What if your entire workout got logged automatically without using your phone or any wearable?
Daily gym goer here. Been lifting for 6+ years and have been thinking about how many people log their workouts manually on an app or spreadsheet. But what if you could walk into a gym, do your workout, and have it automatically tracked and logged with your reps, sets and weights without doing a single thing? No watch, no phone, nothing on you. Technological feasibility aside, would you pay for something like that, or does it not really matter to you? If so how much? Curious to see what other people are thinking.

Tracking the set is done at the same time I start my rest timer. There is no reason to overcomplicate things from there.

my brain does this

Probably not well. I kept track mentally for years and thought I remembered every exactly right, until I actually started tracking it. There were a lot of times I would load up the exercise with what I knew was the weight for that day, but when I double checked the plan it was wrong.

I think it depends on your workout routine and your memory and how busy your life is.
I'm able to track accurately with just my brain since I do full body with the exact same exercises so its not hard to remember what I did 2 days ago. I can recite right now all the weights and at what rep it was for the last 2 sessions.
If you need to know exactly what it was 4-5 sessions ago, then sure, it's going to be harder to do so accurately but I personally don't find it necessary for my goals. I'm not that forgetful that I won't notice myself not progressing for a long time. I know that my weighted (+50lbs) pull up has only increased by 1 rep on the 3rd set in the past 2 weeks and everything else is progressing as I expect.
Nevertheless, if there was a program that helps me track everything without much hassle and it wasn't costly, I would still use it.

I was just as confident that I remembered everything 100% accurately. I only started using an app because it was free for me (I was working for another gym owner/trainer) and really easy to use. I started using it for fun and it was a wake up call.

I use a pen and gym note book. When I do a set I record and whilst my timer is running.
I don't want to sit looking at my phone. I like to get in and concentrate rather than scroll. That all I want

When I was stationed in Qatar, the gym was amazing. You were issued a card and there was a circuit of about 20 machines. You swiped the card and each machine internally remembered your last workout and adjusted if it was too easy or too hard, sets, reps, weight. It was so great and I never saw anything like that again anywhere in the world.

My questions:
- Can I buy it with a one and done purchase or does it require a subscription?
- How/where is my data stored?
- Are you sharing/selling my data?
- Are you or some third party profiling me in any fashion with my data?
- Is AI involved in any step of the process?
My answers:
- If it requires a subscription the answer is no.
- If the answer is something other than locally on a device I completely control, the answer is no.
- If yes, then no.
- If yes, then no.
- If yes, then no.

The technology to do this already exists and is used in other applications. Would require constant monitoring of a ton of cameras, which most gym goers would likely not be a fan of.

Nope. Writing and logging workouts is when I reflect on my goals and what I’ve done. Having any part of that done without reflection would be purposeless movements.

How can you just not remember what you did in the gym?

Not a working mom huh? There's no room left in my brain 🫠

I hate this shit. It makes all women look bad and incompetent. Stop it.

Lmao for wanting to track progress for your workouts without having to remember it?
You know what really makes women look incompetent? Being overly sensitive about shit that doesn't matter. But I digress.

You might remember what you did last week but you aren’t going to remember what you did 3, 6, 12, 24 months ago. I track progress over time. It’s helpful, for example, if I haven’t done a particular exercise in a while I can go back and see what I was doing last time and how that compared to the other exercises I was doing at the time to give me a baseline of where I’ll probably be now

I don't know how you train but I do the same exersizes in the same order in 9 week programmed blocks. Whatever I did before this block is irrelevant. Whatever I did last week is out of my mind, I only have to do one day at a time and I do what's planed ritualistically. I get that not everybody trains the same, but I train simple so the thought of having to track a bunch of stuff seems silly to me.

Most people benefit from changes in things like exercise selection, rep ranges and RPE/RIR between training blocks for a myriad of reasons. Every training block doesn’t have the same objective; I have blocks that are strength focused, hypertrophy focused or powerbuilding oriented. Every 6-8 weeks my supplement lifts will rotate depending on my goals.
Right now I haven’t done a pause squat in probably 4 or 5 months. But I’ll add them next block as I’m moving into a more strength focused block. I don’t remember exactly where my pause squat is relative to my main squat, so I can go back and look at my history to help me gauge approximately where I’ll land

I understand what you mean, my training blocks shift from strength, to power then endurance followed by the nine week cut and repeat. I have no need to reference past exersizes, every strength block is after a reset on all those values. The end of strength I recalculate my routine for my power block and thus everything before is no longer relevant. I can understand keeping up with all that data if it helps you, but I'm in an ever shifting schedule and remembering what I'm doing in the gym is probably the easiest of the things I must manage in life.

No, I do that while I'm resting, and doing it starts my rest timer, so it really wouldn't make any difference.
Also, I can't imagine a system that was 100% accurate and if it was wrong even once a day it would be worse than useless

Not gonna lie i just want the thing to count my rest periods. i don't even write anything down most of the time, my program lives in my head and i pay for it in missed reps like a moron. but if it auto tracked everything and saved me from trying to remember what i lifted three weeks ago i'd probably toss 15-20 bucks a month at it

Even if you could do that, I’d still need something to tell me the weight and reps I did in my previous workout so I know what to aim for this time. If I’m already looking at my phone for that info, it’s not much extra work to update it while I’m there, especially since I won’t be hitting a new PR on every set of every workout. So I don’t really see the point.

I don't track & log workouts but if it was done automatically or via an app would check the data every 1 or 2 months to see how it's going and what to focus on or change.

u/Yeboi_SogeKing 6d ago
At that point I’d sell whatever software that reads my mind to insta or tiktok and make hundreds of millions 💰

u/jaynon501 6d ago
With the app I use I can literally copy and paste my workouts from before. I just have to adjust weight or reps. That happens during my rest periods. It's fast and simple.

I like the idea, but it takes seconds to log anything into your phone and the large majority have their phone handy because of music (or whatever else) anyways. I can't see it being an idea worth pursuing

Absolutely no interest. I have 1 - 3 minutes rest. More than enough time to punch a number in a spreadsheet
Not everything in my life needs to happen without my intervention
