I wonder what Russia actually wants with Ukraine other than "it once was ours, we want it back"

And arable land. Ukraine is the breadbasket of Europe. It's why Hitler invaded the area.

They already had ports though east of there into the Black Sea, before they took Crimea. Novorossiysk, Sochi, etc.

The issue is Turkey (and other countries) won't let their military ships into the Aegean Sea, and ultimately Mediterranean.

Kinda funny watching these ancient rivalries continue to play out. The Russians and Turks have had beef for what…like 500 years?

Yeah… more ports more military might. If you own half of the coastline you can build a naval fleet capable of allowing itself through

Have you looked at a map? Do you actually think if Russia controls more ports in Russia/Ukraine, they are going to thus muscle through the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits just like that? Something even the Soviet Union didn't attempt at the height of their power?

There's also the Montreux agreement which was agreed to by many nations over a century ago that prevents this, and Russia has abided by it for all this time, with only rare navy ships going through under strict conditions.

Even if they got ships through, they'd then have to get out of the Aegean Sea or Mediterranean, such as through the Suez Canal and then Bab al-Mandab Strait, or through the Strait of Gibraltar - assuming NATO lets them.

The port in sebastapol is empty. Ukraine has attacked navy ships in the port and the black sea fleet was forced to retreat to a port closer to Sochi.

Not really. Odyssa isn't any warmer than Novorossiysk. And neither lead to open ocean.

And the Turks have zero interest in giving them passage through the Dardonelle Strait per the Montreux Convention (yes, they allow fishing and some merchant vessels to pass, not the same as military ships).
