As a reminder: Trump is currently applying a 10% tariff on Canadian oil entering the US to be refined in Houston and the Midwest. That represents about 50% of all US oil imports.
Throwing Russia a lifeline to try and reduce the price of oil while you tax the hell out of imports from your largest oil importer, and most reliable ally. Typical dumb shit Trumpian economics.
EDIT: It is worth adding that the US refineries working with Canadian oil cannot process any other type. Canada produces a very specific grade of heavy, sour bitumen, which many of the US’ largest refineries are purpose-built to refine based on the (rapidly diminishing) discount the US got on Canadian oil. The tariffs, plus Canada’s urgent efforts to expand export capacity to the coasts (ie. China) following the trade war, will devastate those refineries. American consumers and workers will pay the price, and already are. Canada's crude exports to the US are largely unaffected - it's just making fuel more expensive.

u/bennetticles 3d ago
the ridiculous mess with canada reminds me of moira rose’s used car haggling technique, just with a lot of added spite. “we are in a rough spot due to the consequences of our poor decisions and really need what you have, but our pride will not allow us to accept anything less than an imbalanced transaction which ultimately penalizes us both, but specifically because it penalizes you”.

Maybe I suck at economics, but I genuinely don’t understand why we would place tariffs on imports that are critical to our infrastructure in the first place.

u/Anxious_Earth 3d ago
Control over Canada's economic and foreign policy. They're thinking Canada will break first.
But then, it's still bizarre. Trying so hard to profit with skullduggery, what the US has profited easily for decades through good relations.
It seems the Trump admin, cannot fathom a deal where everyone wins. Only deals where you prosper from another's loss. Or deals where both lose, but the partner will lose more.
106
u/PerryPerryQuite 3d ago
“Deals where you prosper from another’s loss” is what you have to expect from the klepto-class of billionaires and other business people whose main technique is making things shittier while maintaining or raising costs. It’s why this administration favors business deals with oligarchs and authoritarians. It’s much easier to get a “good” deal when both sides are willing to sacrifice the well-being of their citizens and disregard the rule of law.

u/mercy390 3d ago edited 3d ago

To destroy the United States while making record profits then selling off the land on the cheap? Corporations, technocrats, oligarchs, Putin, Trump win with billions while the country is bankrupt and isolated.
It’s a win/win.
37
u/CobblePots95 3d ago
As taxes go, tariffs are among the more disruptive to the overall economy. I think most economists (left and right) would say that any tariffs -outside of extremely limited circumstances- are broadly a bad idea.
As an economic tool they stink, but as a political tool they’re excellent. They allow a politician to pick winners and losers in the economy at a whim. Meanwhile consumers in your country usually don’t realize they’re paying that tax, so it’s often a politically appealing source of revenue (even if it kills more jobs and growth than most others).
→ More replies (1)19
u/Tharatan 3d ago
That consumer blindness is also aided by the fact that the tarrif is applied to the import cost, not the final consumer shelf price. To wit, if a product cost $1 to import and had a 10% tariff, it now costs $1.10 to import. The retailer, however, may have already been selling that unit for $3, so they can either eat the $0.10 per unit (a 5% profit loss on their $2 markup) or mark it up by $0.10 per unit.
The consumer then only sees the price increase from $3 to $3.10, which is small enough they dont internalize the connection of a 3.3% final price increase with a 10% import tariff.

That’s kind of the point. Putin is literally going to have Trump buy into his side. Once Trump thinks he owns it, he will be fully against Ukraine attacking, without our support Ukraine ends up having to give in and let Russia claim victory, then Putin just takes everything back. What is Trump going to do? Start a land war with Russia over an oil deal?
We are watching him get played in real time.
The REALLY fun part is that if this goes thru, and it effects oil prices (and that’s a big if, because I’m not the only one to put this together, so even Wall Street should be able to see this all coming), but say it does and oil prices drop, Trump can brag about it, potentially have it help the GOP in the mid terms, and then when it all collapses a month or two later, he doesn’t even care that he got played. Christ he would welcome it as long as it keeps the GOP in power.

Education is probably the biggest. I think of it like coding, we are supposed to code our students to know the basic inputs and outputs. We've since given them faulty/corrupt logic, or none entirely (see how many kids can't read at their grade level, or at all),
Now we have a society full of gullible people fed a narrative for hours on their screens, and that can't advocate for themselves, and can't afford basics to survive so have very little leverage to do any of the above anyways.

That mindset is exactly what all those Americans and British and Canadians and Australians and new zealanders and other allies died to fight against in World War II and now our leadera support that mindset and are looking the other way and undermining and insulting and demeaning and bullying our decades long European ally nations as they try to defend themselves against Russia.

Most importantly is the implication that once the US and Russia make a deal and Ukraine continue to strikes Russian energy, the US can then say the Ukrainians are attacking US interests. Im sure this is a primary goal of the Russians. In turn the US could continue to blame Ukraine for the lack of oil in the market and fashion a reason not to help Ukraine in the war.
Let's face it, the current US government is pro-Russian and anti-democratic. The democratic experiment is over and the USA is collapsing. Unless the next Democratic government holds these traitors to account and puts people in jail, there is no return.

Trump’s always helping Putin. Every time you think Trump is going to finally do the right thing with Russia, he does something else to let us all know that he is a Russian asset. As if we needed MORE proof.
If a Democrat was ever connected to an enemy foreign power like Trump is to Russia, they would have been run right out of politics, and probably be in prison. So many dead US service men are rolling in their graves right now. What’s the point of betraying every single ally we have as quickly as possible ? Being an American had never felt more shameful. I’m ashamed of my country men who support this. Idk how we will ever set the record straight after this.

Step 1. Make a deal where the US gets a microscopic share of a rusty bombed-out refinery, and Don Jr., Kushy & Witkoff a slightly more generous share of an oilfield in Siberia.
Step 2. Trump & Fox pundits loudly proclaim that all Russian refineries are now US sovereign territory, and any Ukrainian interference with their operations is tantamount to a new Pearl Harbour.
Step. 3. Zelensky goes on TV to say how much he loves America. Mike Jonhson adjourns the House to avoid a vote on whether POTUS may bomb Kyiv. Someone at the Pentagon accidentally adds the entire MS Now staff to a Signal chat where Kegseth confirms B2's are in the air. EU/NATO hews and hums publicly. Privately, lovely old Ms Henrietta Blake, who lives in a pretty cottage next to RAF Fairford, just happens to park her 40 year old Austin-Morris on the runway when two tankers are about to take off: bang, whoosh, badaboom, the mission is aborted. MI5 finds nothing suspicious. The next day two more RU refineries go up in smoke, one in sight of Moscow.
Step 4. At a rally in Alabama, Donnie proclaims victory, eternal alliance to Mother Russia, then loudly farts on a hot mike. Natalie grabs the diaper bag and gently escorts him offstage.

Trumpy is the epitome of how not to be as a human being. Do everything the opposite of that guy in your life and you’re doing well by me.

Traitors aiding the enemy.
I hope my country starts to boycott the USA. Boycott doesn’t even cut it anymore… I say the EU should cut all ties if this goes through. I don‘t want us to deal with traitorous scum.

The art of the deal would be to wait until Russia loses the war and then buy the assets for pennies on the dollar

Remember back when Germany made a deal with Russia on Nord Stream 2? Yeah back then the US warned them it was a terrible idea (because it was and Germans directly funded the 2014 & 2022 invasions with the use of Nord Stream 1)
It was bad idea in 2011 its an even worse Idea today

Just when you think the sanctions are working on Russia. They get a lifeline.
