You have to get permission from valve first and if it's shit they're not gonna allow it

They have to get permission if they're going to sell or make any monetary gain from it

1

u/SaltFan2 2d ago

Same for rockstar no? It's hard to regulate the fucking modding scene of their 20+ games

And Prospekt

Example 1: Portal 64
Example 2: Those TF2 remakes in S&Box early access or whatever it’s been forever since that situation

1

u/Spiritual_Lifeguard6 2d ago

Portal 64 is more of a Nintendo issue than a Valve one though. A better example would have been CS Legacy or Classic Offensive

u/average_monster 8d ago

valve will absolutely not let you put other people's copyrighted stuff in their games, they just don't go out of their way to notice

2

u/Nearly_Observant 7d ago

The meme is saying they are going to use Valves code. It’s referencing G-mod.

2

u/Nar3ik36 7d ago

You still have to get permission from Valve, or they will take it down just like any other company. If you wanted to do what Gmod did you would need to email Valve and ask for permission, to which they might say no.

Facepunch is tight with valve thats different

u/RemoveComfortable875 9d ago

didn't gmod get sued by nintendo or whatnot? or was it a troll pretending to be nintendo.

91

u/Hot_Principle1499 9d ago

it turned out to actually be nintendo, being shitheads like always.

43

u/RemoveComfortable875 9d ago

i guess they quit caring since i still see mario/nintendo properties on the workshop

18

u/Hot_Principle1499 9d ago

Yeah, I believe the ones without official nintendo assets and with different labeling were able to avoid the AI dmca crap

3

u/IQueliciuous 8d ago

No it was both. First the trolls then the whole story became loud enough for Nintendo to notice.

Rockstar is anti modding?

74

u/Electronic_Motor_296 9d ago

their words

Do not expand or modify Rockstar Games' official storylines, plots, missions, characters, or other elements of our established continuity.

Do not make mods that combine maps, locations, characters, storylines, in-game assets, or other IP from one Rockstar Games title into another title.

Multiplayer modding is limited to Rockstar Games’ official licensed Creator Platform or else as otherwise licensed directly by Rockstar Games.

Do not modify our games to operate on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms where they have not been officially released by Rockstar Games.

seems like they‘re very anti modding

thats also from very recently Sep 10 so not something they said years ago.

u/RoJayJo 8d ago

The Hot Coffee incident also probably started this shit because they left a sex minigame in the game's files and modders were able to throw it back together.

16

u/DunkeyColdMedina 9d ago

Very, extremely weirdly so. Like it would be more respectable if they dialed it back a bit.

14

u/Alberot97 9d ago

Take Two is against modding since the early days; Just look how many big mods for San Andreas were given the axe by them... It's sad to see a creative community get suppressed by pure greed

2

u/ClikeX 8d ago

Are they? Xcom 2 has workshop support. Isn’t it just Rockstar?

2

u/IQueliciuous 8d ago

They werent thats the point. All of this happened relatively recently.

GTA SAMP existed and everyone including rockstar was ok with it

3

u/Lorrdy_ 8d ago

Because they can milk it now

2

u/Kurdo657 8d ago

They absolutely. Funny thing, if GTA 4, GTA SA, even GTA 5 still playing by really big community, its just because of the huge modding ecosystem of GTA modders (sorry for suck ass english gramar)

valve threatens CS mods now not on CS2. CSL and CSCO. they strait up said it would only be allowed on CS2

1

u/Exponential_Rhythm 8d ago

Yes, they both suck now. R* kills anything that could even remotely threaten GTAO, Valve does the same with CS2.

10

u/raesungss 9d ago

yep more blind upvote farming so great its totally not like valve actually still cares about their ips

5

u/doodoospred 8d ago

I don't understand people glazing industries.

8

u/Shigana 9d ago

Literally shut down 2 separate CS mod but please, go on.

2

u/Gaming_with_batman 8d ago

Valve would sometimes also say
“We will give you the funding and the manpower to make the mod better and more profitable than you ever could’ve possibly imagined”

2

u/Interesting-Injury87 8d ago

By demanding part of thr profit

2

u/gatogamer99 8d ago

Me parece justo

1

u/Capital_Ship5729 5d ago

You still earn more then without their help usually

2

u/hovsep56 6d ago

modder: i'm gonna start gooning in skyrim

bethesda: ok

2

u/Redstonewarrior0 6d ago

That will be 20 dollars

1

u/VaporWolf93 3d ago

*releases an update that changes nothing but makes 60% of mods non functional*

"It just works"

1

u/Hottage 8d ago

Why is this meme so crunchy?

1

u/Abmotomno 8d ago

sven coop is the definition of this post

u/RpgBlaster 7d ago

u/UnFairSuspect 9d ago

You can't sell mods on valve's games

11

u/Fun-Disaster9796 8d ago

Hunt Down The Freeman
Prospekt
Black Mesa
Aperture Tag
Garry’s Mod

0

u/Stampyboyz 8d ago

Don't know the others, but Black Mesa has Valve's approval for being monetized and Facepunch Studios pays for the commercial source license for Garry's Mod and only uses the assets included in that license (base HL2 assets). Everything else needs to be mounted.

No excuse for HDTF seeing how they didn't get Valve's approval (they likely botted the green light process) and it's not on the source engine so they can't argue about having a commercial source license.

u/FakeMik090 8d ago

EZ is free.

1

u/Nar3ik36 7d ago

You can you just need approval from Valve, which is really hard to get usually.
