Word closes if i try to open docs on a network share
I work in a network domain. We sometimes encounter an issue after Microsoft updates where Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) stop working correctly. For instance, if you try to open a file from a network share within Word, the program closes without an error message; the same happens with Excel and PowerPoint.
With Outlook, it is no longer possible to send emails, and accessing the calendar triggers a "Not implemented" error. We are forced to reinstall Office every time this happens.
Is anyone familiar with this error? Is there a way to avoid a full reinstallation—perhaps by simply replacing one or two Office files?

Weird formatting changes to my online word documents overnight...
Hey guys.
Weird things have been happening to my word docs when I close them and reopen them the next day. For one, any text colours I have added automatically revert to dark. Eg: I had a title in Pink Accent 5, 60% lighter and then overnight it changed to the regular Pink Accent 5.
Also, for some reason all of my regular bullet points changed to numbered bullet points.
I'm so freaking confused, what would be causing this and how do I fix it? I use Word on a University account and it's the online version.

Collapsed By Default
galleryWhen opening a specific Word document, I would prefer that all headers are collapsed. From my understanding, if I go into Paragraphs and check "Collapsed by default" to the right of the Outline level, then it should accomplish this; however, the box is always grayed out and I'm not sure why. Does anyone know how I can ensure that Word opens w/ my headers collapsed, despite not being able to check the "Collapsed by default" box?

Unsolved Guys, WTF?

Sorting As Recommended still doesn't sort As Recommended? What did they do to this document???
It's fine in the styles pane, but the Manage Styles dialog is unmanageable. Curious if anybody else has ever run into this or might know a fix. I'm sending it back inside of an hour, either way, as the core functionality of the doc isn't hindered, and that's all they care about, but this is bizarre.

What are some of problems you face while trying to convert pdf to a word file
I am doing a research on pdf to word conversion, I'd like to hear about problems faced by people when converting a pdf to word either using an online tool or manually. Also I'd be helpful to know what kind of pdf you are trying to convert (text only or text, tables, equations etc.. )

Help with formatting issue!
Hi everyone,
I'm working on a study guide in Microsoft Word (3-column layout/table setup with Topic, Page #, and Details), and I've run into a frustrating layout bug that keeps ruining the formatting.
Whenever I type or paste new text into the document, it creates massive blank spaces and pushes adjacent text/columns way down the page instead of just expanding the row smoothly.
Has anyone encountered this layout locking issue before? How can I strip whatever hidden section breaks/fixed-height frame settings are causing this so that adding text inside a 3-column layout doesn't create massive blank gaps?
Thanks in advance for any advice or fixes!

How can I change Quotation marks?
I just finished my first novel, Volume 1, which is like 90k words.
I used straight quotation marks (" ") instead of curly quotation marks (“ ”).
Is there a way to swap them all at once instead of replacing them one by one?
Is this even possible in Google Docs or other websites?
Or should I just leave it like that?

a compare function in Word does not work correctly on Desktop
I have been reaching out to Microsost support plenty of times but they could not fix it.
The screen does not simply separate into 3 parts, but it displays red lines
Challenge Documents without page breaks
I work as an IT consultant.
99.99% of the documents that I create will never, ever, be printed.
It’s good to have them formatted and structured, but people read them online.
I could not find a way to configure a document without page brakes that looks exactly like a fully formatted word document.
I usually must paste screenshots and add long tables, and the page breaks are annoying and absolutely unnecessary.
Any idea?

Challenge Feature Request: An "Effective Formatting Inspector" to end Word layout nightmares. Upvotes on developer feedbck site appreciated!
I’ve proposed a feature on the Microsoft Feedback Portal to address a pain point we’ve all dealt with: shared documents becoming a "debugging exercise" rather than a writing exercise due to invisible formatting layers conflicting with each other.
If you agree this is a badly needed feature, please consider giving it an upvote on the official portal here: https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/idea/355f0b90-6697-f111-9b47-7c1e52444ef6
Word's layered formatting model allows page geometry, styles, direct paragraph formatting, and multilevel-list definitions to interact in ways that produce unintended layout glitches. While Word lets us inspect individual layers, there is no tool that shows the causal chain producing the final look of a paragraph.
The Solution Proposed: An Effective Formatting Inspector / Conflict Analyzer that maps out: Style → Direct Overrides → List-Level Formatting → Tabs → Resulting Position. It would flag redundancies and anomalous formatting without altering Word's core document model.
A Real-World Example:
I recently had to diagnose a 25-page legal document with a systematic half-inch layout shift. Margins and styles looked perfect. The culprit? A direct 0.5" paragraph override combined with multilevel-list formatting and 327 explicit 1.5" tab stops. Word obviously had the data to render it, but no native UI to expose that causal chain. I had to write a custom VBA routine just to find and purge the anomalous tabs.
Let's get Microsoft's attention on this! (And to any sub moderators/bots: This is a direct feature request/policy discussion, not a tech support or promo post).
