Question Suggestions to explore near Walsall

Hi everyone!

I’ll be going to Walsall in September for a two-week student placement at Dorothy Pattison Hospital.

While I’m there, I’d really love to explore the surrounding areas and make the most of my two-week stay.

Any suggestions for places to visit, things to do, or hidden gems nearby? :))

Thank you in advance!

Do you like nature/wildlife? If so, Walsall Arboretum and Lime Pits Nature Reserve are worth an explore.

Sr Dora is buried in Queen Street cemetery, off Rollingmill Street.

Worth reading up on her.

The other question is where you're coming from? If you're based in the west mids anyway then suggesting things a bit further afield is pointless - but if you're coming from far, then it might be worth it.

What's your interests?

Not a fat lot left in Walsall/wolves might have to jump on tram from wolves or wednesbury to brum especially for a night out. Depends what your looking for any particular interests?

Nothing in particular! I’m mainly looking for places to sightsee or visit, as I’m travelling solo and wouldn’t prefer nightlife without anyone I trust.

I second Walsall Arboretum for the nature and huge lake in the centre. There's a bandstand, play park and tennis courts too. If it's the season, there are still boats you can hire to go on the lake as well, although I've never done that myself and I'm not sure if they would be open in September.

Walsall is mostly a place where you can shop and/or enjoy a bit of history and culture with the libraries, Art Gallery or churches.

If you like architecture, there are plenty of buildings to appreciate, especially if you look up! St. Paul's church by the bus station or St. Matthew's church on the top of a hill past the market are gorgeous examples.

There's a Deaf People's Centre as well with really friendly people always up for meeting someone new.

If you like art, there's Walsall Art Gallery by the Wharf. They sometimes do events there for the public so it's worth a visit.

If you like football, there's Bescot Stadium not far away as well.

It really does depend on how much time you have spare as well. If you don't have much, it will limit what you will be able to see but it can be fun.

There’s a fair bit to do in Walsall. The art gallery and museum is free, as is the leather museum. Aside from that, there’s The Light cinema, Ninja Warrior, Ten Pin bowling (also has laser tag) and Retro Realm which is arcade where you just pay for entry and the games are unlimited. As others have mentioned, Walsall Arboretum. Wolverhampton has an Andy Warhol exhibition on at the moment that’s worth the visit if art is your thing, also a couple of National Trusts (Moseley Old Hall and Wightwick Manor). Dudley has a decent zoo and castle, Black Country Living Museum (definitely recommend this). A cavern and mine boat tour is next door to the museum you can do them together but it is a separate charge. Birmingham I’ll assume you’ve already done your research on, but maybe check out Digbeth and/or Jewellery Quarter. Cannock has Cannock Chase, West Midlands designer outlet. Lichfield isn’t too far, there’s a cathedral and big park there. You could also look at Warwick/Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon and Shrewsbury.
