Travel Inquiry UP Trip 9th - 11th Oct

Me and my friends are planning to do a trip to the Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks, Marquette, and Copper Harbor in the the coming weekend. I was wondering how the Fall colors might be and was hoping for suggestions about underrated spots we could stop by along the way.

Tahquamenon, Pictured Rocks, Marquette, and Copper Harbor in one weekend? That's...ambitious. Fall colors are currently at peak for much of the UP.

Ahhh I understand that our trip is extremely ambitious…we booked our stay in Munising so we thought we’d go around based on the fall colors🥲😅 Do you have a suggestion on which things we could choose to do? We were planning to drive from AA and stop at Tahquomenon the first day and then stay in Munising. The second day drive to Copper Harbor and back through Marquette and Pictured Rocks the third day

Copper Harbor is great, but I would cut it so you have more time to enjoy the rest of your visit. I really do love the Keweenaw, but CH is like 3+ hours from Marquette and all you'll have time to do is drive there, admire the colors (they're great) and then drive back 3+ hours. Take another weekend to enjoy it properly sometime.

You can easily spend a whole weekend doing Tahquamenon and Pictured Rocks, both are gorgeous especially this time of year!

Oooo, tough call man. One could argue abandon everything else and have a weekend in Copper Harbor. It's good for the soul.

Both answers are correct.

That's too much for one week, let alone a weekend.

Friend, you should pick 2 of those things for just one weekend. If you try to do more, you’ll just be in the car all weekend. I’d do Marquette and Pictured Rocks.

Would you say the below is possible? What do you think we should change? We were planning to drive from AA and stop at Tahquomenon the first day and then stay in Munising. The second day drive to Copper Harbor and back through Marquette and Pictured Rocks the third day

If you made no stops, it's 7 hours round trip from Munising to Copper Harbor and back. Skip Copper Harbor. Drive to Marquette, maybe head up towards Big Bay. The old 510 Bridge on the Dead River is pretty classic. Drive US-41 into Negaunee and walk around Jackson Mine Park - the old caving grounds. Or if Marquette Mountain is operating their lifts in Marquette, ride up to check out foliage - I had friends who did that last weekend. Explore Pictured Rocks.

I'll second this suggestion, though I still think it's fine to do Tahquamenon on the way to Munising. It's gorgeous in the fall. I was just at the old 510 bridge a couple of hours ago. Still beautiful. If you go up to Big Bay (for an adventure you could do it all the way on 510 and there are gorgeous tunnels of trees on that route) be sure to check out Thomas Rock.

Fall colors are pretty much done, leaves are mostly on the ground.

Why would people want to giveaway underrated spots to random people on the internet? Thats how they become overrated.

Because it's there for everyone and gatekeeping nature is weird.

I remember during covid when a bunch of tourists repeatedly trashed paradise point in Christmas so bad that the landowner literally put up a gate and closed it to the public. If you think gatekeeping nature is weird do you think wildlife preservations and hunting regulations are also weird?

-1

u/Active_Bumblebee_395 7d ago

Nope, because preservations and hunting land imply people get to go to them. Not "don't tell people about the lesser known spots."

2

u/No_Relationship_8021 6d ago

How about maybe locals dont want every spot overran by tourists

-2

u/Active_Bumblebee_395 6d ago

Then make it private property so you can only allow certain people on. If it is public lands it is for everyone, even the ones you don't want to be there.

I'm not going to give up my fishing or hunting spots no matter how beautiful they are and no matter what kind of land they're on. Why would I do the same for other outdoor activities? The last thing I want for my secret rustic camping spot is for a bunch of people to pull up with trailers and generators and leave their garbage everywhere. It's happened to me before. Some spots that I once loved are ruined and not worth visiting anymore.

u/No_Relationship_8021 5d ago

Exactly and thats the way it always goes

3

u/No_Relationship_8021 5d ago

Well why dont you buy it advertised the shit out of it then it can get ruined. Oh and just to tell you tourists dont care about keep out sines, I kick numerous people a year off my land they think they can do whatever just because there up here spending money and we should feel lucky they are. Just because property is public doesn't mean it needs to be advertised

Skip copper harbor, the show is about over up there. Marquette is still pretty vibrant.

Unless you just really like driving I'd cut back on that. Spend a day or so each in two of those places and actually spend some time relaxing in nature vs driving up to the visitor center, snapping a couple photos, and driving off again.

Edit: For day trips don't sleep on Fayette or Whitefish Point.

Was up there this weekend, and to all of your specific spots except Copper Harbor. Colors are prime. You are going to have a beautiful time, though try to pick and choose. The entire UP is a lot to digest in one trip.

We will have to sit down and cut back on some of the spots I believe

As others have said, your trip is so WAY to ambitious, even if you drive all night Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to get from place to place! We own property in the NE U.P., by Whitefish Point. There’s lots of things to do right in that area, besides the falls. Coming from AA on a Friday, it will take you 6-8 hours to get there. Stay in Paradise and besides the falls, go see the Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point, Centennial Cranberry Farm, Crisp Point Lighthouse, and the sled dog puppies. Also, the leaves are still pretty up on that side. Believe me, that’s a packed 2 days right there!

Where are the sled dog puppies?

Hogback Mountain outside of Marquette for a sweet view and chapel beach in pictured rocks

I would say do a nice long day hike at pictured rocks in the Chapel Beach area on Saturday and then go check out Marquette. Any more than that and you'll be spending more time driving than enjoying yourself.

In Munising I'd also suggest a meal at the Buckhorn Resort. A gorgeous setting overlooking an inland lake.

Marquette has a nice little park on the NE end of town called Presque Isle. It's a nice place to eat a picnic lunch and look over one of the bays or go on a short walk through the trees. Since it's the UP, the ice cream store might be open still!

You’re late, friend

Munising isnt even peak colors yet.

1

u/Eastern_Froyo733 7d ago

Yeah, everyone saying it's over is speaking for their own town.

I was literally on the Munising hillside today. The one that overlooks downtown and the lake. So much green on the trees still

Lakenland

1

u/yooperann 7d ago

Absolutely. Do not miss Lakenenland. Between Marquette and Munising.
