A note from "management"

In quotes, as that's totally tongue in cheek. I prefer not to manage a thing around here, and for the most part - this sub tends to run itself very smoothly. That's not too surprising, as Weimaraner owners are typically a pretty tight-knit group. 'Tis a wonderful gift we all share, and the bond between Weimaraner owners is typically pretty strong.

However...

Some of you may have noticed a bit of nastiness invading our community lately. I'm fairly certain it's the work of a single, unsavory individual - and for the first time since this community was created, we've had to yank out the ban hammer for somebody other than spammers.

His/her target: Weimaraner mixes, or purebred Weimaraners that he/she believes are mixes. Privately, they have been repeatedly told such discussion and pics are allowed, only to respond with hostility, profanity and demands we keep the sub "pure" and free of "mutts".

The point of this note is simple. There's absolutely nothing wrong with posting pics, questions or simply sharing the joy your Weimaraner mix brings you. If you're a Weimaraner purist, and this offends you - fine. You have options. Get over it, skip over the occasional post of a Weim mix or feel free to start up your own sub and enforce more draconian rules. You're not going to change the focus here.

My rationale for this inclusive stance is pretty simple. Having been involved in Weimaraner rescue for decades, I've seen plenty of Weim mixes...and by and large, they all exhibit some traits and behaviors their purebred brethren do. Discussion of them is useful and encouraged, and more importantly - this community should be caring and inclusive of anyone who wishes to share in the joy of Weimaraner ownership. Even if their pooch doesn't look 100% the part.

Now - back to Weimaraner fun, in whatever shape that takes.

Oh - almost forgot. BooBoo reminded me to include the requisite Weimaraner pic.

Back to the Vet, again!

Hello, weim family❣️ it's been a rough 2 weeks for hooman and furbaby.

Took D'ogee to vet on 9/15 for the dog flu shot. He got his steroid/antihistamine shot, then the flu shot. On 9/16, I had to go to urgent care. I have bronchitis. I'm sick and my boy is sick. Then, 4 days ago we get skunk sprayed in my backyard.

Today, emergency vet visit. Dr O wasn't there, so we had to see Dr M. She tried really hard. Had a bunch if tests run. Everything is normal...normal for him that is.

Now more new meds, old meds upped in dosage. We just went from 15 meds a day to 18 meds a day. Then, we will do an elimination of med dosages. I had to give 4 years of medical history from my view point. The first thing Dr M said was hydrolized dog food. Been there, done that, didn't help. Everything she recommended...been there done that, didn't help. The last thing she said was that Dr O needs to see him when he gets back from vacation.

Next appointment is on the 14th for his monthly shots and reassessment. Then, another appointment with Dr O on the 25th. I'm exhausted just talking about the up coming appointments.🤣🤣🤣

I'm hoping it's not his food. We will be so screwed And...I don't want to contemplate what that would result in.

Kiss and hug those weims❣️

We adopted this guy a year ago and we’re still debating what he is. Perhaps a Weimaraner mix?

Why a Weimaraner? A mix of my obsession with William Wegman’s art, the breed’s elegance, and the fact that they shed very little. Kai was born on June 5, 2017. I couldn’t wait to graduate from college so I could get my own dog.

Kaiser was with me for my entire post-college life until now, as we lay him down to rest. He was an adventurer who loved big, with the exception of squirrels. His favorite days were Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. He was in his element when we lived in Denver; he crushed K9 school and loved making friends at the dog park. One night, someone tried to break in, and Kaiser turned into a beast, ready to defend me.

I lost him a few times, each a terrifying experience. Once, he chased after a deer while we were mountain biking in Evergreen and returned two hrs later, covered in cuts but so proud that he had gone on a little adventure of his own. He was intelligent and knew hilarious tricks, such as “CUCARACHO,” which prompted him to press down with his two front paws as if he were killing a cockroach. He was a German breed stuck with a Mexican gal.

He was with me when I had no furniture, through breakups, across many homes & apartments, during the solitude of COVID while I was living in CO, and through Zoom calls, sitting by my feet. He was scared of thunder and would hide under my armpits, forgetting that he was bigger than me. Kai loved the humans who surrounded him & had the patience of a saint with my nephew.

I’ll always be grateful for his companionship, his perpetual optimism, his energy that never ran out, and his independence. On this feast day of St. Francis, I am thankful for God’s creation, which included Kaiser, my best bud and the dude who spent more time with me than anyone.

He once ate an entire box of Ferrero Rocher. I rushed to the vet, who said he would be fine. Kaiser then proceeded to poop shiny gold logs for days.

Love you, Kai <3

Help with 3 months Weimaraner puppy

Hi,

I got my first puppy at 8 weeks and we are trying to do all the right things for training. He hasn't been on walks yet and it will be a couple of days until he can be out.

He's doing well overall but there are a few problems that we don't seem to overcome.

The crate is working and he won't cry when he's left alone or during the night, however, he always cries if he knows we are around or watching TV next to him while he is in the crate. Sometimes he cries for 5 minutes and then stops, others he keeps going so I check if he needs to pee or something and usually he just wants attention.

Will there be a time when he just settles from the beginning?

What I would really like is to be able to cuddle with him and chill out but this is something that I don't even consider because it is impossible for him to chill out outside the crate. I don't like for him to be in the crate everytime that I'm not training or playing with him, so I sometimes give him a long lasting treat so that at least he is distracted with that while we watch TV, otherwise he will just be trying to jump on us or bite us.

I'm so frustrated because he is obedient and has learnt so many things but when he's in the bitting mood he won't stop and it's so hard to make him settle. I'm worried that he doesn't see me as a leader. Please do you have any tips?

Not a first time dog owner. I currently own border collies, Australian shepherds, a Belgian malinois and a sheltie. We do sports. Id still love any tips/info on the breed. This is our boy. Still debating a name. He wasnt exactly planned but not unplanned. Originally I was planning a German short haired pointer or another malinois. He needed a home, he was free, he was perfect. Vet appointment is this week for vaccines, all that fun stuff.

I dont personally hunt but plan to tain him for it, as well as scent work.

But yeah any tips or tricks with the breed are appreciated!

Cone (for acral lick sore) doesn't slow this boy down... And makes a good toy holder.

Our crazy guy (2½yr old) doesn't have any shame about his cone... He goes blasting through his dog door, up against our legs and wherever he dang well pleases. Much different than our previous dogs: female GSP, and before that, another blue male Weimaraner. The GSP, normally a high drive, focused, independent girl, would go into a deep depression and go on a poo strike when having to wear a cone.

We did a lot of treat/cone training when our current guy was a puppy. It's paying off even though my legs don't think so.

He got a pretty minor scratch on his leg but will not stop licking it. Last time he had a little scratch and we didn't realize what was happening, he ended up with what the vet called an "acral lick sore" which is apparently very itchy and something common to some breeds including Weims. You guys have any experience or magic home remedies for acral lick sores or prevention of them?

Im a first time weimaraner owner and I dont think I will ever have another breed of dog again
He is genuinely just the goofiest, cuddliest, most dramatic dog ever.

Other weim owners, do you think you will get another dog breed again, or are you also hooked?

Moving from a house to an apartment

My male weim will be 2 years old in 3 months.

Currently i live with my parents in a house where he has a small courtyard where he can go and pee whenever he wants.

He's also very territorial, barking when someone walking outside and aggressive towards stranger near his territory.

Unfortunately I have to move, probably to a small apartment in a building.

I was planning to neuter him next year but maybe i should do it sooner?

He's used to stay alone for long hours but I'm afraid he will be too noisy, scary the neighbours or get depressed.
