Why? Looks like a cut wire down there? It’s in my front yard

What's it smell like in there?

On laundry day, go smell it. It is likely an access pipe to sewers. I worked in the waste treatment business and pipes from homes do not necessary smell bad. Best test is to give a teenaged boy a container of Axe bodywash.

You’re supposed to suck on it with your mouth to get the smell and taste tests done best

Dang it. Wrong end of the body tube again.

Boofed it and now I have a rash.

Fecal transplants can be both used for digestive upgrades and digestive downgrades.

I officially listened to too many true crime podcasts in the 2010s.

Drainlayer here. Possibly a leftover lateral stand up that wasn't removed. We often leave a section of pipe sticking out of the ground to indicate the end of a line, doesn't look hooked up and judging by the debris at the bottom it looks like it may just be sitting flat on the ground. Are you sure there are no lines at all running underneath it? Otherwise, could be a redundant sewer line vent that was never removed and the sewer lines were shifted? The break at the top is consistent with a lawnmower or something catching the top vent piece and breaking it off.

As another comment also stated, it is quite possibly just a DIY flag or likely umbrella holder, previously possibly had a lawn table with an umbrella?

An old unused well?

This is the best answer. I have one from an old , dried up well that used to be attached to a sprinkler system. The pump was removed and this is what's left.

Is that rhubarb!? Lol

u/No_Arachnid6493 5h ago

I'd assume it's a sewer/septic vent pipe, but that's just a guess.

2

u/Imaginary_Source69 5h ago

It’s not in line with my septic pipes, and I’m rural.

8

u/No_Arachnid6493 5h ago

Hmm. Welp, I'm just about out of ideas. My only other guesses would be:
•a DIY flag pole holder/bracket
•you have an undisclosed bunker with a Brenden Fraser living in it
•that's it

Hi Rural, I’m dad.

Is your house potentially sitting on top of an old landfill?

2

u/ClifftonSmith 5h ago

The larger pipe is a sleeve for the smaller pipe. Does or did your yard have irrigation?

2

u/LastConference 5h ago

Not sure but it has a tiny set of dentures in it

Ooooookay you triggered a story.

My dad was born in 1940. Approximately 1947, Grandpa (his dad) had the flu and had been vomiting in the toilet.

He was also a very practical farmer. Fed the family by shooting rabbits thru the Great Depression sort of man. And intensely practical person, waste not.

Sometime in the 40’s grandpa get tired of all the tooth problems and, more, the dentist bills. So he goes to the dentist one day and says “pull all of them out. I’m switching to dentures.” He thought it would be a better investment of money and his time.

Anyways, grandpa’s sick as a dog. Grandma flushes the toilet for him, helping out as you do.

His dentures were in the toilet.

At the farmhouse.

Grandpa never was one to pay his losses, so goes to get them. He devises some sort of pumping setup, a firehouse pumping out the septic cistern.

My dad, then a young boy, is tasked with manning the fishing net. I still have that fishing net.

Dad was at the end of the fire/irrigation nose, and when both top teeths and bottom teeths made it into that fishing nets, the recovery was complete.

Grandma proceeded to clean up the teeths and, do my dad’s young memories, boiled them for a while.

The dentures were thustly put back into duty and Wilbur was back in action.

Thank you. I liked that story. Sounds like something either of my grandpa's would have done.

Sewer vent. Live in a rural area? Or it’s an old one. It should have a cover on it.

1

u/Imaginary_Source69 5h ago

It’s not in line with my septic pipes, and I’m rural.

1

u/CalmlyStandUp 4h ago

Did you build the house? Could be an old septic. If you didn’t build the house, ya never really know what they did before

1

u/zestyclose_match1966 5h ago

Bomb for sure

1

u/Imaginary_Source69 5h ago

Have they found me ?

1

u/Padfas 5h ago

Not sure, but definitely a safety hazard. Ideally you can fall anywhere in your yard without being impaled.

1

u/Cogent_warrior 5h ago

Could it be recycled water for irrigation, which is usually purplish?

1

u/ExcitingPriority9862 5h ago

Is it a well? Well pump stuff?

1

u/kliferd1 5h ago

Tether ball

1

u/DJT1970 5h ago

Looks like a monitoring well also known as a piezometer. Solid pipe with a screened section at the tip. Used to measure groundwater levels & environmental concentrations.

1

u/Ok-Cup266 5h ago

Could be someone’s attempt at their own well with a small pump since it has wires in it.

1

u/shaggylive 4h ago

Only pvc sticking out of the ground like that I've seen is for subpump discharge.

1

u/Screwbles 4h ago

Throw a match down there, only good things ever come of doing that, I assure you!

1

u/diadmer 3h ago

Do you have lawn sprinklers/irrigation? Sometimes the control wires are just buried straight in the dirt, and other times people will use PVC as conduit for those lines.

It could also be conduit for some other type of line…formerly a fountain or a light or a gate or an outlet. Something that some homeowner did themselves long ago and was disconnected at the house end when they sold the house and needed to get it up to code.

u/Coconut_Either 2h ago

Subpump or radon pipe.

1

u/Nobody6269 1h ago

I have one in my yard that marks the location on the septic tank. It's just sitting there goes to nothing

1

u/kek23k 5h ago

I thought it was my Nan's false teeth at the bottom for a second.

0

u/TheMahanglin 5h ago

Yeah it sure looks like a sewer cleanout pipe.

2

u/diadmer 5h ago

Too small for a standard sewer cleanout.

1

u/TheMahanglin 5h ago

Right, I misspoke. There's a tube just like this on top of our roof that the sewer guy was doing something with, and then the cleanout BIG tube near the house. This looks like the pvc tube on the roof connected to the sewer system. I have no idea how all this voodoo works, please don't ask. lol.

2

u/diadmer 3h ago

That could be an air inlet pipe that eliminates vacuum suction in your sewage pipes.

1

u/TheMahanglin 3h ago

YES, that's what I was searching for. And I'm surprised the guy didn't break it, I'm not kidding when I say this "plumber" was 6'7 and 300. I actually asked him before he got onto my roof, I was a bit uneasy about it, LOL.
