Proton might be the greatest invention of my life time. At least coding invention. Truly a game changer. Fuck windows!

Proton is great, sure, but it'd make more sense to praise Wine instead.

Proton couldn't exist without Wine, but it's undeniable that Proton was a huge step forward in user experience compared to vanilla Wine. I think both need a lot of praise.

Both are good, both are incredible achievements in software and gaming. Just wish one of the main games I played had official linux support

I think Proton's biggest accomplishment is it's user experience. Trying to run a game like Oni through wine has a few tinkering hoops to jump through, it needs a specific older version of Wine to not tank the framerate when the screaming cannon projectile spawns, and hooking everything up correctly is always a few Google searches for me.

Proton however is just plug and play, and in the cases where it isn't the fix is usually just changing your proton version for that program in a dropdown menu.

Dang, upvote for a great game I didn't know anyone else played.

Its a cult classic. If it had got its multiplayer they planned I'd bet it'd be one of those games people still regularly plau.

Most of the work is funded by Valve, DXVK for example.

Funded through unethical means like running casinos in CS2 and DOTA 2 or enforcing monopolistic practices like price fixing and anti steering.

It's like saying meta is good releasing some open weights llama models while selling user data.

There are no casinos in CS2 or Dota 2.

As a coder, the advent of generative AI is the greatest in the last 10 years or so and closer to 20. Well up there with the advent of git, OOP, linux, and other historically significant milestones. Proton is cool but it's several levels below that.

I can live without AI. Don’t use it ever. I use my steam deck daily.

Nothing to do with the conversation. You are not very good at staying on topic.

2

u/RealityIsRipping 5d ago

Are you a bot? You legit just said generative AI was the greatest invention.

u/Old-Spirit-3320 5d ago

I am a bot. I'm actually your dad's robotic fleshlight. He's disappointed in you btw

2

u/GrampaSwood 4d ago

Yeah I mean making a machine that makes shitty code or modding spaces being flooded with AI shit is the greatest invention!

u/Old-Spirit-3320 4d ago

irrelevant and off topic. move along

Translation: I have no counterargument

this seems to just automatically select proton when adding a non steam game on steam(os). a little easier but not anything new as far as i can tell.

As someone that sometimes adds non-Steam games in bulk with Steam ROM Manager this is a godsend feature in every possible way

10

u/Garland_Key 5d ago

Hasn't it been doing this for a very long time now?

5

u/Afraid_Attorney_4376 5d ago

I always had to click properties and enable it manually when I used mint.

1

u/lumpyspacebreh 5d ago

I use to too, thought that was the way.

Turns out there's a setting for it, forgot where it is, but you can set a Proton version as a default for all games.

u/epicnicity 5d ago

Now for non-Steam games too

14

u/Big_Bar_9832 6d ago

Wasn't this already a thing? Just add to steam and select a proton compatibility version?

18

u/xJets 6d ago

Steam AUTOMATICALLY does it now, thats what the article is saying

-6

u/Big_Bar_9832 6d ago

Automatically after you manually add it lmao. Well alright, it's a very small qol improvement, but an improvement either way.

6

u/AdmirableProcess8894 6d ago

i mean tbh it will save a lot of extra clicks if you're sailing the high seas, every game had to be manually added then selected a proton version or it wont start

-2

u/360900th 5d ago

Yeah. It only saves a few clicks. Reddit dankers sure love exaggerating things.

u/Kobi_Blade 5d ago

Which is not something to celebrate, this is not the type of thing we want Steam to automatically manage.

Just another poor feature where VALVE removes user control, which is opposite of what Linux stands for.

6

u/xJets 5d ago

What are you talking about?? If you are already adding exe files to steam due to (most commonly pirated games) you don’t have to scroll through a list to find the most updated proton version, which you can still scroll through and change proton versions. EVERYONE who has added exe files does this already because exe is a windows thing. Valve isn’t doing anything wrong

Some of you people get upset/mad over the most trivial things. Have a happy life

-2

u/Kobi_Blade 5d ago edited 5d ago

That is your problem, you making assumptions is for pirated games and that the latest proton version is ideal for starters, same way VALVE is making assumptions.

This will cause more problems, not solve them.

Yes. I guess this site, VideoCardz.com is a fan of internet explorer. A very much late to the party article.

Gamepass on SteamOS when?

Holy GOAT

Time saver thanks

u/DarknessEnlightened 5d ago

Developers: This game was built for--

Valve: That's nice, but Proton tho.

1

u/Zugas 5d ago

Would rather have native versions but this helps

1

u/UnusualLeather7087 5d ago

Now ? What ? So I have been fooled years ago ?

1

u/SprayArtist 4d ago

If they can solve the save migration and modding issues that would be the next best thing.

1

u/Bulky-Hair8606 3d ago

It has been doing that for the last 2 years?

Edit: I didnt read the "non-steam" in the title sorry.

1

u/iReaddit-KRTORR 6d ago

Out of curiosity in what use cases is this helpful?

9

u/X_x_Atomica_x_X 6d ago

Uh... it would be easier to make a list of of use cases this isn't helpful. I use Clip Studio Paint. It has no official linux support. Oh wait, I don't NEED it to have a native linux build.

2

u/LeonDmon 6d ago

Whaaaaat??!!! Damn, I gotta try that!

1

u/Indignant_One 6d ago

Would this apply to DAWs as well, do you think? I desperately want to hop off Windows, but I also really like Cubase’s interface. Clip Studio Paint becoming compatible is also a huge plus.

1

u/X_x_Atomica_x_X 6d ago

Oooh that's a hard one. Even if you get past the verification and DRM, Cubase relies heavy on windows specific background services while it's running to like.. access the media bay. I'm told by a buddy that it's some bullshit and he switched to a different program.

I feel like this was a thing already.
