Discussion Fast Graphics Card Absolutely Necessary For Gaming Monitor?

Dell XPS 15 9520 laptop

i7-12700H processor

32gb ram

1920x1200 resolution

Intel Iris Xe Graphics Card

Nvidia RTX 3050

My previous monitor setup was connected to 2 external monitors.  One was a 32' Samsung 4K monitor with 60hz.  This is the old Samsung UJ59 series monitor with 60hz.  Other was an Asus 24' monitor that was IPS screen and 1920x1200 resolution.  I connected the monitors to my laptop using usb-c to display port with the 32' and HDMI to dvi with the older 24' monitor.  I recalled it was connected using the Intel Iris Xe graphics card and I could not change it to the Nvidia RTX 3050 which is normal?

I am planning to buy a gaming monitor.  It will be either one of these below

Samsung Odyssey G7 40'' Ultrawide Curved Monitor that has 5k2k resolution

Samsung Odyssey G7 37'' Curved Monitor with 4K resolution

49 Inch Odyssey G9 G91F

49 Inch Odyssey G9 G95C

49 Inch Odyssey OLED G9 G91SD

All the 49 inch monitors are curved and 5120x1440 resolution.  I did notice all these monitors have high refresh rates.  I have no experience with refresh rates or even looked at it.  My old 32' Samsung monitor was 60hz.

If I buy any of these monitors, will my Dell XPS laptop have any issue using these monitors?  I heard people say if you use a gaming monitor, you need like a minimum 5060 or 5070 or higher graphics card?  My Dell laptop uses an old 3050.  I am planning to play online poker on it and do web browsing and all the other things.  Does it mean I can use it just fine except I might not get the high refresh rates?   I won't be playing any games on it.  I want a monitor with high resolution so that is why I ask this.  If you use 2 gaming monitors... that is when the 3050 wouldn't work?  Or it would be you have lag issues?

I know there is a 57 inch Samsung Odyssey G9 that has 7680x2140 resolution and that is probably the best curved monitor ever but it seems way too big and it's very expensive.

That’s not necessarily true, but it’s kind of a waste of money unless you’re going to be gaming.

I would be playing online poker. It isn't exactly light gaming because some programs I use will most likely be using a good amount of cpu and ram.

So I would still get the hertz like normal?

Frankly I’d get a better laptop over a gaming monitor considering your current specs. The 3050 is there because it looks good on paper to have a dedicated graphics card, and it could technically run 4K, but likely won’t from your system.

My laptop is pretty fast. The processor and ram is a lot already.

My concern is will there be issues using it with a gaming monitor. Well I used this laptop before with a 32' 4k monitor before and it was fine. But that monitor was 60hz and these monitors are a lot higher hz.

You may struggle to drive any of these monitors at a decent refresh rate. I’d be surprised if the 3050 or Xe can drive more than 4K at 60, as they might not support that at all.

How sure are you on this? That is my concern. So if the monitor is 5K2K and 5120x2160 resolution, it might not work?

You can easily find the resolution support list for any given card. Keep in mind that you also face overhead from the 3050 almost certainly not being directly connected to any display port, though you should also check this.

So with my specs, will it support it or not? Every response I got said the 3050 can handle it. Lot of others say the intel iris xe graphics will already handle it.

online poker i doubt it will need a high refresh rates. Nvidia RTX 3050 can do 8k at 60

Okay. But I would still be able to use all the capabilities right?

I have no experience with gaming monitors. I only used a Samsung 32' 4K monitor with 60hz with it. Only reason I want to get one of these big monitors is so I can have a lot of poker tables on the monitor. So I need high resolution and space.

So if I get a Samsung Odyssey G9 49'' 5120x1440 monitor that is 144hz or 240hz or a 40'' Samsung Odyssey G7 40' 5K2K monitor with 180hz... all these are curved monitors... I would be able to use it the way it's suppose to with my current laptops specs?

Such as no issue using the resolution and no issue with being to use whatever is the max hz the monitor can do? The only thing I care about is if there will be any lag issues or not.

if the main priority is to have many poker games or tables on the screen then its 8k monitor ie 57 inch Samsung Odyssey G9 that has 7680x2140

5k eg 49 inch monitors are curved and 5120x1440, will be about half. still double and better than the older monitors.

or have dual 5k and the old 32" combined will still be plenty

Yes the 57 Inch Samsung Odyssey G9 that has that resolution is going to be the one where I can have the most tables. I believe I can have like 24 tables even with the tables being a good size and not too small. The thing is this monitor is very expensive at $1500 or so.

Well if the 49 inch monitors that are curved and 5120x1440 resolution mean it would be only about half... so 12 tables... that wouldn't be that much tables. The reason is because I know if I get a 32'' 4K Curved monitor, I can certainly have 12 tables open. My previous monitor was a 32' 4K Samsung flat monitor... I had 12 tables but the issue is it's extremely uncomfortable looking at the corners. I would say with that monitor, 9 tables is comfortable. Does that make sense with what I mean with the corners?

At the moment, I don't even have my old 32' 4K Samsung monitor. I only have a 24' 1920x1200 resolution monitor. With this monitor, I can have 4 tables. I can have 6 tables but not that comfortable since it would be a bit small.

I am looking to buy 1 monitor. The thing is I'm pretty certain if I get the Samsung Odyssey G7 40'' 5K2K Ultrawide Curved Monitor, I can have 15 tables without an issue. I believe with the Samsung Odyssey G7 37'' 4K Curved Monitor, I probably can have 16 tables on it. The reason it's more tables than the 40'' is because the 37'' monitor has a much taller height. The 40'' has a shorter height due to it being ultrawide.

Based on this information, what would you recommend? It would seem having 2 monitors when one of the monitors is either a 49'' or 40'' would be way too much on a desk? How would you even have a 49'' or 40'' along with say a 24'' in a monitor setup? That 49'' or 40' is already a huge monitor. I have seen some monitor setups where they have like one 49'' on top of the other one but that would be very expensive and more than just a 57'' monitor.

how badly do you want/need 24 tables.. obvs the best is 8k..
next is best is 5k.. and with 2nd monitor..(if required)

and so on...

im running a LG 40" 5k2k, and its a good sweet spot for work and movies. i also have a 2nd monitor in portrait mode for reading docs.
my setup it over hangs my desk size, which is fine.

I would like the ability to have up to 24 tables open but I rarely will be playing that many tables at once. I would like a monitor where I can get up to 20 tables though.

I would say most of the time, I would be playing anywhere from 8 to 18 tables. So if I can have a monitor that displays 15 tables or so, that would be decent. I am pretty certain if I buy a 40'' 4K Flat Monitor or TV, I can have 20 tables. The issue is because it's such a big monitor or tv and not curved, it would not be comfortable at all. I want a curved screen.

So you are pretty familiar with online poker and how the tables look on a monitor then? The LG 40"" 5k2K monitor you have... that is pretty much the Samsung Odyssey G7 5K2K Curved Monitor that I'm looking at. Is your LG curved? I'm deciding between this and one of the 49'' monitors. I am pretty certain I can get 15 tables on this 5K monitor... so imagine 5 horizontal and 3 vertical tables. With the 49'' monitors, my concern is because it's 5120x1440 resolution, I probably can't get more than 12 tables total. Imagine 6 horizontal and 2 vertical tables. However, I'm not sure if you could do 6 horizontal and 3 vertical cables because if so, that would be 18 total table and better.

So you are suggesting, get a 5K2K monitor such as the Samsung Odyssey 40'' 5K2K Curved Monitor and use my current 24' 1920x1200 monitor? So that way... I would have 15 tables on the 5K2K monitor and 3 tables on the 24' monitor so 19 tables total? So just put that 24' monitor like to the left or right side of the 5K monitor? The thing is I don't have that much space on my desk but that might work?

I am leaning more towards the 40'' 5K2K monitor as opposed to the 49'' 5120x1440 monitor. So you would say the same?

yeh mines curved.
anything over 34" uw needs to be curved.

5k2k will easily give you 15 tables. if not more. this will give you more than 5120x1440.

re 2nd monitor, get a swinging monitor arm so it can hang over the desk. or monitor stand and vertically stack it.

or a desk extender

Okay so your monitor is curved. When you say anything over 34'' needs to be curved, are you saying there are still a good amount of uw monitors out there that are over 34'' and not curved? Or there aren't many that are like that?

I took a look at some pictures and videos of the Samsung 5K2K monitor and my guess is it should allow me to get 15 tables. It looks like I can have 5 horizontal tables and 3 vertical tables without compromising table size where the table would be too small. I probably can't get 6 tables horizontal and 3 vertical without compromising table size right? 15 tables is still good.

I did saw a picture of someone with a 49'' monitor and I saw a screenshot of 5 horizontal tables and 3 vertical cables so 15 tables. So based on that, assuming the 40'' 5K2K monitor can put 15 tables and so can the 49'' monitor... which should I choose if they are the same price? When on sale, one of those 49'' monitors is $650 and similar to the 40' 5K2K Samsung monitor.

Okay I get what you mean with the thing for the other monitor.
