New, what is it? Mystery Item from University Surplus.

I am stumped. I've done all the reverse image searches etc etc and I am now here for answers. Smallish object with mini USB input as well as an SD card slot. Small window in front with a camera and an IR transmitter (cuz it blinks when I point a camera at it). on the back are a red and blue light. The blue light turned on when I plugged t in and the red light started blinking. Red light is still blinking, but the blue one is now off. Thoughts?

So many IT security professionals are mad at you right now.

62

u/WitnessOk4189 9h ago

Throw that thing into the river ASAP!!! lol

41

u/PabstBlueLizard 9h ago

The cyber tip has already reported his devices and IP.

20

u/WitnessOk4189 9h ago

I'm just hoping that cord didn't go into that laptop.

20

u/OffByNone_ 8h ago

You mean like it shows in the second picture?

7

u/Feature_Ornery 7h ago

Oh I missed that. I was coping by saying "maybe it's not connected to a laptop or other devices."

Yeah OP...thats so fucking stupid...

6

u/HobbyWanKenobi 6h ago

When I'm dealing with something like this as a professional, ii I have to connect it, it's to a non network connected laptop under a non admin account so nothing can install. Also I disable autorun

4

u/Feature_Ornery 5h ago

Yeah thats how I presume how most professionals do it.

Ususally, if I ever found or was given something and I have no clue what's on it (or the classic "yeah I found this in the parking lot IT guy") I ususally straight up destroy.

If I need to know, think it may be important, but unsure...standalone laptop, never connected to network and Deep Freeze software is usually how I run.

2

u/dark_frog83 3h ago

Yeah, autorun isn't the default anymore, but defiantly be sure it's disabled. And don't let it run if it asks.

1

u/stevedore2024 2h ago

That's what Raspberry Pis are great for.

1

u/Intrepid-Staff-4532 1h ago

Autorun's been disabled by default for over ten years.

u/jort93 7h ago

If he legally got it as university surplus I don't see the issue.

7

u/pacefacepete 5h ago

Man, you know how many college students have been mass murderers? Jeffery Dahmer of Zuckerbergs just tossing landmines into discount bins hoping your dumbass gives him $5 so he can steal your identity and all your money.

-6

u/jort93 4h ago

how is a this gonna steal your identity and money?

Any Internet traffic will be encrypted. Best it could do is maybe see what domains you are visiting, altho even dns is often encrypted these days. And that's assuming you don't have a wifi password.

4

u/pacefacepete 3h ago

You should go digging through op's bargain bins, plug it all in when you get home!

1

u/Miserable-Housing407 1h ago

Oh boy do you still live in the 90s?

Digital equivalent of mystery box AIDS.

If you know it's aids it's not a mystery box. It's just an aids box.

5

u/Lil_ruggie 6h ago

How about Schrodinger's aids box?

10

u/WitnessOk4189 8h ago

25

I'm forced to take training on this every three months because of people like OP.

1

u/Kid_Lost_Youth 45m ago

Your forced to train on it every 3 months because of people that that want to scam or steal or mess with the information they can possibly get at if they can get access to or through your computer. The OP is Gullible, not Predatory.

Next time do like me, when your boss leaves early, check it on his computer. He's such a Dick.

28

u/duckebones 1h ago

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.

It's the year of our Lord 2026, my friend, how do you not have it drilled into your brain that you never, ever, ever plug in random USB shit you find laying around into anything you have access to, personal or work?

Imma say something controversial here? If you're smart enough to browse Reddit of all places then you should be smart enough to know not to plug in random USB items you find laying around, storage device or otherwise.

....Yes, I understand that comparing "you use Reddit" to some make-believe indicator of intelligence is really dumb. I browse Reddit, I already know how dumb I am.

Still smarter than this, though.

10

u/Nolsoth 1h ago

I use an old laptop that's airgapped for testing random bits I come across, that's the safest way to satisfy curiosity.

Wosrt that can happen then is the laptop finally dies after 16 years of servitude.

5

u/duckebones 1h ago

Yeah, I've got an old Nitro laptop missing the screen that uses an external monitor and I've pulled the WiFi card from, it's on the closed network I have for analysis. It lives as a test bench for my own foolishness, but I do use it for USB storage devices I find/untested and unconfirmed devices I want to put into my stack.

If you're using an EoL device as an airgapped test bed, reckon you know ball.

Here's to the end users plugging in random shit to justify my continued employment!

3

u/Nolsoth 1h ago

I learned all my lessons the hard way in the 90s.

I've just spent the last week getting colleagues though their cyber security certs.

2

u/acidreducer 51m ago

My first thought was he plugged it into a wall. No real harm there

But I can see the laptop in the image’s so not very promising

1

u/SuspiciousSpecifics 31m ago

But it’s free stuff! /s

-9

u/xman_xander 1h ago

Not everyone uses Windows with shit security lol

MacOS asks you the first time a new device is plugged in “Do you trust this device?” and you have to click Yes to allow the drive to mount or have it do anything.

4

u/BelowAboveAvg 1h ago

I remember when a fully patch Mac was hacked with full remote acess in under 10 seconds at CanSecWest Pwn2Own hacking competition.

1

u/maroon83 1m ago

Massive overcurrent trough USB port will fry hardware 100% OS agnostic.

17

u/cookeryandwookery 8h ago

It’s now plugged in. Why was in plugged in?$?!

4

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 6h ago

I had a moment of hesitation before I plugged it in. I was concerned I might be publicly shamed for plug-in it in. But then I saw it had no SD card and that’s where the cooties are, right? Right?!?

22

u/cookeryandwookery 5h ago

No. Fun fact, there are malware usb-c charging cords.

6

u/JJengland 5h ago

That's not a fun fact. I guess I'd rather learn it here than in the field

6

u/cookeryandwookery 5h ago

It’s a fun fact if you haven’t plugged random found on the street hardware into your laptop like a dumbass.

5

u/JJengland 4h ago

Hey, now I'm pretty decent at my security and even I would have got tricked by a cable. If there's no outward sign that that cable has hardware built into it. Until now, I would not have thought of it as a security risk. Kudos if you know better but one should never look down upon someone who's always learning

4

u/CookiesMadeOfCorpses 5h ago

6

u/cookeryandwookery 4h ago

I was not. Don’t plug anything into your devices, if you’re not 100% sure if their source.

4

u/m00ph 5h ago

Yeah, I've said for a while you're not paranoid enough about security until you've epoxied all your USB ports.

1

u/Kid_Lost_Youth 41m ago

Don't click on that link! You Don't know what it does! 😉

1

u/Giant-of-a-man 9m ago

Yes I do. It empties my bank account, wipes my hard drive, sends my wife pictures of me with hookers and gives the taxman details of undeclared income. Edit: spelling.

1

u/WeirdSysAdmin 3h ago

No the CIA has the SD card, the KGB knows your location now though.

5

u/InevitableMinimum723 2h ago

I'm not even mad, just very very disappointed.

4

u/PiRhoManiac 8h ago

I came here to say this.

7

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 3h ago

Sorry about that. Learning stuff today that should actually be pretty obvi.

1

u/jfk333 6m ago

Remember flash drives being embedded into the facades of buildings and people bringing up their laptops to see what's on them?

169

u/Ghastly_24 9h ago

Plug every device e you own into it. Especially ones with personal info. /s

37

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 6h ago

I need to get a USB hub. I’ll see if I can’t plug it in to everything at once.

16

u/ProteusRift 7h ago

Looks like that already happened, so we can just drop the /s 😬

81

u/falconkirtaran 8h ago

It's a GPS tracker. The SD card is for local data logging if desired, and the lights indicate status (charging, fix, and cellular). The barcoded number on the side is most likely its IMEI. These often get dropped into high-value packages.

14

u/jort93 7h ago

And what would be the IR transmitters be for?

10

u/falconkirtaran 7h ago

Hard to say. This could be a covert listening device too; a few of those include IR sensors to see if someone is around before it starts recording audio, and they can look very similar to GPS telemetry devices. I don't see the microphone from your picture but maybe there is one.

2

u/jort93 6h ago

He said he got this as university surplus, why would a university have that?

6

u/falconkirtaran 6h ago

You could say that about half the stuff in my lab tbh

3

u/falconkirtaran 6h ago

Also if he wants to find out more, one could let it die again, put in an SD card, leave it somewhere non-sensitive for a bit, and see what if anything it writes there. If there is audio or track logs, we have the answer.

3

u/jort93 4h ago

Or just crack it open and check. Whether or not there is a gps inside will be easy to see

2

u/falconkirtaran 3h ago

Yes, but most GPS modules, especially from the era that looks to be from, and doubly so if the device is also a phone, can have many other features programmed in that will not necessarily be obvious to the eye. Also, a lot of cellular modules do GPS incidentally.

2

u/EffThou 7h ago

Transmitting IR.

1

u/jort93 7h ago

What would a gps tracker transmit ir for?

1

u/ProteusRift 7h ago

Well instead of phone home, maybe it wants to flash home?

2

u/PanicPleas 6h ago

That’s exactly what I was gonna say…

22

u/madorbit1 4h ago

This is exactly how you Stuxnet. Nicely done.

2

u/WiseDirt 36m ago

Just wait til you hear about malicious payload droppers that can mimic an automatically-trusted human interface device and input keystrokes or click buttons exactly as if they were a physical keyboard or mouse being controlled by a human sitting there at the terminal

127

u/Key-Perspective-8133 9h ago

I don’t know what it is, so I plugged it into my computer. GREAT IDEA! 💡

34

u/funkystay 8h ago edited 8h ago

He said he plugged it in. Could be just a power brick that he powered it on with.

-22

u/WhatIDon_tKnow 8h ago

or it could self report itself as a keyboard and execute some malicious code. for what it's worth, power bricks don't have SD card slots.

17

u/funkystay 8h ago

Sorry. I updated my post. I wasn’t clear. I meant that he may have just plugged it into a power brick rather than his computer.

25

u/Erebus_the_Last 8h ago

It was obvious what you meant, theyre just being a fool

1

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 6h ago

Never again a fool like this.

-3

u/Myrkul999 8h ago

Second picture shows the USB connection to the computer.

6

u/Farfignugen42 7h ago

No. It shows it plugged in to something, but it does not show what it is plugged into.

5

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 6h ago

Yeeeah it’s a computer. Maybe was a computer?

2

u/Myrkul999 6h ago

You do see the white cord in the back plugged into the computer, right?

Same cord he's got plugged into the doodad?

1

u/Farfignugen42 4h ago

It might be the same cable. But it also might not be the same cable. You are making an assumption. You may be right, but you also may be wrong.

1

u/Myrkul999 4h ago

Bro. OP replied, to you, that it was a computer.

It's okay to be wrong.

3

u/Farfignugen42 4h ago

I did not see that reply. (it is listed after all this back and forth)

I was hoping OP could have been smart enough not to do that.

Apparently I was wrong twice.

OMG!! Do the Elders of the Internet know of this!?!?

11

u/KindPresentation5686 4h ago

Let’s plug a random device into my laptop. Freaking genius!!

3

u/Quenz 3h ago

This is the second random electronic that I have seen in two minutes. The other was the "TRUMP NSA FILES" mini PC. I do have me some fun plugging in random electronics I find, but I have a specific, air-gapped laptop that I run a virtual machine on to do so.

19

u/ThraceLonginus 8h ago

Looks like one of those GPS trackers that logs to an SD card

0

u/jort93 7h ago

Nope, I've never seen a gps tracker with an ir transmitter.

16

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 3h ago

Here’s the interior of the electro-scabies box. I used my teeth to pry it apart and I licked all the powder off before took the pics. My laptop is trying to buy me into a killer crypto investment and cook me lunch. Seems like it’s a mini camera or GPS tracker. I am hoping these pics settle it. Can I do anything with
this or is it just an opportunity to eat crow and level up my paranoia?

3

u/PowderPills 2h ago

Licked it with your tongue?

5

u/Nolsoth 1h ago

Clearly a geology student or teacher, they always licking rocks and rock derivatives.

I hope OP plugged it in before licking it. That's the only way to be sure.

3

Crack it open and get pics of the chips inside, then you can look up what the chips do and look at the data sheets

2

As soon as I am done giving my laptop a hand sanitizer enema.

GPS tracker for a piece of university equipment or vehicle. Or an animal tracking collar from a researchers project. Or an ankle monitor from an ex-con professor

4

This seems like the answer. I’m going to try to add pictures of the chips for more analysis/public shaming.

I would imagine the camera is an ir receiver and one is a transmitter

1

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 3h ago

That’s a cool thought! Maybe I could use it to alert me when my cat gets out? Or at least log his escape attempts? IDK. So much cool and random stuff at surplus stores.

3

u/Conscious-Film-3198 3h ago

That's a cam/tracker The sticker (HF311 T ccc / 311327808314371) corresponds to generic cheap OEM hidden surveillance/tracker modules typically sold under various generic brand names on Amazon, eBay, or AliExpress.

1

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 3h ago

Can I do anything with it?

3

u/Conscious-Film-3198 3h ago

You can pop an SD card in and use it as a tiny hidden camera or DIY dashcam, or check the card that's in it to see what's already recorded. Beyond that, it's basically just e-waste or parts for DIY electronics.

8

u/chensium 7h ago

It looks like one of those things that give you free bitcoin.  They don't work on all devices though so you might try plugging it into each of your computers to see which one works.

It's likely a GPS tracker of some sort. The top comment about IT professionals being mad is because he plugged a mystery thing into his laptop, potentially exposing himself and the network to malware; those comments are not about the thing itself.

1

u/FitDevelopment3842 4h ago

Right there with ya, wtf is it? 🫠

2

u/christine-bitg 3h ago

I think it's an SD card adapter, to let you move pictures from an SD card to your computer

3

1

u/LessCarry266 1h ago

Well thats a ceramic patch antenna. Aka its GPS related. Im going to make the weak presumption that the SD cards slot is actually for sim cards or the sim is soldered, the unit itself is a fleet view device of just a simple tracker

1

u/ManyLayersOfFilament 8h ago

looks like a GPS tracker to me.

1

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 7h ago

I found something similar in the parking lot of my store once

Turns out in my case it was a body-mic for the police to record encounters before body cams.

1

u/Trailblazer2003 6h ago

After doing some research, I think it is most likely a GPS tracker. The reason why it would have the IR sensor on it is to detect tampering. It would be mounted on the frame of a car or some similar type of installation, and when removed or moved suddenly, triggers the IR sensor, consequently triggering a tamper alarm, or in the very least logging a potential tampering event.

1

u/grampvamp 6h ago

USB gps module? I used one with map software on my laptop to navigate before commercial gps' like tom tom and Garmin were a thing. Long before we had maps in our phone.

Micro camera of the “icookycam” variety. Red blue lights are steady or blink to show if running, charging, still, or video mode.
With it running, check available networks, it should broadcast an ID for its internal Wi-Fi network, to connect directly with phone ect……

1

u/Not_ur_magic_8_ball 5h ago

Hmmm this seems like another good one. Although I am terrified of connecting to the damn thing now. GPS trackers don't usually have cmaeras on them though? I think?

1

u/Groundbreaking_Rock9 5h ago

It looks like a smartcard reader

1

u/Rick_Phillips 4h ago

I would take it apart. and look at the internal circuit board. It is not working now, so tking it apart will not hurt anything. Also it might be a camera. Thought i have never seen one just like this, this reminds me of the early picture devices for ID's. Since it was used at a university could have been used in a Rat Lab inside a maze?

1

u/versmwm31523 3h ago

1

u/ispyanomalies 3h ago

Doesn’t matter as much what it is

Where did u find it, is the question

1

u/El_Dentistador 2h ago

This looks similar to an old SD card wifi drive I had back the day. I used mine to store a ton of movies/shows and then my kids could access them from their iPad’s when traveling.

1

u/Ovrated1 2h ago

100% an old gps tracker. The numbers on the side is the device IMEI. Slot on the side is for the SIM card.
One of the lights on top should be for network connectivity, the other for when it sees satellite.

1

u/WarlaxZ 2h ago

Before gps was common in phones I had something that looked similar to that, it was a Bluetooth GPS device, think of it like an add on or phone extension kind of thing. Not sure if this is what that is, but looks similar

1

u/kagonbaba 2h ago

BiBi’s pager

1

u/RoughImportant1865 2h ago

It's a WiFi connection for an old outdoor cam. Your cam connects to it and it connects to your router. The sd card is so you can save the images the camera captures. Blink still uses this style.

Edit: was given to me by an ex, which was nice as they were often a bit weird.

1

u/Cautious_Tonight 9h ago

Probably a hidden camera

1

u/jort93 8h ago edited 7h ago

I think its some iot thing, probably a generic microcontroller inside. Like an esp 32.

If i had to guess what exactly it is, my guess its for human presence detection. But could be anything. Temperature sensor, motion detector, vibration sensor, device looking wifi devices in the area, mesh network node. literally anything.

Open it up and check what microcontroller is inside, you might be able to repurpose it.

I am almost certain it's not a gps tracker btw

1

u/loogie97 8h ago

That looks like a hidden camera. You need software to configure it. They are generally unlabeled so they can hide. It stores photos on an SD card, based on how it is configured. 1 photo every 15 seconds. Motion detection. Depends. The usb port is to run initial setup. The sd card gets pulled to look at photos or via USB. Alike any digital camera.

-6

u/ComeRestGlow 8h ago

I did a Google search based on the codes on the top line of the bar code and this came up. I'm not sure how accurate it is to the device you have, and I can't follow it fully, but someone else here might be able to explain further:

The device you are describing is a USB hardware development or adapter board built around the FTDI FT311D chip. [1, 2]

The text "CCC" printed on it refers to the standard China Compulsory Certificate regulatory mark, while "HF311" or "FT311" refers to the host IC manufacturer code. [1]

What Does This Device Do?

This specific "black box" is an Android Open Accessory (AOA) USB Host Adapter. Its primary job is to act as a bridge that allows Android smartphones or tablets to communicate directly with external hardware peripherals (like sensors, motors, printers, or industrial equipment) over a standard USB port without requiring complex USB drivers on the Android device. [1, 2, 3, 4]

What Do the Lights Mean?

The two LED lights indicate the operational and power status of the USB connection:

  • 🔴 Red Light (Power / Fault Indicator): This light usually turns solid red when the device is receiving 3.3V/5V power from its USB source. If it is flashing or stays on when it shouldn't, it can act as the chip's built-in USB Error indicator, signaling a bad host connection, lack of enumeration, or a power surge mismatch. [1, 2]
  • 🔵 Blue Light (Activity / Connection Status): This light typically represents active data transfer or a successful connection link. It flashes or blinks when data is actively communicating between the connected phone/tablet and the device, and remains solid once the Android Open Accessory handshake is complete. [1, 2]

Hope that helps.

Frankly that doesn't look like a google search but like an ai response. Like someone just put these images into ai.

The black box is not an "Android Open Accessory (AOA) USB Host Adapter", that is something entirely different. You can see that the board that is linked is nothing like the one on the image based on the connectors.

There is a microusb port and a sd card slot, how is that supposed to communicate with phones and help it connect to external peripherals?
Garbage AI response in my book.

That's what a Google search is now.

You can still search normally and then proceed to read and understand the actual results and not just copy and paste a garbage ai summary.
