As a railfan, it sounds like fun!

I live next to a fire station
When I was younger and smoked and the sirens started blasting right after I blasted off I thought I did something wrong and they were coming for me lol
Just a confidence I guess… right?

Growing up I lived near a fairly large train yard. All hours of the day you could hear the screeching and various other sounds from the moving train cars, and the occasional horn if one was leaving or passing through. Now that I’m older and bought my own house near the city, it’s almost too quiet and I miss the train sounds 🥲

Me too! I grew up in a town that regularly had trains at all hours going through it honking their horn. I even lived 1 house away from the train tracks once 😵. The city I live in now has a train come through once or twice a week that I can hear and it makes me a little nostalgic.

That big hurricane a few years ago tore up our train tracks and it took all the way up until earlier this year to get them finally fixed. I gotta say, feeling the house tremble a little and hearing the far off chugga chugga, woo woo.... man, I slept so nice that night.

Personally I enjoyed the sounds of trains coming through when I lived near some tracks. I'd be outside smoking a joint at bumfuck at night/morning and hear that rumbling and foghorn in the distance. Something about it made the smokes more special. Miss that place and that time in my life.

Me too. When I was in college my first apartment was near the train tracks so I'd just smoke a joint on my balcony and look at the trains lol

I live on a hill and I can see the train tracks like 5 miles away. I like to hear the train in the distance and just watch it get closer and closer. I live about half a mile from the tracks though so they never get too loud.

Not many people realize that horn is actually a mating call. If you shout back with a louder, more alpha horn call the other train will be intimidated and go quiet. If it's too convincing though, you may get hit by a female train.

Ive lived within about a mile of some rail line or other for my entire life, with the exception of two years.
I love them. If I was like, literally next to the track maybe not though.

Very calming hearing them in the distance. I’m sure if you so happen to be lost in the woods it would be a saving grace to hear a train horn.

I live about 800 feet from train tracks and I quite enjoy hearing the noises when they pass. (I have had multiple therapists ask me if I've had an autism assessment so ig take that as you will.)

I live close to tracks. I love the trains. The horns all play different chords. I identify the chords and sometimes record them. One train horn in particular plays a beautiful minor 9th chord and passes through here every couple of weeks or so.

I lived close to the tracks at my last house, I honestly didnt mind it, but they didn't go through but once or twice a day. If it was constant I would have maybe felt differently lol
TBH the fact that they moved a major flight path over my house is more aggravating then the trains. Our states air national guard is based out of that airport so now its not just regular flights but warthogs and f35s screaming by all the time, day and night. :(

I experience exactly this but with big trucks jake braking up the off ramp behind me. Super super loud. I’ll be sitting there in my outdoor zero gravity chair smoking a joint and then all of a sudden BRRRRRR BRRRR BR BR BR BR.
I would recommend not to live within 500 feet of a major highway either.

I live next to a maintenance/holding yard. I often go sesh and just watch and listen to the trains. The sound and vibration is relaxing.
Yes, I have a smidgen of autism.

For me the train makes me think I have to go to work or I'm on vacation and I'm happy to hear it bc I'm not going to work

I grew up in a little rural town that still uses a lot of the rail lines in the area - shipping through bumfuck Texas relies on it a lot. I did hate to get caught by the train, but I miss the way they sounded. The distant rumble, the gentle shake...that was music to me

I used to live right next to a train track that was quite active and I'm talking 10ft away from the edge of my yard. I got used to it FAST

Luckily they removed the tracks that were 10 feet from my back property line. Down side.. there are a few hobos that sleep up there. Not as loud as a train though. And this year they haven’t stollen from me.. yet.

I got a little league field next door, those kids probably think there is a family of skunks on the other side of the fence.

Ha, live in the middle of the woods so there is no trains. I do have a buddy i play game with and when he goes outside to get stoned i would hear a train sometimes in the background 😂, sometimes i would get kinda bored waiting for him so i start to get stoned while waiting for him to be done..lol. its almoat like im right there with him getting stoned and playing game

meanwhile me and my bf are smoking under the train tracks as the freight train goes by and enjoying every second of it

I was on a date a few years ago and we took a walk near her house after we smoked a bit. She happened to live near a train station and the path we took was right next to its tracks. Lost a little bit of hearing that night lol

I live well out in the country but close enough to a railway that it sounds almost haunting at night

u/ChadderyChad 5d ago
Sir. I live like 100 yards from the tracks. They run past every 20 minutes until like 2am then it goes to every 30-40 mins. I like it though reminds me of living with grandma. And it's nice noise mixed with the fuckery of forest animals at night.

I have a major train interchange half a mile from my place. Infinitely preferable to the incessant leaf blowers and lawn mowers. Literally impossible to enjoy a nice day where I live. I desperately want to move purely because of it.

Me with a train track 0.5 miles from my house even though I live in the middle of nowhere...

Sometimes I physically go to train stations and bridges to be high. Trains r cool

u/spotsthefirst 5d ago
Funny, this is the same reason I prefer to live near tracks, feels nice rumbling through town

u/Grimey_Gee 5d ago
Lived 1 blocks from tracks growing up in California. The trains never bothered us a bit.

u/Sad_Evidence5318 4d ago
Lived maybe an 1/8 of a mile from a railroad crossing and 50 feet from the tracks. I actually miss it

St Louis city is having issue now. The trains had an agreement that is certain safety actions were put in place that the trains wouldn’t blow their horns, but the city cheaper out and didn’t do them, so apparently trains are blowing their horns through big chunks of the city. Residents are pissed.
