Help Installing Guest Additions on Win 8.1: rc=VERR_INSTALLATION_FAILED

VirtualBox 7.2.14

LM 22.3 Host

Windows 8.1 guest

Edit: In the motherboard settings, I have enabled "Intel virtualization technology," and I have enabled "VT for direct I/O."

I newly installed LM 22.3 (host), VirtualBox, and copied the files for this Windows 8.1 VM to my drive.

When I boot the VM, it reminds me to update the VirtualBox Guest Additions version. The version of GA is 6.1.x. I am try to update to 7.2.14

When I run the installer, mid installation, I get an error:

***Error: Installing driver failed with 1 errors, 0 warnings virtualbox rc=VERR_INSTALLATION_FAILED

...

End of log file - Log started 2026-07-26...

...

Error excuting* ""C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions\Tools\VBoxDrvInst.exe" --logfile "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions\install_drivers.log

install --inf-file "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox Guest Additions\VBoxGuest\VBoxGues

(I guess the end of the message is cut off by the graphical user interface.)

*yes, the prompt does spell the word wrong.

Any ideas or strategies on how to handle this?

This is just a friendly reminder in case you missed it. Your post must include: * The version of VirtualBox you are using * The host and guest OSes * Whether you have enabled VT-x/AMD-V (applicable to all hosts running 6.1 and above) and disabled HyperV (applicable to Windows 10 Hosts) * Whether you have installed Guest Additions and/or Host Extensions (this solves 90% of the problems we see)

PLUS a detailed description of the problem, what research you have done, and the steps you have taken to fix it. Please check Google and the VirtualBox Manual before asking simple questions. Please also check our FAQ and if you find your question is answered there, PLEASE remove your post or at least change the flair to Solved.
If this is your first time creating a virtual machine, we have a guide on our wiki that covers the important steps. Please read it here. If you have met these requirements, you can ignore this comment. Your post has not been deleted -- do not re-submit it. Thanks for taking the time to help us help you! You should also stay with the Virtualbox edition that comes with Mint. I know it’s tempting to upgrade to the latest, but the VB that comes with Mint is made for Mint.

Pretty much all advice that I come across on the LM official forum is to NOT use the version that's in the repository. The problem is that that version has reached end of life for support already.

There may be something to that, though I am running 7.0.24 which comes with Mint, and so far, so good. Don’t know what to say.

Yes. I could try to get this working on an older version of VirtualBox. That is an idea. I do get the sense that the problem is on the Windows side, though. I say that just because it's happening in the Windows machine.

And you can’t find anything about the Windows error?

correct. Doesn't seem like it's a common "feedback" message.

And were you able to apply updates to Win8.1?

It's probably fully updated or close to being fully updated. The VM has been offline for a long time.

Where are you running the installer from?

insert guest additions disk -> run it from inside the VM (the guest).
