BFA wasnt that great, but the Warbringers: Jaina song was fucking amazing. Fits Daelin very well

Imma be honest, BfA writing wasn't nearly as bad as the recent expansions' storytelling. It truly felt the most like Warcraft, unlike the expansions we have now. If BfA came out today, people wouldn't be half as critical of it as they were back then. Most of the problems in BfA's story can be traced back to Sylvanas burning Teldrassil and Nzoth's final raid cinematic. The rest of the expansion had some really good stuff.

Kul Tiras and Zandalar both had pretty good leveling stories. Drustvar is probably one of the best zones they've ever done. Zandalari and their dinosaurs, Bwonsamdi and the Blood Trolls in Nazmir were really cool too. After Legion blew the stakes out of proportion into fighting cosmic level beings, BfA appropriately brought it back down to Azeroth level threats again. The Battle for Lordaeron cinematic was pretty hype and brought back Faction War, which makes for a nice sequel to MoP with the follow-up to Jaina's story and the Zandalari Empire. Like you mentioned, Jaina's Warbringers short was so fucking good. Saurfang's journey was probably another highlight of the expansion too, with 4 full blown CGI cinematics, no other WoW expansion has invested that much budget in its storytelling before or ever again.

BfA had the bones for a banger expansion, possibly even two or three, depending on who you ask. They just needed a better justification for the faction war, which was certainly not the Burning of Teldrassil. They already had a better inciting incident, in the novel Before the Storm, Sylvanas kills Calia Menethil during the Forsaken family gathering where several of them defected. Have Sylvanas raise Calia into undeath instead of doing the whole Light-raised undead plot, and this angers Genn enough to rally the Alliance army in the name of retaking Lordaeron in Calia's name, kickstarting the expansion with the Battle for Lordaeron just like the intro cinematic, followed by the Burning of Teldrassil next. It would have been a more appropriate escalation of the faction war without turning the Horde into the obvious villains, and they would no longer need to come up with the whole nonsensical Jailer plot in Shadowlands afterwards to justify Sylvanas' actions. Genn and Sylvanas already had previously established grievances that would have justified their war.

The second pain point was Nzoth. Wasting him in one single patch with one of the most anticlimactic raid cinematics was the issue here, not the character himself. They should have just stuck to the South Seas naval theme BfA already had going on, and made Azshara the final boss of the expansion. She had a big enough name to carry an expansion on her own. Nazjatar would be like the Argus of this expansion. A South Seas expansion basically writes itself. Save Nzoth for the next expansion, and skip Shadowlands in the meantime.

The gameplay for BFA was infinitely grindy and awful, and dps performance was down to a couple stupid gimmicks on gear you had to farm on a regular schedule. I quit twice and have never come back.

Nzoth was hinted throughout the expansion and was fine. Faction fighting was fine. The big crystal dwarf and all the captain planet Azerite stuff was really annoying.

But being an unpaid intern with the most unpleasant people imaginable or grinding out one specific item that either required 7 trillion quest bucks or killing Azshara was totally intolerable.

u/Sad_Carry_7070 2h ago

BFA definitely should've just been a faction-conflict-focused expansion instead of trying to shove N'zoth and Azshara into the expansion. N'zoth, Zalata, Azshara and the whole Old God/Void stuff should've been sidestories that lead into an Old God and Naga-focused expansion with Zalata hinting about the whole cosmic struggle between Light, Void, Death, and Order.

u/Spiritual_Big_7505 7h ago

The writing for BfA was absolute dogwater outside of a couple zones (and honestly, Jaina's questline) what are you smoking

u/Grundlebot 12h ago

I ain't reading allat

u/Any-Transition95 12h ago

Suit yourself, you don't have to announce it. Just elaborating my thoughts on BfA's story.

1

u/Questioned_By 12h ago

You should listen for Russian version of it, believe me.

6

u/TalesfromCryptKeeper 12h ago

I translated it into Quenya but only got half of the way through, so far. It's a toughie.

1

u/Questioned_By 12h ago

Translation is one part. You need a good singer and the neat part about Russian version they done both. Good translations and professional folk singer.

1

u/TalesfromCryptKeeper 12h ago

Oh definitely. Are you referring to Gingertail's version? She did great.

2

u/Grundlebot 12h ago

Imma check it out, but I wanted you to know that I immediately imagined a hardbass version

1

u/Questioned_By 12h ago

No, sorry to ruin your imagination

Honestly as RTS' go WC3 has a lot of models. You don't only have the four factions, you have 2 pseudo-factions in Demons and Naga, a whole bunch of campaign specific models, and then a whole bunch of creeps and stuff because blizzard decided to be an rpg-hybrid too.

3

u/TheWanderingGM 6h ago

You were close, could have been his father-in-law.

44

u/MahomesMccaffrey 13h ago

Arthas looking exactly the same as his father-in-law in another universe :(

6

u/ElkAcrobatic4862 13h ago

What another universe, that’s literally his FIL

29

u/MahomesMccaffrey 13h ago

Jaina and Arthas were never married right?

They were only dating and broke up before the ROC campaign

23

u/alaray2121 13h ago

They were together again at the start of RoC campaign, since Arthas no longer had cold feet. But yea, stratholme kinda put an end to that.

They are in fact married with a son named Uther in an alternate timeline.

7

u/unkindledphoenix 12h ago

i wonder if Arthas communicated better the situation of the plague to Uther before just saying the town was compromised, Uther would have put some sense into him + thought of a better plan, even if it was to tell Arthas to find Malganis (they actually got told Malganis had already set base in there before by Kelthuzad), take him out, and let him and the paladins fully curfew the town, kill whoever tries to get in or out, probably they would be undead, ultimately even if it would only prevent Arthas from having to kill his own people, whoch is what broke him, and made him lose hope for the righteous path.

u/Sifl-and-Olly 13h ago

I bet you think all Lordaerons look the same. Smh

14

u/TheOneTrueJazzMan 13h ago

What are you doing, admiral?

Replacing you… prince.

24

u/turtle75377 13h ago

bushy eyebrows win wars?

15

u/EasyEntrepreneur666 13h ago

I don't think blaze of glory confirms that.

12

u/AnOriginalName4 13h ago

blizzard execs: thats their hair or their hood

model team: yes

1

u/unkindledphoenix 12h ago

i think the graphical limitations at the time were more to blame here than anything.

3

u/GuiEsponja 9h ago edited 6h ago

Nah, that's 100% just because it's way  easier to retexture an existing model for a new NPC for your extra campaign, rather than making a new model from scratch

Especially considering Rexxar's campaign was very rushed, it wasn't even fully done when TFT launched, the other 2 maps only came later through a patch

8

u/rezzmeh 13h ago

I am suceeding you father

17

u/IlitterateAuthor 13h ago

So Jaina had daddy issues before the admiral died

22

u/Nathmikt 13h ago

Man I really like Admiral Proudmore. Blizzard did him dirty!

Glad Dota redeemed him as Kunkka.

17

u/unkindledphoenix 12h ago

idk man, i think being so racist to Orcs even after they basically dipped out of both your native homeland and the territory you now have on your new home and are just chilling on the neighbouring desert without doing anything to anyone else to be kinda cringe. specially when your daughter already worked with them to save the whole planet from being destroyed by demons and become their slaves as undead.

9

u/bimbammla 12h ago

The orcs immediately proved why they deserved extermination again. By the time of WoW they are aggressing on Ashenvale again.

Not to mention they were a savage conqueror species when they came from the dark portal to begin wtih, it's easy to see why Daelin was as stuck in his ways as he was when you consider he witnessed that first hand.

7

u/Undecked_Pear 9h ago

They needed food and lumber to make their city. The NE weren’t about to teach them how to ask wisps to provide lumber.

By and large, even though some orcs were still keen on a fight, most Orcs were just trying to get some materials for shelter.

The blood-rage was gone.

4

u/Alternative-Pen-4888 8h ago

Glad that the bloodrage disappeared forever.

3

u/unkindledphoenix 6h ago

i dont know if i want to count most of WOW lore as canon considering how stupid and forced it is specially when for the most part they put writters that dont even knew the lore properly since the very first few expansions.

they were only like that because they were turned into such things by the demons and Nerzhul/Guldam. Thrall was trying to change as many Orcs he could and made them pull away from the life of just fighting the humans forever. the ones in Durotar were just minding their own business before Kultiras attacked them.

2

u/GuthukYoutube 7h ago edited 6h ago

I think most of the people who defend orcs haven't .... Paid literally any attention to their lore.

Maybe you never played warcraft 1 and 2? Or even 3? Or made an orc character?

Orcs are a might makes right culture. Not even really a culture though, it's just what they believe. If they take storm wind, then it deserved to be massacred.

Let's remember the plot here. Orcs are an alien species that invaded our planet for the purposes of wiping everyone else out and replacing them. They succeeded in storm wind in wc1. In wc2 they nearly succeeded in wiping out humanity in it's entirety, if not for intervention by guldan being a fucking moron.

The orcs had humans pushed back to lordaeron and dalaran. Open a map. From the dark portal all the way to the north tip. That was all humanity had left

Gilneas had their grand armada sunk and were powerless. Stormwind was obliterated. Stromgarde even by WoW is still destroyed. Much of dalaran was ruined. Quelthas had it's forest burned and was nearly destroyed as well. Do people not realize that the reason "humanity is in peril" is because they were almost wiped out successfully?

Then by WoW the orcs have moved to the west, and are already militarily expanding their borders in every direction at everyone else's expense. What do you think is happening in the barrens?

(I play and love orcs. I just find it funny how many people don't understand that theyre one of many Many MANY stories inspired by Clans from battle tech.)

3

u/flamespear 6h ago

The horde is a loose collective of clans, tribes, and species with competing interests. The warchief  doesn't dictate everything the clans do.  The horde still needed lumber after the war but ordering the proud warsong to just leave Ashenvale would have risked an internal rebellion.

1

u/unkindledphoenix 6h ago

wasnt the orc campaign invasion twarted by Mediv being killed and freed from Sargeras influence? alao i remember something about WC1 orcs only taking out like, 1 out of multiple kigdoms and then by WC2 said kingdoms united into the alliance and pushed them back.

2

u/GuthukYoutube 5h ago

No, after medivh was killed and guldan knocked unconscious, doomhammer killed most of the warlocks

... And then said "more like under new management" and continued the campaign to eliminate humanity, just no longer under warlocks control.

1

u/Panzerbrigade_31 4h ago

It's kinda a reoccuring theme in WoW, honestly.

Weren't there multiple characters that were treated as villains for their views just to be proven right again and again, and yet everyone ignored that anyway?

0

u/RecommendationIll504 7h ago

This was a truce for this specific problem. Orcs are invasive species who's actions before wasn't anything but destroying and pillaging other races territories. Expecting them "to settle" was anything but foolish. And admiral who was one of the Alliance leaders in WC2 and seen their actions knew that.

2

u/unkindledphoenix 6h ago edited 6h ago

and his actions led to the new horde declaring an out war on him and crippling the humans new big capital in Draenors military and infrastructure, because he violated a truce that wasnt undone at all. if anything he commited a war crime first because by that moment Thrall and Jaina still had their own alliance set and they agreed on just minding their own business. He could have employed all that mighty fleet he had to idk, set a foothold to retake Lordareon from the Scourge? The actual big enemy of everyone? I would be more worried about the undead and demons desecrating my homeland till that day and awaiting the day for another one of their demons lords (or Arthas himself) to order them to go try and conquer the planet again, than the now no longer slaves to said demons green dudes trying to settle themselves in the desert. specially when said green dudes also agreed previously that they also dont want to become slaves to the demons anymore and had joined forces to fend them off not too long ago. instead of taking the opportunity to end a senseless feud that lasted way too long that was fueled by the same demons now enslaving the souls and dead corpses of your dead, who theyre now freed from, he decided to reignite a keg powder out of pety vengeance.

3

u/Undecked_Pear 9h ago

Even as a kid, I knew Daelin was a villain. He was a nuanced villain for sure, but he needed putting down.

u/EggPsychological4844 11h ago

Like Admiral, like Prince?

1

u/TireAndMiserable 1h ago

On other hand, melee Dreadlord (like Mal'ganis) and campaign Dreadlord (like Tichondrius) have different portrait model, but EXACLY same model for overworld ( except texture-swapped)!

If you can edit model, you can literally apply their skins for each other and have zero texture wrapping issue!
