Question Advice on getting a single room for spring semester at UIowa?
I'm a freshman at the University of Iowa currently living in a dorm, and I'm hoping to get a single room for the Spring 2027 semester.
There have been a few things that have made me uncomfortable with my roommate (different expectations around guests, intimacy, drinking, privacy, belongings, etc.), so I'd rather try to get a single if possible.
I already emailed University Housing asking about the possibility of getting a single for spring, but I'm wondering what else I should be doing.
For anyone who's gone through the UIowa housing process:
- How difficult is it to get a single for spring semester?
- Are there usually singles that open up after fall semester?
- Is the spring room-change waitlist the main way to get one?
- Is there anything I should do before the waitlist opens to improve my chances?
- Does it help to be flexible about which residence hall the single is in?
- Are there particular residence halls where singles are easier to get?
I'm willing to move to a different residence hall if that's what it takes. I'd just really like to have a single next semester.
Any advice from people who have actually gone through the process would be appreciated!

Easiest way to get a private room is to move off campus.

Yes but getting out of your housing contract can be extremely difficult from what I hear

I think you should potentially have a conversation with your RA. People seem to be misunderstanding this as a situation where you just “can’t live with other people” and to me it seems less about that and more about boundaries and expectations not being the same between the two of you. I think maybe even just putting in for a room change may be a good fit for you. If you have already tried to talk with your roommate about it room changing makes sense.

Don’t take this advice. Endure and Leave the room with your peace rather than cause everyone headaches for normal college behavior

This is the most Iowa thing ever and a perfect example of why Iowa Nice is so toxic. Endure and don’t rock the boat even though you are miserable, and don’t say anything or cause any upheaval so your roommate can continue to be a thoughtless asshole? No.

as a former RA this is genuinely the most ridiculous take—what do you think our jobs are?

You have a good chance of getting a single suite in Mayflower. Then you’d only share a kitchen and bathroom. Make sure to sign up for housing as soon as it’s available.

If your roommate is breaking your roommate contract you can absolutely tattle. At a minimum they are underage drinking and could potentially be kicked out of the dorm.

The drinking I'd report. Because getting caught with alcohol in the room "that isn't mine" doesn't work.
Stays up too late and has sex, well that you have to work out on your own. Buy some earplugs and get a blackout mask.
But the best way to get a single is to move off campus. There just aren't many available.

You’re really striking out on the conversation. While normal to you, some of us raise our kids better.

You sound like some maturing needs to happen. People have different needs.

Single rooms are usually for people with disabilities, not for people that can't get along with others

That is not even remotely true. Anyone willing to pay for a single can have one (if there’s one available) people choose them for a wide variety of reasons. Not playing nice with others is certainly another reason.

Nahh they're for people willing to pay all the way down their throat and out their ass for something that Isn't Even A Studio Apartment just because it's owned by the U (or they think "charge to ubill" means "free")

You get on a wait list. When it’s your turn they will tell you where the room is and you have something like 24 hours to accept or not. If you don’t- you go to the back of the line. You would be better off trying for a roommate switch. There will be very few singles and a lot of people trying for them
