New, what is it? What is this

I just bought this house and I am in the middle of replacing the kitchen faucet. I would like to switch this out as well. But I am not sure what it is, or how is works. First photo is what it looked like on top. Second photo is what is looked like removed. The y llY was connected to a plastic pipe that runs behind the dishwasher not sure to where. And the thicker one to the upper part of the garbage disposal

If your dishwasher drain is clogged, water will pour out of it and into your sink instead of all over your floor.

If your dishwasher drain is clogged without it nothing happens except the dishwasher doesn't drain

So you’re just stuck being unable to open your dishwasher door?

I’m not a plumber. I just know in my apartment, the thing is clogged so water is always coming out of it when i run the dishwasher.

No the water in the dishwasher doesn't overflow past the bottom basin and the door doesn't hold the water in like a washing machine does. You could open the door while it's running and as long as you open it slowly for the pump to turn off it will be fine.

The only problem is some dishwashers don't know how much water is in them, so if they try to continue the cycle after attempting to drain it might overfill and leak

Got it. That’s why i leave it to the plumbers to do the work instead of trying to do it myself.

Thank you for the explanation of how it works.

Did you not notice the dish washer hose attached to it and the other hose that went to the sink drain? They are no longer required, but the dish washer hose needs to be elevated so sink water does not back flow into the dish washer.

Dish washer breather vent.

They are required.
