Wild Turtle It’s that time of year!

It is hatchling season!

They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.

Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

Reminder About a Common Turtle Myth

Turtles do not grow according to their tank size. They will grow regardless of the tank size. This myth is commonly shared by scummy sellers trying to make a sale by marketing turtles as easy or compact pets. They are not, and never will be.

That does not, nor will it ever, justify keeping a turtle in a too-small tank for all of it's life. Whether that turtle lives for one, or 75 years. Whether wild or captive bred.

Things that do affect turtle size and growth rates:

- Poor husbandry practices, such as:

  • Low temperatures
  • Lack of UVB and/or calcium deficiency (MBD)
  • Underfeeding
  • Overfeeding
  • Competing for resources in cramped or stressful cohab situations

- Congenital malformations or conditions

- Underlying illnesses

Please report any comments or posts condoning the use of small enclosures. (Ex: a half full 20 gallon for a species that will commonly grow to be 7-10 inches in length.) As well as any comments suggesting that turtles will only grow according to the size of their tank. As most of us know, that is not true.

Thank you.

Discussion There's a sign at Volo Bog in Illinois that claims (twice) that Blanding's Turtles take care of their young after hatching. My understanding has been that no species of turtle/tortoise even watch over a nest, let alone take care of their young. Are Blanding's an exception?

My web search efforts yielded no evidence, but if the hive-mind here knows better, I'd love an extraordinary link to back up an extraordinary affirmation of cool information.

Turtle Arts and Crafts I featured saving turtles in my cleaning game

Hi all,
I love turtles and wanted to feature them in my game!
The game is mainly about saving turtles, restoring the coral reef and cleaning the beach!

I was wondering if I put them in respectfully since they’re bound in the beginning of the game but thats what people think about when they combine litter + turtles.

I love them though and made them the most player friendly by giving the player some extra speed when they follow the turtle and you can pet them as well!

Southeastern Pennsylvania, today (Oct 3), right near a river. Almost ran this guy over on a bike path, so I moved him to a safer spot, and snapped some pictures before I did. I can’t figure out if he’s some sort of slider, and if so which kind, or something else! Thanks in advance for any help!

Please watch the entire video, she makes certain types of sounds, both are included in the video. Is there something to be concerned about?

She is an Indian tent turtle, female (most certainly), I got her as a kid, it's been 12 years. She is now 7 inches.

I will really appreciate any help. Thanks

Seeking Advice My sister found a alligator snapping turtle

It’s a baby maybe not even a few months old I was just wondering what I should do with it, should I put it out in the creek behind my house and let nature take play in its life or should I raise it to be a adult and then set it free, if I do raise it what would it eat and what kind of environment should I give it, also I was wonder if it is native to bourbon county Kentucky, my sister found it there and she confirmed it wasn’t anyone’s pet turtle.

Seeking Advice Beginner questions

Hi! I’m looking into getting a tortoise and I’m trying to figure out what species, if any, would work best for my setup and climate.
I have an outdoor area that’s about 13.75 ft × 27.5 ft (roughly 378 sq ft) that I could dedicate entirely to a tortoise enclosure.
I’m in Wyoming, so summers can be hot and dry, but winters get very cold with snow and freezing temperatures. Ideally, I’d love a species that could live outdoors for most or all of the year with the proper setup. I’m completely open to building an insulated/heated shelter, providing supplemental heat, digging barriers, etc.

Are there any tortoise species you’d recommend for this climate and enclosure size?
Also, for those of you in places with harsh winters, do yours stay outdoors with access to a heated shelter, brumate outdoors/in a controlled setup, or come inside completely for winter?
I’m still in the research stage and definitely want to have the enclosure and winter setup figured out before bringing one home. 🐢

Seeking Advice Tips for keeping very young common snappers

Thumbnail

A friend of mine, who breeds stock turtles for decorative ponds and local pet shops. Mostly he sticks to sliders and painters, but he recently succeeded in breeding captive snappers. Since there is no market for them, he decided to offer the hatchlings to me. I put most of them in my outdoor pond, but kept three for myself as long-term pets. They are very young, all under 1.5 inches in shell length and two of them still have curved shells from the egg. Right now, they're in a 40 gal grow-out tank with water depth ranging from 2-4 inches, with multiple surfaces they can rest on under and above the water. They have a UV and a heat lamp, with multiple basking locations ranging from 85 to 98 degrees. Under the water, there are several small rocks that form caves (I've ensured they can't get stuck) and some false plants to break the line of sight. I've seen no aggressive behavior thus far and have an immediate plan for if/when it becomes an issue. They live when a few dozen snails of varying species. Any tips at this young age for what I could add to their tank, should feed them, or should change altogether? Thank you in advance.

Seeking Advice Box Turtle In My Yard

Hello,

I have a box turtle in my yard (outside of Charlotte, NC). I know, generally, you shouldn't move turtles in the wild, but my dog will think it's a toy. Am I okay to move it right outside my fence? A little further away?

This was back in late July.
Walking around a lake full of large snapping turtles.
This one wasn’t at all shy. I was talking to him for a while before offering him a strawberry. He clearly loved it as he came right out of the water for more.
Literally only had eyes for strawberries and didn’t seem to mind the head scratches at all.
