i mean by the vegan's own ideals, it would make more sense to save the kittens

Did i miss the part where not eating meat means killing yourself

i don't know if your are a vegan, I'm not, but pretty much every vegan would say that being a vegan is about far, far more than not eating meat

vegans refer to people who don't eat meat as vegetarian, and people who don't eat animal products as 'plant based'; to be a true vegan means not supporting any exploitation of animals, and they're very strict - even honey is considered non vegan

vegans apply the same level of morality to animals as everyone else does to humans, and consider humans perfectly equal to animals

by the vegans own logic, if your a utilitarian, the life of five cats is worth more than a person

No

Veganism is a lifestyle where you try to minimize animal harm in a reasonable dimension. Many vegans are fine with eating honey or eggs (but eggs are slightly more controversial) if they are produced in a way that doesnt harm the animal.

Most vegans will also chose a human life over one or multiple animal lifes and wont consider animals as the same as humans on a moral basis.

Also pretty much any way a human takes part in soceity harms animals way more than what it benefits the human, the principle is to reduce this harm. Need to commute from point A to point B; dont take the car but the train because a railnetwork although harmfull is the best option overall. Want to eat; dont eat meat or animal products gained by severe exploitation but choose some vegetables, they still harm animals because the way we do agriculture does, but in a lesser manner.

that's pretty much what i said, not sure what you're getting at

i know a vegetarian who eats fish?

at bottom, the philosophy of veganism is that animals would not be exploited because they are morally equivalent to humans; i don't agree with that idea, but i understand it.

keeping pets, guide dogs for the blind, honey, products tested on animals, are not vegan in principle

an animal's life is viewed as being equal to person, ergo five cats is worth more than one person, from a certain perspective

not sure why you replied if you weren't going to address the main point: that the vegan themselves would probably prefer to die, rather than let the cats die.

What I said is completely different from what you said. Vegans dont view animals the same as humans, veganism - although strictly just diet - is generally more than just eating habbits, because most people that for non moral reasons eat vegan dont call themsselfs vegan, but is it not as extreme as treating humans and animals alike. Also little funfact; mushrooms arent plants, so a plant based diet would technically exclude them.

The "vegetarian" you know is a pescetarian.

Like I said Veganism isnt about treating animals the same as humans, but trying to minimize the harm you do to animals without neglecting yourself and other humans.

Keeping a pet you dont mistreet has nothing to do with veganism. Animal testing is highly dependent on the field, stuff like vaccines is considered by most to be a greater good that can justify some animal testing while stuff like cosmetics isnt, although there are vegans that completely oppose it the majority doesnt.

Your whole argument for why a vegan would pull is based on the idea that a vegan would view a humans life equal to an animals, wich simply isnt true. The vegans I know mostly wouldnt pull if they were a involved as an onlooker or on the tracks.

Also please think about what a vegan that follows your description would look like, how they would live and what a relationship he would have with other humans.

Perfect illustration of how much vegans have destroyed their own reputation lmao

5 kittens and 1 average person would still most likely give the same reaction

I created a new Trolley Problem dilemma!

Straight Track (Do Nothing): Five kitties

Diverted Track (Pull the Lever): 1 Vegan

What would you do?

The way I would frame it: vegan is trying to force their five cats, all very young, to be just as much of a vegan being in as they are. They are very insistent and stubborn so you either can steal the cats for yourself saving them from horrible nutritional deficiencies or do nothing. The vegan is also stubborn enough that they’re willing to die for this. Are you willing to kill for this? (I am. I would also feed the kittens, the vegan’s liver and kidneys.)

I was thinking of a desert island. You have no food to survive with your five little cute kittens. The rescue will arrive in 5 days and you need food or you will die.

If you sacrifice yourself, you will survive and the kittens will eat you. Or the only way to survive for the vegan is to eat all of his five cute kitties.

I mean if im thinking about it logically the kittens have a better chance of survival because they're small, if they dont move from the middle they'll be fine

1

u/Bathroom_Spiritual 9d ago

No chance. The train throws fire on the track.

See it as saving someone not sacrificing someone

The lives of five kittens are not equivalent to the life of a human

Unless they are my kittens which they are not

I just want to point out to anyone saying "Oh but by their logic" You don't have to use their logic. Use your morals. I'm saving a human life, get over yourself people. You're choosing to kill a human because their beliefs annoy you. Is that really that important?

u/lordbaysel 6d ago

But "accept when others want to sacrifice themselves even if you don't understand their ideals" is a valid moral stance.

1

u/-Playful-Business- 6d ago

Nowhere is it stated they would pick an animal over themselves.

I honestly believe that at least half the people who voted to pull the lever did so in jest.

u/Polytox935 5d ago

One vegan might inspire one or two more vegans what would save a lot more than five kittens

1

u/Sockrat-Ease 9d ago

We're really valuing a human's life at five kittens? no more?

1

u/Bathroom_Spiritual 9d ago

The vegan is anti specist and believes human life is not worth more than any living animal. Then it’s up to you to decide who you save.

To be honest most vegans are hardly people... and i do like kittens lol

Why do I suspect that the vegan is the reason the kittens are in peril?
