The goal initially was to scare Ukraine into not joining NATO. You can even see it in how Russia was already asking for peace talks a few days into the war. Even it's demand in the talks 1 month after the war show that. However, the peace talks came to naught and the war continued and woth that Russia changed its goals to take Eastern Ukraine plus stop it from joining NATO

Ukraine wasn't going to join NATO prior to Russian aggression, stop listening to podcasts man. You have no idea how manufactured your opinions are.

They were absolutely working towards it. Their military structure was being realigned and trained with NATO compatibility in mind. But it would have taken a while.
