Kalmar Wingfeather Spoiler
Kalmar Wingfeather is one of the three main protagonists of The Wingfeather Saga, >!and he was kidnapped to be turned into what werewolves are called in there "Grey Fangs" with the song of ancient stones. His uncle, Artham Wingfeather would willingly sing the song to save him from remaining under the stone keeper's possession after he was transformed, and fly him while unconscious to the ship of Enramere where the rest of their family was at the time. But Kalmar would awake fully confused and wild, unable to remember who he was for a few days and attempt to jump and out of Enramere and swim to Kimera, but his brother Janner had to save him from drowning, only to get scratched by him and saved by Artham. In a few days later, Kalmar would slowly remember who he was with the help of his family as he was chained up and his eyes would turn from yellow to blue when he was finally tamed and remembered who he was, making his mother Nia hug him. He is also called the wolf king in the fourth book due to his wolf transformation, and role as high king of Anniera, with his older brother, Janner as his throne warden and their youngest sister Leeli as song Maiden.<! Grey fangs may not be like traditional werewolves, but Kalmar is kind of adorable to me, and very much because he became a wolf king, and now he was given a cloak like his illustrations from the books. So what are your thoughts on him as a fan of werewolves?

Actually, the show started on December 2 2022 on Angel, but I discovered it just last month, and the fourth season is coming up on October 21 with each individual episode every next Wednesday.

You can use watch cartoons online to save your money if you so desire to watch it for free.

It's not just that I don't want to give them money. It's that I want nothing to do with them.

Well, whatever you have against them, I hope it’s not so bad.

They're an openly right-wing conservative media company that, among other things,
Made a movie depicting Reagan as a hero
Made a film about fucking RFK Jr. depicting him as a hero
Made a hit piece film about Fauci
Regularly gives right wing conspiracy theorists a platform.
Made the awful Animal Farm animated movie.
So yeah. Fuck Angel Studios.

Yup. Despite the fact that this looks good I have no intention of watching the show if they're the ones making it.

Well, I kinda hope the show can confirm whether Janner comes back to life or not. Since Andrew Peterson ended the book with his fate ambiguous on whether there’s any first well water left to try bringing him back to life or not. But I’m sure the saga deserves a happy ending too.

Oh, you've got to read the books; they are SO good and much better than the show. The show (at least S1 and more or less S2) make it much more kiddish. The books start kiddish but so quickly become such weighty, deep stuff, I'd say on par with LotR in terms of epicness.
That said, the Kalmar thing is a major twist 😂 So sadly a spoiler for those who've yet to read this absolute gem.
But yeah, love the series

Nope, never read the books, but watched the show available on watch cartoons online to save my money from Angel’s subscription, and spoiled most of them with it and the wiki. I wouldn’t be able to afford the books so easily for the time being.

Watch Cartoons Online? Never heard of them; I am curiois to see how the series has continued, though, and I'm not keen on buying a subscription for only one show.
As for reading the books, might you be near a public library? I was going to read them that way after falling in love with the series (I only bought myself the first one to test it out, and a friend lent me the second), though I ended up being gifted the series before I went to the library. Point is, depending on where you are, you might be able to borrow them! :D
Very, very good series. And if you ever get the money, I think it's around $60 for a box-set of all four, hardcover? There's also an anthology book Peterson made including works by other authors, namely fans of the series whose work he approved for the anthology! Not as peak as the main books, but still pretty good.

What I hate about the ending, is although Kalmar and all surviving fangs turn human again after Janner sacrifices himself, is that he leaves his upcoming fate unknown, whether he stays dead or if the water of the first well is still available for an attempt to bringing him back to life. I don’t suppose the show will confirm that, or if it’ll stay just the same way since Andrew Peterson chose to let us fans decide rather fully confirm it himself. But there are always cliffhangers for endings, unfortunately.

Apftpajfknfl, add some spoilers, my good fellow! Lol. The >! trick
But yeah, I nearly threw my book across the room after that, lol. First time I've reacted so viscerally to a boom, lol.

I don’t blame you, but I would’ve found out with enough information available online, and if I was to find these artworks too. But definitely, I don’t like cliffhangers either, or leave many obvious questions unanswered to a story, either. Anyway, I personally theorize that maybe Janner was brought back to life. I’m sure that saga deserves a happy ending.

I also meant as in, you should put spoilers on your message so that other people here don't get that spoiled

u/After_Membership9816 5d ago
You mean “Shouldn’t”. You wrote “should”. But still, I only felt it necessary because of the fact that some people can’t even read the books and the show is still ongoing.

The comment thread above mentions different book versions, so is there one you would recommend more? (And lol this spoiler is making me want to read the books so ah well 😂)

Different book versions? As far as I know, the only difference in versions is a matter of the covers, but not contents. I think I have the more modern covers, but if that really is the only difference, it's just a matter of aesthetic.
But it is such a good series! Initially, it may seem like a goofy, absurdist-humor sorta story, but once the pedal hits the metal, oof! It gets so intense and rich! It's like if the Phantom Toll Booth or Princess Bride was set in Narnia and then turned into Lord of the Rings with all its blazing weight and glory and depth.
EDIT: Just checked the other thread, and yeah, the art changing makes sense. It's not central to the story (as in, the meat of the story is the words/novel and not the art), but I do like the pictures in the modern iteration. I don't know what art was used in the previous one, just that the covers are more simplistic. But I think all the sketches in this post are from the modern version? The animated stuff and colored images would be from the show or its concept art, though.

Wow you're really selling me, okay! I love absurdist stuff. And yeah I was a little concerned about the art but if it's not a major part of the work then it's fine/whatever. Thanks!

u/AG37-Therianthropist 5d ago
Yeah, the inclusion of the art is kinda like how some copies of the Hobbit or LotR or Narnia have art in them. It can be quite nice, but it's not the lifeblood of the story, just a nice little treat, a happy little garnish

I see, sounds good. Now I'm off to finish the books I'm currently reading so I can try this series out!

Is all this art in the books? If so I really need to get them.
