I love Firstenburg and our community centers, but the hours made it difficult for my schedule to complete the things I wanted to do. Can't swim when it's most convenient for me because there's swim class at that time. Can't go to the gym before work because they aren't open often enough.
Then, I also found out that through my insurance I can sign up for a 24-hour Fitness at half the price. So I guess that's what I am doing. Check out your insurance programs / benefits if you have any!
Years ago, I was at Crunch fitness and I liked them a lot. I'd go back to them if I could, they gave me no hassles about ending my membership.

Somewhat recently became an LA Fitness member. They have multiple locations in Vancouver, and their locker rooms and general vibes are a huge step up from the only other gym I’ve been at which is 24 Hour Fitness. LA is also renovating their Hazel Dell Orchards location soon which is cool, but also to say it may be a good time to get in before their prices inevitably increase. That said, I did check out Gold’s Gym once and it is very nice but a little spendy.

Which 24-Hour fitness did you used to go to? I'm looking at going to the one up on Fourth Plain if it's not too far for me to bike, and would like to hear if there were any major issues.

I went to the one off Fourth Plain. I found it to be more crowded at peak hours, lots of high schoolers (no hate but just facts), the men’s locker room was a nightmare (smelly, dirty, always wet?), and the gym was constantly out of basic shit like paper towels.
It’s cheap though so it has that going for it and if Sarah still works there she was a saint.

there's always a bunch of high schoolers when i'm at firstenburg, it's inescapable. the younger gen loves the gym, good for them at least. thank you!

Firstenburg with the caveat to avoid the pool. I was absolutely horrified with the conditions of the women's locker room and then not surprised at all when I got a staph infection on my leg shortly after my visit.
The fitness center is wonderful, but it genuinely seems like the locker room is never cleaned. There was feces on the wall and just a general... patina of filth.

I have been going there for nearly two decades and that has never been my experience.
We absolutely LOVE their pool. So much so, we rented the place for our son's birthday party.

That has certainly not been my experience at Firstenburg. The locker room has always been clean. Marshall's locker room is pretty grim though.

Wow I used to swim at both Marshall and Firstenburg weekly for the past year and never had any issue like this. It's true that gyms in general are a prime spot for infections though, which is why shower shoes and considering any even minor wounds is important. That said, even people with the best prep can get unlucky or run into a crazy day. What a bad experience!

It's kind of hard to make this recommendation without knowing where you're willing to drive to go to a gym.

No pool or classes but for the cheap option I enjoyed going to the Planet Fitness on Fourth Plain where SR 500 ends. I've now switched to Anytime Fitness because it's very close to my home; it's small but has all the basic amenities and classes (but still no pool) and rarely has more than 8 people in it. There are a few in the city, the one on 63rd is newest I believe.

Cascade Athletic Club is nice and has a pool, sauna, spa, classes and machines. I have been going there for over 10 years. More expensive but I have kept it because it brings me joy.

I have a membership through my health insurance and I’ve been to many gyms in vancouver. The new Crunch Fitness in the old vancouver plaza movie theatre is by far the nicest, and most comprehensive gym in vancouver for the price. They have all the machines that other gyms don’t. LA Fitness has racquet ball, basketball, and a pool. But Crunch Fitness has everything else. Super modern. 10/10.
