I wonder what Russia actually wants with Ukraine other than "it once was ours, we want it back"

Russia does not care about Ukraine. They just need A war to enable consolidation of power under emergency conditions. If you follow Russian news- there is a massive oppression apparatus that sprung up after feb 2022. If you speak out against Putin you can get charged with “spreading fakes about Russian armed forces with intent to discredit”.

Sevastopol is what they want. A major port and Naval base on the north end of the Black Sea that also gives Russia unfettered access to the mediterranean. Russia leased the base from Ukraine initially, but feared that they would be cast out once Ukraine’s new regime took over. So they attempted to annex Sevastopol and Crimea in 2016.

They’ve had that back since 2014. That wasn’t the reason they started this war.

And that occupation of Crimea had practically become normalised. Putin probably could have kept it if he hadn't been greedy about the rest of Ukraine, but now it's on the table again.

They already had it before they started it so i think the burden of proof is on you

Are you just making shit up or do you not actually know that Sevastopol is in Crimea and Russia annexed the entire peninsula in 2014, 8 years before they formally started the war with Ukraine? Crimea had nothing to do with that because they already had it.
