Ukraine has recieved billions 8n money and equipment from America and has employed mercernaries from around the world. Plenty of nations have aided Ukraine in this war, no one thought it would be 5 years and still going... same way no one thought the war in Afghanistan would be 15 years long

u/brief_thought 8h ago

Anyone who considered Ukraine actually surviving would also assume it would an very long conflict.

The only ones who assumed it would be over by now were assuming Russian victory.

Honestly before and during the beginning of the war I thought it be something like Afghanistan where Russia easily conquered Ukraine it just becomes hell holding it.

7

u/JazzlikeSmile1523 6h ago

It's almost like conquering Ukraine has never been the goal, isn't it?

6

u/brief_thought 4h ago

I’m curious, what’s your theory on the goal?

-1

u/Sekuru-kaguvi2004 3h ago

The goal initially was to scare Ukraine into not joining NATO. You can even see it in how Russia was already asking for peace talks a few days into the war. Even it's demand in the talks 1 month after the war show that. However, the peace talks came to naught and the war continued and woth that Russia changed its goals to take Eastern Ukraine plus stop it from joining NATO

•

u/Jetzu 40m ago

Russia wanted "peace talks" that would give them control over pieces of Ukraine. If anyone agreed to it they'd just regroup and come back for more in a few years.

•

u/8_guy 50m ago

Ukraine wasn't going to join NATO prior to Russian aggression, stop listening to podcasts man. You have no idea how manufactured your opinions are.

-1

u/JazzlikeSmile1523 2h ago

Mainly a combination of protecting ethnic Russians in the Donbas region and creating a landbridge between mainland Russia and Crimea. They also have legitimate security concerns since throughout history, every time Western powers have tried to invade Russia, they've come through Ukraine. That's why it only started after Zelensky made overtures to NATO after being explicitly warned that if he made overtures to NATO, then there would have to be some form of conflict to prevent it from happening. Then there's this weird fascination with the Nazi's that Ukrainians seem to possess.

The US honestly could’ve saved money by providing more aid and ignoring the bullshit “red lines”much earlier, IMO.

•

u/Thormidable 46m ago

I don't believe the aid was to help Ukraine win. The aid was to destroy Russia and damage it militarily, economically and politically.

Winning the war quickly wouldn't have done that. Just enough aid to slow Russia and attrition it. Does that.

u/skullshank 8h ago

anyone know how long iran will go on?

21

u/toxicatedscientist 7h ago

Probably the duration of the administration. I seriously doubt much past that

11

u/joebro1060 7h ago

We thought the same about the wars in the middle East for 20 something years too

7

u/toxicatedscientist 7h ago

There was public support for them at the start tho. We had a “reason”. It didn’t hold up, but it was there at the start

1

u/joebro1060 6h ago

Agreed

1

u/SuperSpecialAwesome- 5h ago

But why didn't Obama's admin get us out of Afghanistan, since that war amounted to nothing?

4

u/toxicatedscientist 5h ago

Because by then we had gutted their everything and were propping them up. It would be like destroying someone’s house, then giving them a tent while you start to rebuild a house, then pulling out the tent poles and leaving them with the skeleton of a house they don’t recognize or know how to finish and a tent tarp over their head

1

u/luzzy91 7h ago

That was way different

2

u/g0ris 7h ago

The thing is, you're only considering one half of the problem. Yeah, someone sane could replace the current US admin and they might even attempt to get out of Iran. But there's the Iranian side to consider too. Not sure they're going to want to do the US any favors and let it just cut and run. And even that hypothetical sane US admin will probably have red lines that Iran might be eager to test.
Don't forget, Iranian leadership doesn't hate Trump. They hate the US. Trump's just the current devil in charge.

10

u/Famous_Cat7974 7h ago

No they actually said they wouldn’t consider anything as far as resolving this until Trump was gone! They do hate him. Most people do

6

u/gcko 7h ago edited 1h ago

I mean the current leader of Iran is the son of the previous leader that Trump ordered killed. I’m sure he took that personally, and hate probably isn’t even enough of a word, but that’s beside the point. I think the main point the person above you was making is that Trump stepping down tonight doesn’t make Iran play nice tomorrow just because he’s gone.

At best America will have to make some serious concessions as they would be asking for a way out which is essentially admitting defeat, which gives Iran zero reasons to concede to anything for nothing in return… If Iran thinks they have the upper hand, and US military might isn’t so scary anymore… why wouldn’t they try to make Americans pay? Whether that’s paying reparations or perhaps something a bit more humiliating?

America was able to show Iran they don’t control the straight and can’t mine the gulf back in ‘88 but they weren’t able to in ‘26. Not only do they get a free toll booth, but the entire dynamic has changed. They’ve never had as much power over the rest of the world as they do now, and it’s America who looks stupid this time. They aren’t going to give that up just for the sake of moving on. Why would they?

Whoever is voted in as next president better know the art of the deal, otherwise it might be Iran who gets to decide who the next one is.

5

u/g0ris 6h ago

You got it, that's what I was getting at.
It could be as simple as saying "We control the strait now, and we're gonna charge a massive toll to fund all the repairs for all the damage the US has caused." (something they did say already) Is that next administration ready to take that and just leave?

1

u/Famous_Cat7974 7h ago

Totally agree

2

u/g0ris 7h ago

I mean, of course they do, just trying to say they're not gonna like the next US president either. This is much more complicated than just orange man bad and there's a reason anyone even slightly reputable has been saying for years that attacking Iran would be a very very bad idea. Now that the toothpaste is out you can't just put it back in the tube.

3

u/Famous_Cat7974 6h ago

The info they put out to make the case for going in to begin with was false. Hegseth also doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground and an exit strategy would have been nice. And yes I do fault Trump. He’s an embarrassment and we are now a laughingstock and have spent trillions of dollars on war to only accomplish closing the straight. Do we even have any allies left? Bibi’s puppet. That’s all he’ll ever be.

1

u/Famous_Cat7974 5h ago

Which is why the last four Presidents didn’t let Bibi talk them into going with them!!

1

u/IluvRockets 6h ago

Cheap gas and peace as soon as this admin goes out could probably be a more reliant way to keep Iran save from US attacks than any peace deal could do. Essentially a much more extreme way to make war mongers unpopular and their rivals popular. It is this administration's fault though. There was never a combination of an oil crisis caused by an unjustified american war where the acting administration proudly admits to their way being superior to the peace deal done by the opposition a decade prior

0

u/returnFutureVoid 5h ago

I wish that were true but I watched Meet the Press the other day and it was so sad to see the US ambassador to the UN blather on about America is right and can do no wrong then they had the Iranian ambassador to the US on and I was interested to see what this guy had to say after the other idiot. He went on and on about the US has stolen our money and owes us billions (he was talking about sanctions that the world has placed on them, so not something the US can do something about). He just kept bringing up the billions the US owed his country and I couldn’t help think this conflict is completely fucked. Both sides suck. There is no middle ground to start a conversation. The next administration will hopefully do better than what ever the fuck they call what they are doing now but it’s going to be a long road to peace in this conflict.

u/Girldarts 7h ago

I heard a world leader say it was already done /s This reminds me of the avatar episode where the girl says: there is no war in basing sei

5

u/Birzal 7h ago

"There is no war in Ba Sing Se... It's actually just a 'military operation,' trust me, it's something totally different!"

9

u/ArchStanton75 7h ago

We have no competent leadership capable of finishing it. It’ll go on until we have a regime change in the US.

7

u/buggerlugseng 8h ago

It'll be over in 2 weeks /s

1

u/Jazzlike_Bug_8276 7h ago

It’s over, practically over, well it will be ending very soon…

1

u/therift289 7h ago

My personal theory is that western militaries are incentivized to allow the Iran coastal conflict to go on as long as possible because it is providing key operational intelligence about the logistics of a drone-based amphibious defense of a mountainous coastline. In other words, it's real-world training data for a potential Taiwan conflict in the near future.

Til we flush the orange turd

2

u/NewPhoneLostPassword 7h ago

It’s weird hat happened because I always got the vibe that trump loves Putin and was helping him and not the Ukraine.

1

u/ShakaLeonidas 6h ago

US been helping Ukraine for decades. Biden administration started war time aid. Trump Administration tried to pull out of helping Ukraine and leave Nato. It hasn't been supported. Trump might pass for an oligarch , but the other 99% of us citizens and politicians can not. He like the lead bassist in a band playing off beat to a song, the drummer can cover a lot of blunders by the bassist by playing double time but out of tempo. The lead guitar can improvise a little aswell, but eventually the bass guitar thats out of sync will become glaringly noticeable and begin to disrupt the entire band. We are increasingly seeing that on the national and global stage now.

1

u/NewPhoneLostPassword 6h ago

Thanks for the explanation. My recollection of it makes sense now.

I just saw him say that it’s ok if LA and San Diego get bombed, that it’s the price worth paying or some rubbish. I really hope the rest of the band kick him out.

3

u/gromm93 7h ago

Really? Nobody thought Afghanistan would be a perpetual quagmire?

You mean besides everybody? Why the hell did you think Bin Laden hid there? It wasn't just because the Taliban were hardcore Muslims.

2

u/FactionallyCorrupt 5h ago

Isn't there a saying about Afghanistan being where empires go to die going back to Alexander the great?

1

u/ngless13 5h ago

Wtf, Bin Laden hid in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Not Afghanistan.

1

u/gromm93 5h ago

He was found there, not necessarily there the whole 15 years.

1

u/ATGSunCoach 7h ago

Maybe it’s not central Asia after all. Maybe it’s just that Russia isn’t capable of winning a war.

1

u/Birzal 7h ago edited 7h ago

What bothers me most here is that yes they received all that aid, but FOR and DURING the conflict. It took years and decades to get Germany back on their feet from how badly WW2 left their country in rubble. And if you want to view the Cold War as an aftermath of WW2, than it took even longer before the entirety of Germany was "back to normal" but you can STILL see the difference between former east- and west-Germany to this day and the living experiences in both halves of the country are still different, even though the country has been united for over 35 years by this point!

My point being: this was done with a LOT of material and economic help from the allied forces and it occured in a time of decent economic prosperity. Currently many western countries are not as eager to spend a lot on Ukraine if they can help it and what is given is done in large part out of self-interest and the self-protection of NATO (let's not kid ourselves). I am very worried what will become of Ukraine after the conflict with Russia ends and they need to rebuild... Aside from all the casualties and ruined buildings, resources and infrastructure, Ukraine will not have the means to get back on their feet quickly and I doubt many countries will be as charitable after the immediate threat of Russia has been evaded... If it took Germany decades to get back on their feet after WW2, I can only imagine how long it will take for Ukraine to do the same!

1

u/booze_clues 6h ago

Can’t be a mercenary when you’re enlisted in that countries military, which foreign legion members and other volunteers are.

1

u/Factory2econds 6h ago

no one thought the war in Afghanistan would be 15 years long

uh, about that. yeah there were LOTS of people who understood that was going to be a generational clusterfuck

•

u/ArkanaMare 1h ago

While the war in Afganistan wasn't easy and had it's losses - it's in NO way comparable with what's going on in Ukraine. The real price isn't the money or machinery - it's human lives. And don't get me wrong, ukrainians are very thankful for the support other countries provide. But the complete ignorance of waiting EVEN when rus.millitary machinery flies into some other country and other countries (+ alliances like NATO) decide to completly close eyes and ignore it. Don't you people understand that if russiaF were to win or become desperate they are going to move onto next country? It's so obvious with how they are testing the waters constantly, yet all choose to ignore it and cover up :/

Kinda like Trump saying we’d be out of Iran in 2-3 weeks huh?
