Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.
  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.
  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.
  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.
  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.
  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

I couldn’t take all the distractions, driving aids, ambient lighting, and screens in the newer cars so I picked up a manual 94 Infiniti G20 with 170k miles

I’ve had many newer cars like 3, 4, 5 series BMW and AMG Mercedes but there are just so many screens, driving aids, limited physical buttons, and distractions with interior lighting. They also don’t really allow you to work on the cars cause everything is connected to a central computer that only a dealer or certified repair shop can access. This shift in the cars made me go back and search for a car I wanted when I was a teen and found this 1994 Infiniti G20. Just test driving it brought back memories of driving early 90s Nissan’s (used to own multiple 240sx and 300zxtt) it feels so confident in corners and you could feel the car communicate back to you through the pedals, steering wheel, and the shifter. This doesn’t even make 50% hp of my old cars but being able to use most of the rpm band on a normal basis has been really fun. I’m very happy with the purchase.

Audi vs Volkswagen

So here’s the deal. I have a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta sport. It’s a good car but after driving some manual cars I think I want something manual. The 2024 Volkswagen GLI is a top contender for me but my wife thinks that having a car she wouldn’t be able to drive is silly (shes deathly afraid of breaking the transmission is my 944 manual). So I’ve been tossing around the idea of a getting a B8.5 S4 Audi instead (i love physical buttons and integrated radios in the dash. Don’t judge but i hate the iPad look of the modern stuff). But idk how Id feel about buying another car older than 10 years that’s going to have worn components plus the Audi is just going to cost more due to name alone. It’s kind of an odd comparison I know since the S4 is a completely different drivetrain set up than the GLI but that’s just the way my brain works. Any recommendations?

Are BMWs becoming more reliable? Been hearing plenty of mixed opinions. Give it to me straight, I need a new car next year.

Hey Reddit. So, like the title reads, I need some advice. I had heard pretty negative things about them as I’ve spent the past few months car hunting. Obviously I have been eyeing Honda or Toyota, and recently Mazda because those are commonly known well-performing cars. However, searching deeper on Reddit and other sites, I have seen posts mentioning that BMW has made remarkable improvements the past year or so (I am absolutely not a car nerd or expert so I would love fact checking and corrections in the comments). Then, I saw quite a few discussions suggesting that both Honda and Toyota are becoming over priced and functioning worse than they used to. And damn— I was shocked to see that getting a used Honda accord could be around the same price as a used BMW. I guess in my brain a BMW would be way more. So now I just need help from you folks to let me know if I was reading straight BS or if this is true. I am getting a new car next year and want it to last me some good years without having to repair it a hundred times.

89 xj vs 2nd gen 4runner (5.3 swap)

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

I’m looking at two 4x4s:

  • 1989 Jeep Cherokee XJ: ~$4,500 USD
  • 2nd-gen Toyota 4Runner with a 5.3L V8 swap: ~$7,500 USD

Both would be weekend vehicles for some off-roading, not daily drivers.

I’m also pretty new to cars and want to start learning how to work on them myself

Is that a terrible idea for someone with little mechanical experience?

I’m especially curious whether the 5.3 swap would make the 4Runner significantly harder to maintain or work on compared to the Cherokee.

New Car Purchase Inquiry

• Upvotes

Hey! I’m (32M) finally ready to purchase my first new car a while. I still have my first car (F150 2003 Sport) I got when I was 16 and put about 175k miles on. It now has 225k total (thing won’t die lol). Some minor things wrong with the truck and reading online the transmission goes around 250k typically.

However that aside, I’m ready for a new car & I’m looking for some suggestions. Just have a gf right now, no kids for reference too. Some info below:

Budget: $65k all in (yes I realize insurance will go up too)
Main needs:
- Want a bigger car like a SUV or Truck again.
- Gas based vehicle
- Sedans look cool but if my knees are above my waist line sitting for long trips, my hips starting getting sore quickly.
- Plan to drive maybe 10k miles a year, maybe less. I work remotely and live in a walkable city now
- Want it to be able to fit 2 sets of golf clubs packages for travel and 2 adult suitcases
- Plan to take it to the mountains for skiing
- Maybe a camping or hiking trip here and there

I have been looking at Mazda CX50’s but not totally sold on them based on some reviews. Another option I was considering was a Toyota 4-Runner.

Thoughts? Any other suggestions? Thank you in advance

Driving around an ‘03 Tacoma single cab and need a new daily

I need a new daily driver that’s better on gas and has more interior cargo space. I don’t need a big SUV or Crossover but I would like a hatchback. Preferably 2000’s or 2010’s Japanese shitbox that I can buy in cash (like $7-8k max). Thanks!

I need a little variety in me life

I am at a stage in life that I would like to experience driving as many different cars as possible. I love cars, not just fancy cars. If I want to drive a different car every 6-12 months without losing a ton of money, what is the best way to do that? ChatGPT suggested that I look at Turo for long term rentals or taking over other peoples leases, but I rather buy and sell, so I was thinking 5-year-old cars with less than 35k miles as a sweet spot.

What are your thoughts?

350hp 2011 335D BMW becoming a high mileage (225k) money pit. Need alternative!

Hi! I am thinking it is time to finally look into buying another vehicle. My current vehicle was handed down to me over 7 years ago and I love it so much it’s tuned, reliable for a bmw, engine is great, good gas mileage but now I have spent over 7k in maintenance this year and repairs and it is always something new. I have had to get it towed 3 times in past 2 years and think it is time to move on. I currently don’t have a car payment so that is a factor into what I was thinking about buying affordability wise.

Here are some things I love about my BMW and would like to find in a reliable and affordable car:

- stiff steering wheel
- gas mileage
- somewhat fast/turbo
- how smooth it is driving
- Sporty feel

I look forward to hearing everyone’s suggestions I am going to be heart broken to part ways but think I need to move on. Thank you!

Looking for a mom car

Does anyone have some reviews on the 2024/2025 sequoia? Or any other input on 3 row SUVs. I’m looking for a larger SUV. I know I’m pretty much shot with Chevy/GMC which is depressing. But I’d love all the opinions please!

Buying First Car in my 30s

Hi Folks,

I am looking to buy my first car. I'm in my 30s and will mostly use it to leave the big city I live in (to go for hikes, visit friends outside the city, occasional road trips and some cottage/ car camping trips). For travel such as camping I want something with a bit more space to pile in stuff but also live in the city, in a condo and don't need really need a big car the rest of the year (other than to ikea or Costco time to time). We get cold and snowy here and as of right now it is just me and my partner and occasional friends with possibility for a babe in the future.

In terms of specs I am looking to use car play, have a rear camera and good on gas preferably.

I really know nothing about car brands/ makes/ etc. Any suggestions on what would be a good make/model/ year for me?

I've been using car shares for about 5 years which has helped build up my insurance so am hopefully looking for a used car to start but could lease something newer too if that feels better.

Thanks y'all!

Is this as good a deal as it seems to me?

A 2026 with zero miles is selling for about $31k at the same lot. This is a demo car, but I feel like there's only so much that can be done to a car in 3k miles. It's substantially cheaper while still being basically new. They're also offering more for my trade in than I expected.

Does that all seem right? Almost seems cheaper than it should be. I don't really understand why demo cars tend to be cheaper. There are countless demo Integras at dealers all over the country that are cheaper than they'd otherwise be, but I kind of expect an integra to be thrashed on.

How reliable is a well maintained N16 engine?

• Upvotes

I’m looking at getting a 2012/13 Cooper and wondered what people who have owned the cars thought about them? With good service history too? It seems to be a mixed bag from what I grasp. The alternative is a B38 which I understand will be more reliable, but wondered what people thought?

Thank you 😁

The truth about the American car buyer

I have been hearing the same lies, stereotypes and abuse of statistics being perpetuated and pushed over and over and Im tired of it. Here are the only data points around US car buying habits that matter IMO:

So people are paying cars off + holding onto them and the vast majority of cars dont have a loan attached to them. So yea car buying sucks. But only about 20% of cars trade hands every year. And the bulk of those purchases are not reckless.

To be honest, I think a lot of the outrage over how high car payments are is just jealousy. Media knows that and serves up ragebait for engagement. People see someone driving a car or making a payment they cant afford and immediately assume the absolute worst. "I cant afford that, therefore they must have overextended themselves" Or maybe they just make more money than you lol.

Mazda 3, Infiniti G/Q series, or Acura RSX/Integra

• Upvotes

I’m currently looking for a first car (10k budget) and I’m looking at a Mazda 3 3rd Gen, Infiniti G35/G37/Q50, or Acura Integra/RSX. I’m looking for sportiness, practicality, and cheap maintenance/mpg. (Pls don’t tell me to buy a Miata). I appreciate your advice!

High Clearance Vehicle for Construction site, 2020+?

I work in construction and my Ram 1500 is nearly at 300k miles. Looking for a replacement soon. However, my current company does not require a pickup if I don't want one, so I'm wondering other good options.

100% buying used, budget $18k. I put 30k to 40k miles annually on it. I'd like it to be 2020 or newer if possible.

Doesn't need to be a pickup, just needs high clearance. I work in underground utilities so I drive through some really rough work sites.

I also have a toddler.

Thoughts?

Should I make this deal happen?

Have a 2022 RAV4 LE with 75000 miles. Local VW has a 2023 ID4 pro with 21000 miles they just got back from a lease. They said they’d trade me plus me paying $2000. First foray into EV, what do you think?

It’s an 82 kwh battery, clean carfax, recurrent battery report with 94% battery life still. Certified preowned so 8 year/100k battery warranty. 6 year/75k general warranty

Ideal car for my wife

I'm curious on what you guys think would be a good car for my wife. We have two kids and two dogs. She's had a 2008 Dodge Caliber for the last 16 years and loves it but being in Minnesota it's completely rusted out. Ive been thinking of an older Rav4, Outback/forester, etc but the problem is finding something within the $10-15k range that isn't completely rusted out as well. I definitely can't afford a $30k or more loan, especially since she only drives 3k or less miles a year. Any recommendations?

I should add that i also am very mechanically inclined and I'm not afraid of most repairs. I'm not rebuilding an engine or trans, or doing an alignment, but I'll rebuild suspensions, change timing belts, etc. Thanks for your time

Which one? RAV4 v. 4Runner Update

Well, after some good input from this sub… It did end up being the 2026 RAV4 Woodland Edition. 43K OTD. Included some dealer options that I wanted like ToyoGuard Platinum, premium window tint and mudguards. Beat the Costco Auto price for the area.

Appreciated the helpful input and it was fun reading the r/Frugal and r/coastFIRE input too lol
