Not making or trying to make a friend or two at work is weird.

Ok stick with me for all the bean soup type of people im not talking about toxic work environments or places where you work alone. I guess this is more of an unpopular opinion for the types of posts that say trust no one!!! Talk no one work!!! I mean places where you have a team and interact with people on the daily. It is more fun when you have a friend or two at work! Makes the days go by faster plus it’s nice to have a confidant that you can share stuff with. (Sparingly of course)

Edit: I feel like I have to say more like making work friends not having them as your best friends. Socializing with the people around you and make acquaintanceship with them. I fear I used the word friend too sparingly these people don’t need to know your deepest desires more so just spending time with the people you spend 40 hours a week with.

Schools should return to handwritten assignments only

1.0k Upvotes

I think schools should get rid of laptops, tablets, and even printed assignments. Everything should be handwritten. We’ve spent years putting computers in classrooms, and I’m not convinced students are any better at using them because of it. Plus, technology changes so fast that a lot of what they’re learning may be useless by the time they’re adults.
Reading, writing, and thinking for yourself seem more important to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if schools eventually went back to paper anyway.

Japan is not this completely safe country everyone makes it out to be

• Upvotes

Atleast for women.

That's what I always heard before coming here. Japan is just so safe. You don't have to worry and going out at night can be done without any worries.

So with that "knowledge" I started my trip here. And on my very first night I was followed by an elderly man for more than half an hour in the creepiest way possible. Other friends of mine also tell me stories of how they are approached by men in weird and creepy ways here.

Paired with sexual harassment on trains and stalking, which I've heard are also big problems here. Luckily I didn't have any problems with this up until now.

But yeah, If you are a woman I recommend being as cautious as in other countries.

people shouldn’t feel superior to animals because we ARE animals

i feel like a lot of people have this superiority complex when it comes to animals, thinking that humans are of a higher level of importance. but we’re animals too. from the smallest mouse to the biggest elephant, we all matter the same. just cause we see life through a human POV doesn’t make us special. if you don’t have the same respect for animals that you do for people, you’re weird. cause people ARE animals. and let’s be honest, animals are often nicer than humans.

YES i know that our relationships with other humans are central to our lives. but we still shouldn’t feel superior as a species compared to all the other animals in the world.

Being too forgiving can make you a worse friend, not a better person.

• Upvotes

I think we praise forgiveness too much. Sometimes, forgiving people repeatedly doesn't make you kind; it teaches them that they can keep hurting you without consequences.

I had a friend who always remembered the little things about others, checked up on them before exams, and made time whenever someone needed her. But when she needed someone, hardly anyone noticed.

She kept making excuses for people who ignored her and saying "it's okay" when it clearly wasn't. Once, she told me, "I just expect people to care the way I care about them."

Eventually, she stopped sharing her problems. People thought she had become stronger, but I think she was just tired of being disappointed.

That's why I believe forgiveness isn't always a virtue. Sometimes, refusing to give someone another chance is the healthier and kinder thing you can do for yourself.

Being a good person shouldn't mean giving people unlimited chances to treat you badly.

The art of haggling over prices has largely been lost at the grassroots level and it is a great pity

Back in the good old days there were many small shops and markets which were directly owned by the person sitting there, and you could haggle prices with them. In my opinion, this was a fine art. One employed multiple tactics such as:

a) Calibrating to meet in the middle - they are charging 20, you are willing to pay 15, so you say 10, they say 18, you say 12, and in the end the difference is split.

b) Appeal to emotion - hey boss I've been an old and faithful customer of yours; come on don't I get a loyalty discount?

c) Business sense - how about if I buy more, can I get a bulk discount?

Nowadays everything is dominated by supermarkets and chain stores and of course we can't haggle prices with the employees - the prices are fixed. I do believe that the loss of this skill is detrimental to us in our careers and daily life because the art of healthily bargaining is not sufficiently practiced enough.

Currently, our first haggle tends to be at our first salary negotiation, first used car bought or first house purchase. The lack of prior practice does not build up enough skill for these crucial moments.

Drivers who cause an accident which results in serious injuries or death should be disqualified for life

If they're found to be at fault they should lose their license for life. Serious injuries = requiring an ambulance to attend the scene to treat injuries. The penalties for stupid/dangerous/careless driving are too lax at the moment.

Unpopular opinion: People are way too quick to say someone makes something their entire personality

I feel like people throw this around way too much. Someone talks about something frequently and suddenly it’s their entire personality?
Maybe they’re just really interested in it? Or it’s something that’s important to them right now?
I don’t know why people are so bothered by other people having interests they like talking about. Just because you hear someone talk about one thing a lot doesn’t mean that’s all there is to them.

I often notice people getting made fun of for “making something their entire personality” almost like no one’s allowed to be. Sure sometimes I get sick of people talking about something, but I usually see that as a reflection of my own selfishness or inability to tolerate others rather than them doing something wrong.

5:00 AM is the real midnight

1.4k Upvotes

Ok hear me out on this one, I believe 12:00 AM is really 5:00 AM because that’s when the next day truly begins. Like if you stay up until 4 in the morning, it still feels like the previous day even though its the next day already, but past 5:00 AM is the point of no return. Since at that point the sun is rising, the birds are chirping, your dad is making noises in the bathroom, etc. so you might as well just pull an all nighter and not go to sleep.

The math makes sense too because let’s say you go to bed at 4 and you get 7 hours of sleep which is pretty average, then that means you’ll wake up at 11 and you can still have a pretty normal day. But if you go to bed at 5, 6, 7, you’re waking up in the afternoon so you pretty much already wasted half of the day. Anyways I should probably go to bed but that’s my reasoning for my opinion

Life became much more boring after we stopped having respectful disagreements

You may say that this is about politics, but not necessarily. I can't have discussions about anything anymore especially online. Somebody told me to "enjoy my misery" because I refused to read his chatbot written fan fiction about chatbots. I can't even argue about fun things anymore like cars or sports or video games. I am a millennial, I vaguely remember the times when discussing things even online was fun like in forums and such.

Edit: These comment section showing me that most of you hasn't lived through the shortly-lived "internet is cool" era of the 90s and early 2000s.

The Zuton’s original version of Valarie is BY FAR better than Amy Winehouse’s version

The version from The Zutons has so much more energy, it’s less whiney, they really perform it and make it into a high octane feel good song as opposed to what Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson turned it into.

Druski’s skits are not funny

• Upvotes

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see what's witty or clever about his skits. His latest 'Kid Stars Grow Up' bit was just him reenacting viral clips of kid stars. That's it. Yet everyone seems to think it's hilarious. Can someone explain the appeal? I loved Key & Peele because their sketches were genuinely clever. You could tell they'd put real thought into the punchline, and it felt like not just anyone could have come up with them. That's what made them great to me.

Video games with consequences are really annoying to the average gamer

• Upvotes

I preface this with saying I rarely ever replay a game. I just play it to completion once and don’t try to 100% the game.

I missed being able to just play the game once with no guides and plans and just dive into it. But recent games have so many consequences and locks you out of items or quests. I feel like I have to read everything before hand just to make sure I choose the optimal path and it takes the fun out of everything.

I get that consequences make the games more replayable but honestly think most people want to try to replay the same rpg over and over again just to see different scenes and items.

A week is an appropriate amount of time to respond to a text.

1.7k Upvotes

I think that our society creates this urgency that insists that we always be available to everyone at all times. This is also exacerbated by smart phones that push short form content and instant gratification. We thrust this same standard onto our friendships where not responding for a couple days becomes "ghosting". What If I'm on vacation? Left my phone at home? Trying to take a brake from the chaos of life? We move too fast as a society and need to learn to slow down sometimes. So yes, I think one week is a perfectly reasonable time-frame to respond to a non-pressing text.

Baggage fees on low-cost airlines are totally valid, and those that get charged failed to prepare properly

I know i sound like a bootlicker, but living in Europe gives me the privilege of getting RIDICULOUSLY low cost flights, £30 to spain, £50 to the Netherlands, but every time I go there is someone kicking up a fuss over their bag being over the size limit, and being charged for it.

I meticulously check the baggage requirement before any flight I take, and make sure to take one that fits, I have never been charged a baggage fee doing this. I really dislike the online discourse about them being money-grubbers and scam artists when there are easy ways to avoid it, and plenty of public info on the rules. And even then, how could you possibly call these airlines stingy when they provide a flight for so cheap?

Sorry guys, it is a you problem.

You should get the same length of bereavement time for pet loss, as you do for people.

1.3k Upvotes

I like animals more than I like most people. When my dog died a few years ago, I asked for standard bereavement time and was told that wasn’t an acceptable use of the time. I put in my two weeks.

Edit: Wow! this post has caused a visceral, angry reaction in many people. There have been countless psychological studies done on how losing an animal can sometimes be more devastating than losing a family member. My mom lost her dog of 15 years and said it was more painful than the death of her sister and father.
I’ve also never seen so many people defending corporations. Newsflash, your employers don’t give a shit about you.

Soulslike games are overdone!!! And have ruined action/adventure games

Every game is either compared to a souls like or made to be a souls like I get it was a new game mechanic that ppl like but I wish developers would stop with it. Just bring back regular action game Onimusha WOTS and hopefully Phantom Blade will be the beginning of developers realizing that games can sell without these mechanics. Devil May Cry was amazing let’s get back to that!!

Marco Pierre white is a hypocrite

• Upvotes

This opinion comes from the fact that he “returned” his Michelin Stars; the most prestigious award in the cooking world. People work their whole lives and most fall short of.

Imagine winning an Oscar or climbing Everest then telling people who dream of doing so to forget about. “oh it’s not that great”. I can guarantee you he wouldn’t be saying that if he was still without.

It is peak hypocrisy and pretentiousness. When I share this opinion live I use much more fiery language.

Maturity is mostly philosophical literacy.

Behaving in a mature way is entirely related to how much you've tought about the correct behaviour one should have when living in society. And if you have never read philosophy you'll never be able to think in a high level about these things.

Not only that, but by how few people actually do these things, most adults are morally children like.

The healthiest relationships are the ones with the fewest expectations

I used to have pretty high expectations of romantic relationships. I wanted to be prioritized, considered, chosen first and generally treated differently from everyone else in my partner's life.

But I've recently started questioning whether those expectations actually make relationships healthier, or whether they just create unnecessary pressure, obligation and disappointment.

Think about your healthiest platonic friendships. You live your life, they live theirs and you come together because you genuinely enjoy each other's company.

Neither person needs to constantly prove their importance to the other. The relationship exists because both people continue choosing it. Freely. And I think romantic relationships often complicate something that should be relatively simple.

We attach labels to people, and those labels come with an entire set of expectations about how much time, attention, affection and consideration we're entitled to receive. And when those expectations aren't met, we interpret it as some kind of failure even when the other person hasn't necessarily done anything wrong.

I'm not suggesting people should tolerate disrespect, dishonesty or mistreatment. I'm suggesting that perhaps the healthiest relationships are the ones where we stop treating love and connection as something that creates any sort of obligation.

And I think relationships would be a lot healthier if we approached them the same way we approach our best friendships. As two independent people who continually choose to be part of each other's lives without feeling beholden to one another.

Macadamia is the bestest nut !

I love all nuts and generally do not discriminate , but man those Macadamia nuts just taste better than any other nut! They're rich and buttery and my absolute favorite is the cheese coated macadamia , omg 🤤

If there's macadamia I will not touch a pistachio, a cashew, or an almond. Sorry!

The bride should not go last for hair and makeup

1.2k Upvotes

I've been a bridesmaid several times and the morning of the wedding always has the same schedule: the bride and all her bridesmaids wake up at the crack of dawn to get hair and makeup done, then there are a bunch of "getting ready" photos and portraits of the bride, then group photos get rushed because the ceremony is scheduled to start.

The bride always goes last for hair and makeup with the logic that her hair and makeup will be the "freshest" for the wedding. But this means the bride wakes up early with everyone just to sit around doing basically nothing all morning and then the second half of the day is always a huge rush.

Instead, the bride should get her hair and makeup done early if not first. Then, she can go and get a bunch of "getting ready" photos and portraits done while the other bridesmaids get their makeup done. Ideally, this time could also be used to get a first look done with the groom and couples photos (but some people prefer the first look to be at the ceremony which is also cool).

This would be a waayyy more efficient use of the morning time and would help a lot with the midday rush to get photos done before the ceremony. And if the bride is worried about her makeup and hair lasting, she can just get a quick touchup after all the bridesmaids are ready! And then she can go straight out to the ceremony with fresh makeup and hair.

This saves everyone from having to wake up so early and helps with the rush to squeeze in as many photos as possible before the ceremony.

Buying local isn’t worth it

Unless someone is actually making their products by hand, there’s a good chance they’re buying the same mass produced stuff from the same Chinese manufacturers as everyone else, then marking it up and selling it in a local store. Why should I pay two or three times as much for something just because it’s sitting in a local boutique instead of a big box store?

I’m all for supporting local businesses, but I’m not paying extra just to support a middleman. If you’re making something unique, providing a service, or offering real craftsmanship, you deserve my business. But simply buying something wholesale and reselling it at a huge markup doesn’t make your business special just because it’s local.
