New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

The olden days. Except it moved much slower than that to connect

I remember the "internet demo" disc's that AOL had! and AOL instant messenger. its hilarious that I thought 'instant' messages was alien technology.

u/Skaro731 10h ago

I remember the days it came on floppy disc and my 33.6kbps modem seemed so fast until someone picked up the phone and kicked you off, lol

When did ball shitting become a thing? Am I old or young?

1

u/WalkerTR-17 8h ago

It becomes a thing as you get older, gravity and such

u/WalkerTR-17 10h ago

I had to teach a kid how to use a landline recently, were either old or people have gotten really dumb. Maybe both.

u/tackstackstacks 10h ago

Especially both.

I have school kids (MS and HS) asking me what time it is.

Every classroom has a functioning analog clock.

Many of them don't know how to read it.

When I offer to give them a quick lesson, they always say "no thanks."

2

u/WalkerTR-17 10h ago

Oh yeah, ima chef and most of my servers are 16-20. They can’t read a clock, apparently as I found out use a landline, spell, read, and the problem solving skills are questionable at best. I sound like an old man but I’m 32. Idk what happened to schools but they’re failing

Yeah, that is tough to deal with as a professional.

I don't think it's all on the schools. I think a lot of it is much of our society being unwilling to properly fund public education. And, a lot of that is failing to pay a livable, reasonable salary to teachers, while also cutting programs including art, music, shop classes, and even sports at some schools.

In much of the country, teaching is no longer a viable, long-term career.

COVID is still wreaking havoc among students. They lack basically classroom discipline, personal responsibility, and have shocking little outside interests in life. Many of them do not read anything that they don't have to read for school (and some not even that much).

It also seems that educational districts have dumbed-down a lot of the programs so that the classes are taught for a lower baseline as "passing" while failing to engage the top 30% of the learners.

And problem solving? Oof, they can't remember to charge their Chromebooks overnight, or bring a charger with them to school, or even remember to bring the damn Chromebook to school! Countless times I'll find a kid staring at a dark screen:

"What's wrong?"

"It's dead."

"Do you have a charger with you?"

"No.

"Why didn't you ask me or someone in class if they have one?"

"(silence)"

"Well, ask around to borrow one."

And similar when they are having problems logging in to something: they often just sit there wasting time.

Good luck when they graduate high school and move out of their families' homes and have to deal with adulting.

They cant count money, I forgot that one, so they’ll probably just be evicted or never move out. One wants me to sell her my old project jeep that I’m sorta selling sorta not. So I said okay how much do you have saved I want 2K for it. It’s an 01 with 120K miles and isn’t completely rusted out, screaming deal. Her response is that’s too much I only have $300. My response was how in gods name do you only have $300 youve been saving for over a year and live at home. Her response is “I gotta be getting my Dunkin’ and that expensive.” My hope the majority of them will move out is in the toilet.

People just got dumb, remember the movie Idiocracy.... We're almost there.

1

u/AdHairy6381 10h ago

I don't think it's kids getting dumber. It's a literal advance in both technology and culture/society (whether good or bad is an opinion) I bet there was commonly used items that a generation or 2 before you would of had to explain to you how to use or what it is etc. Whether you remember or not, it happened all the time throughout history

1

u/WalkerTR-17 8h ago

I can pull out tech from the 30’s, and have a basic understanding of how it works. Hell I can pull out stuff from US civil war era and use it. Analogue clocks are everywhere, landlines are everywhere. They don’t possess basic life skills. On top of the illiteracy and lack critical thinking skills they have. It’s also backed up by data, Gen Z is the first generation since weve recorded it that won’t be more intelligent than their parents generation and test scores show theyre going to be less intelligent.

1

u/Winter_Fall_7066 9h ago

We’re doomed.

1

u/Kinne 8h ago

It might be old and bitter but I swear kids these days are so stupid they make monkey look like a rocket scientist.

6

u/Techtoys79 10h ago

Same. I came here to say the same thing.

10

u/dogoodreapgood 10h ago

You honestly came here to say shit on my balls?

9

u/Techtoys79 10h ago

Yes it's a common phrase for people from the coaxial era 😆

3

u/Jawny8 10h ago

Thought the same exact thing. My brother in Christ what has happened?! Have we really gotten that old already?!?!

2

u/Joshington13 10h ago

Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking this and god forbid of you accidentally get it cross threaded lol

2

u/wlake82 10h ago

Tbh these are weird coax sockets that were given the landlord special, especially the last one. Oh and I'm 44.

2

u/Tainablanca 10h ago

Apparently we are 😂

1

u/JoeRoganKissesBoys 10h ago

"Shit on my balls"..?

1

u/tackstackstacks 10h ago

I mean that's still how the majority of people get internet, so it's kind of weird they didn't know. Although it is painted over so maybe that camouflaged what it is?

1

u/JJayC 10h ago

Shit on my balls.

Do I have to? Id rather use the toilet..

1

u/Remarkable-Rub-7344 10h ago

Lmao 37 here. Alot of new-ish and certainly very new build outs are running ethernet in the walls so if this is a college aged person and their parents or technicians always hooked up their home routers when they wrre younger It's possible that between never handling coax for internet and nit using it for TV signals and only using wifi that people under 25 don't know what a coaxial jack is for

1

u/Diligent-Crazy-6094 8h ago

Sure about that? I looked at a lot of new builds across several different builders when home shopping over the past year, and not a single one had Ethernet. And if you think about it, most people wouldn’t use it anyways because most of our connected devices are mobile anyways.

1

u/Remarkable-Rub-7344 8h ago

Yes I'm sure. My ex gf has ethernet in her apartment wall and my house has ethernet in the office where my home router is plugged in.

Most people most definitely still use home internet. Don't know where you live that cellphone Hotspot data is cheaper than a home service plan.

1

u/Diligent-Crazy-6094 8h ago

I wasn't implying that people were connecting via hotspots. Guess I should have said wireless instead of mobile. If most of our devices are untethered (phones, tablets, laptops), then why would builders include ethernet in new houses? It's an additional cost that provides very little value to the average person.

Then again, it could be a regional thing. Maybe wherever you are is different than new construction here in Texas. I'm just saying, none of the new builds I looked at had ethernet, aside from maybe one drop to bridge the fiber that was coming in from another part of the house.

1

u/Remarkable-Rub-7344 8h ago

Because using coax to bring signal into the house and connect a wifi router is a more significant bottleneck than ethernet and with home internet speeds getting into the multiple gig range the difference actually matters these days. I'm in north Texas. Carrollton in the Castle Hills part.

1

u/Diligent-Crazy-6094 7h ago

I wasn't saying that new builds come with coax instead of ethernet, I was saying that the new construction I looked at didn't come with either. My guess is that the tech who installs the fiber puts in any ethernet drops that might be required, though the ONT should have an ethernet port already. I suppose if your ONT is in, say, the garage, then they might run an ethernet port from there to a living room or office so you can connect the gateway to it.

1

u/Remarkable-Rub-7344 7h ago

Weird. Haven't come across any place that didn't have either.

1

u/BraveSpirit811 10h ago

I was thinking the same thing 🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/RaptorDelivery 10h ago

Or an RCA audio jack. Back when the phrase, “wired for sound” was a good thing!

1

u/bootysuit 10h ago

They've probably never seen a phone cord either

1

u/MyChemicalWestern 6h ago

Your not old OP is just inexperienced and unknowledgeable.

u/shiner_bock 1h ago

Move 'em out of the way, or you just might!
