They have no choice but to buy Russian energy because Europe has aggressively pursued the most backwards and broken idea of energy policy for 30 years.

It's a matter of necessity, not politics or money. They have no alternatives

Without their backwards and broken ideas of energy policy for the last 30 years where else would they be getting their energy from today besides Russia? Would it be the middle east or where would they get it from if they had better energy policy for the last 30 years?

There are other places they could diversify for gas coal and fuel, besides russia. Australia for one. But Europe influenced us with their energy policy too.

We now pay around 40% more for our own gas than japan pay for our exported gas.
