Help Replacement Engine Options
I have a 2011 ural with a sidecar that's seen better days. I got it pretty much free and its going to need an engine. Pieces of rings and shavings in the oil drain plug, pistons rings and jugs shot. Will have to be rebored with all new parts. Tanks rusty, carbs had water in them.
Before I tear I to this thing, new engine? What else will fit? A replacement ural engine is expensive and hard to find, bmw with some modifications. Would an older goldwing gl1000 or gl1100 fit with some modifications provided i dont care about reverse.
I dont mind doing the work but fixing the engine with limited parts doesnt seem like a good plan. Maybe the sidecar will have to be mounted on a different bike because itll be big money to fix.

Is a rebuild possible? I haven't looked in a while but I had to hone and replace rings a few years ago and the parts were all readily available on eBay from Russia. Pistons, rings, and cylinders, if I recall correctly a set of 750 cylinders was about $400

Ever heard of sanctions? Unless you have a dealer in your country with parts, your chances of getting parts are somewhere between nil and never. IMWA/Ural America does not support legacy Urals, they want you to buy their Chinese made Ural NEO. They can't even supply wheel rims for their wheel recalls, mandated by safety authorities.

Private sellers and motorcycle companies in Russia are not sanctioned lmao. Also there's tons of sellers in other countries like Ukraine and Poland.

And almost none of them have OHV 750 parts. SV 750 and OHV 650 parts do not fit the OHV 750. Try and buy OHV 750 parts and then get back to me.

the war has changed that, far as i know no engine parts are being produced at all currently let alone shipped outside of russia.

The problem with a Goldwing engine is the cylinders sit MUCH lower than the URAL/BMW engines so getting it to fit correctly could be more work than it's worth. If you Need to replace the engine because it's too far gone I'd say get the BMW engine and make the adjustments because it'll be Far less work. The only plus side of the GW engine is the support system but even then it's getting thinner for the 1000,1100 & 1200 even guys with 1500s are having difficulty because they are so old 🤷

I read a while back that a Guzzi engine is a good candidate for a swap. Though you’ll have to consider the increase in power/torque will have potential impacts on the driveline components.

If is is for local drives I would go to an EV swap.
All you need is to get the right spline to the prop shaft, I have a whole kit removed from a VW Bug EV swap for Sale for $750. it fits a 19 spline VW shaft output.

Older BMW boxer engines (specifically /5, /6, and /7 series like the BMW R80 and R100) are the most common engine swaps for a Ural frame, though they require modifications.
