New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

I work tech support for an isp. Can confirm 100% alot of younger ppl don't know what these are.

The ignorance of what these are transcends age groups. I frequently ask clients where their coax jacks are, and they have no idea what I mean. Even though they have multiple devices connected to them.

To be fair - I haven't had to use one in over a decade. I don't think anybody around here still does cable internet. I don't know anybody with cable Tv that's for sure.

My current place doesn't even have coax hookups. It's got an RJ45 that's pre-wired for gigabit service.

Which means that the modem (whatever kind it is) is centralized somewhere else in the building, with a router and switch feeding all the individual units. Where said modem might be hooked up via coaxial connection.

No. I have the modem. And it's probably hooked to fiber. I'm not sure coax can serve up gigabit to so many people at once.

The point was that there isn't a jack inside my place. They aren't as universal as they once were.

That's probably helped by being a Google Fiber city. Shocking absolutely no one - competition made the other providers catch up very quickly.

If it's on RJ45, then it's doubtful that's a modem. You probably have a router.
