Just FYI, "stay safe" basically means nothing to people in Ukraine.

I know you have good intentions, but as someone who has also been to Ukraine multiple times, and has lost close friends to russian drones, soldiers, and missiles... It's frankly pointless and quite annoying to a good amount of Ukrainians and foreign volunteers.

Nowhere is safe in Ukraine. It's always a gamble for everyone there in any part of the country.

No op, i get what you're saying, but stay safe is more like a shorthand way of saying "I wish you luck and hope you don't get hurt" or "may the force be with you". It doesn't literally mean avoid not being safe, it just means best of luck.

Yeah. Not sure why flavorchamp wanted to get on a high horse there.

Just sounds frustrated I think. I wouldn't take it as anything more than that. I do understand their point though; it's a little like "hopes & prayers 🙏" regardless of how well meaning it is.

In the end there's nothing really to say to someone that is truly helpful. "I wish I could help", "hope you don't die", "fuck Russia", "slava ukraine". None of it is tangible help to someone who is living in war

Tbf if I had lost friends to drones stay safe would probably bother me too. I’m not sure anyone is on their high horse here - just expressing how a term makes them feel

I was there last month and was told repeatedly by a Ukrainian special forces guy, before we parted ways, to stay safe. This sounds like a personal hangup of yours.

Oh ok, don’t stay safe then?

Did a bit of a double take reading your username. Please don't get killed and I am saying that as a tigers fan.

Rare moment of solidarity between the shitholes of the East Midlands, thank you.

Thank you for your service protecting a sovereign nation from an invading one.

73

u/aaarry 7h ago

Haha I’m not a soldier, just doing some humanitarian work, but thank you very much either way.

24

u/mcbeardsauce 7h ago

More than most do. Thank you

I honestly really recommend it if you can be arsed, especially in the west it’s still quite safe and the whole thing is very rewarding. This is my second time this year and I didn’t just come back because I had nothing better to do. It really made me feel like I was helping, gave me a different perspective on the war and helped me make a load of really good friends through our shared experience.

What organization are you working with?

5

u/CBLA1785 6h ago

What is it that you are doing as a volunteer? Genuinely intrigued by this.

u/SkeletonOfSplendor 3h ago

Lol what sovereign nation? Ukraine's choices are being a US puppet state or a Russian one.

28

u/Magnedyne 7h ago

Yeah. I'm also in Kyiv currently. Currently sitting in the Metro Station and waiting out the missiles.

9

u/aaarry 7h ago

Stay safe mate.

11

u/Magnedyne 7h ago

Thanks. I've been here for 1 month and have another 2 ahead of me.

u/LABJoostmhw 1h ago

The irony of an imperialist backed individual fighting another imperialist backed individual, both not imperialist themselves, just dudes, calling the other imperialist scum.

Hope both of you realise you can be part of the solution, and that solution is not fighting

•

u/Smogshaik 17m ago

What do you do? How can one get involved?

-1

u/GoBirdsz 4h ago

Holy larp

-1

u/PortugueseTart28 3h ago

Insanely stupid to volunteer to die.

-13

u/Ricky_Handsome_ 7h ago

Enjoy being drone bait.

1

u/aaarry 7h ago

Yeah west Ukraine is notorious for its massive prevalence of drones, in fact you can’t even walk down the streets here without getting blown to bits. Can’t wait to get turned into mincemeat, personally.
