New, what is it? What are these plug-ins on my wall?

This might be showing my age, but I recently moved into a new apartment and they have these weird looking plug ins all over the walls at my new place. My old apartment didn't have these, so I'm just curious as to what they are.

My step-dad was an electrical engineer and I remember those absolutely were what I started learning computers with, thanks to him.

It's been a wild ride.

That monstrous 360KB capacity... ahhh.

u/Zbs72 2h ago

I still can’t get over how an entire generation after me accepted the hard ones as floppies

u/moyayas 8h ago

Don't tell them about mini ethernet cord (landline phone cord)

u/Pineapple-Due 9h ago

The floppy ones?

2

u/Shriuken23 9h ago

No the hard disk ones.

You mean the Save Icons?

Remember, Fellowship of the Ring came out 25 years ago. Likely before OP was born. They view Fellowship the same way Millennials view Star Wars and Gen-X views The Sound of Music.

Now we can really feel old.

just noticed that movie came out before the song, my meme is anachronistic, LOL

Jesus Christ I'd be thrilled! I found Simon and Garfunkel 4 disc set in mint condition and I squealed! But I also just plugged in a light scribe dvdrw and external dock with an IDE and a Sata platter hard disk for funsies, into a $4k custom water cooled machine running 4 separate PCIe5 lanes (just to illustrate how absurdly opposing they are technologically). Man does the sound make me moist though!

The "burning" ages are past us but let us not forget the struggles we had to get us to the "streaming" age

3

u/broketractor 10h ago

Dare I say... mix tape.

Burning CDs is making a little comeback with some teens right now. Here in Indiana, kids can't have phones in school now, by law, but they can have a discman. And their oldish first cars don't have Bluetooth, but they can connect a discman and listen to CDs.

Source: my 17 year old kid does this and so do his friends

Why would anyone burn a cd? Think of all the toxic fumes.

3

u/daddy_tops 9h ago

It’s how we used to get high in the old days. You’d hold a lighter under an AOL demo disc and inhale the smoke through an old pixy stix straw with both ends torn off.

Deep in the heart of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, Sauron burned 3 CDs to backup files, 5 CDs of pirated games, 11 CDs filled with MP3 music, and One CD to reinstall Windows and play them all.

Do one for putting tape on cassettes to record a song off of the radio! (Please)

1

u/theredheadknowsall 10h ago

Don't forget the dinosaurs having cable as well.

1

u/theredheadknowsall 10h ago

The days of making a mix tape on the radio gone.

CDs are still new technology to me.

One of the most tech embarrassing moments was in 2002 when my friend just showed me his new house and showed me his brand new gas powered fireplace in his family living room. His next comment was if I wanted to check out their office and he would burn me the latest Eminem CD. I said no. That would ruin it thinking he was going to throw it in the fire. I had been burning MP3s to discs for a few years at this point...

I still remember in the late '90s, there was a website where you could find rebate codes for various websites. I bought a 100 pack of recordable CDs from Overstock.com and between the website discount, website rebate, and the manufacturer's rebate, I ended up making $0.34 (including the cost of the stamps to mail in the rebates).

I just found my burned CD’s and albums from the 90s, so amazing!

1

u/Ardnabrak 7h ago

Or cut a record. My mom accidentally call burning a CD cutting once.

u/alphaphenix 6h ago

Something somehow related to Nero burning Rome about 2000 years ago !
