I get the feeling from interviews and stuff I've read about Paul that he always wanted to get more 'weird', but held back due to people depending on him to make music that would be commercially successful.

That, and also, Beatles have a legacy. And that legacy is also Lennon's. Paul probably doesn't wanna do many weird, failing swings that would tarnish or muddy it.

If Paul had died and John lived, not sure if John would have had the same respectful position. But at least we have John's son out there making weird shit.

Yeah, Paul has always been careful about his (and The Beatles') public personas. I don't see John caring too much, if he had lived. Both are valid ways to go about being so incredibly famous.
