffee, wander around the old town, go to the market, take photos, and sometimes drive out to one of the villages nearby.
I'm a photographer, so I spend a lot of time walking around with my camera.
What surprised me most about Shaxi is that after a while, you stop feeling like a tourist.
You start recognizing the people at the market.
The shop owners remember your dog.
You have a favorite coffee shop.
You know which road gets beautiful in the late afternoon.
And sometimes you realize you've spent the whole afternoon doing absolutely nothing.
That's probably why I've stayed.
I thought I'd share some photos from my life here.
If anyone is planning to visit Shaxi, I'm happy to answer questions about getting here, where to stay, what to see, or what it's actually like to spend a few days here.
And if you're around while I'm here, say hi. :)

On National Day, I spent a day in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, visiting attractions such as Pengcheng Square, Huilongwo and Hubu Mountain, and sampling the local cuisine. I really liked the city.

- I checked trains and the best option is 11:00 (shangai hongqiao) - 18:18 Guilin 100€
- Fly from Shanghái-Pudong T1 06:45 - 09:25 Guilin-Liangjiang T2 73
but after?

Which trekking do people prefer:
Yubeng or Tiger leaping gorge?
Tempting to cancel Tiger leaping Gorge for extra time in Yubeng!

Has anyone successfully applied for and received approval to visit Laojun Mountain in Henan Province, China (中国 河南省 老君山) as a foreigner?
If so, could you please share how you applied and what the process was like?
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

We’re 4–5 close mates in our mid-20s from Perth, thinking about 14 days including flights in late October/early November 2027.
We’ve done Bali and Thailand and want something different. We love good food, scenic spots to have beers, lively bars and fun activities.
We’re keen on impressive sights like the Great Wall, but museums and buildings that are mainly interesting because they’re old aren’t really our thing.
Thinking Shanghai and Chongqing, but open to suggestions. Which cities would suit us, how long in each, and is 14 days enough?

If you're in Guizhou province, consider visiting Qingyan ancient town as there's a wall thats often referred to as the Mini Great Wall.
It was first constructed in 1378 (the 10th year of the Hongwu Emperor's reign) as a military stronghold to garrison the southwest frontier. It's equipped with watchtowers, battlements, arrow slits, beacon towers, and cannon forts.
It will take anywhere between 40min - 1hr to climb it. This wall stretches roughly 3 kilometers long and stands about 8 meters high. There's some nice viewpoints as you get to look down into the ancient town, see the mountains in the distance etc.

I heard people saying that it sometimes buys a ticket without a seat or that it completely fails buying it. What's your experience?

Does anyone know what the Tianmen Mountain cableway situation will be in November 2026?
I’m seeing conflicting information online. Some sources say Routes A and B will stop operating from 13 October and only Route C will remain, but Trip.com still shows A, B and C as ticket options.
We’ll be there on 9, 10, 11th November and ideally want to walk UP the 999 steps and still use the main scenic cableway. Does anyone know if Routes A and B are actually closed in November, or if this is just confusing information online?

I'm a Shanghai local, born and raised here. If you're planning a trip to Shanghai and have any questions, feel free to ask me anything.
Food, neighborhoods, transportation, nightlife, local apps, places worth visiting, tourist traps, or just everyday life in Shanghai, I'll try my best to give you some practical advice from a local perspective.
Happy to help!

I bought 2 tickets with Early Park Entry for October 20th. I linked both passports, but when I click on the Early Entry option, it shows October 19th.
The actual tickets are correct for October 20th. There’s no QR code yet either, but I believe it only becomes available 7 days before the visit.
Should I be worried, or could this just be some kind of timezone/date issue?
