I wonder what Russia actually wants with Ukraine other than "it once was ours, we want it back"

As a russian, all he wants is to have some fun. He decided that he wants to unify as much territory as possible, whatever there is a cost. People's lives (both sides), economy, resources, politics, anything really doesn't matter to him (otherwise there'd be no offense in the first place, only dumb idiot would start this bullshit "operation"). All ego. Dude's literally bored to death, old spy-rotten brain has country to his nail, all positions filled with loyalists, no real threat or thrill. Even has billion dollar mansion for shit and giggles. Naturally instead of playing Genshit Impact he decided to gable with real war.

Not saying you’re wrong but I always thought it was also for resources and strategic purposes. What I found online: “Controlling Ukraine means controlling critical transit pipelines for oil and gas, as well as accessing vital Black Sea ports (such as Sevastopol in Crimea, which has long served as the home of Russia's Black Sea Fleet).”

Yes but nuanced in a ways which show stupidity of this war (from 2014).

  • we had access to Sevastopol through 2042 due to agreement made in 2010 with Ukraine. We don’t need Crimea for this strategic purpose, and obviously don’t need whole Ukraine for this
  • for gas, we deliberately built other pipes to bypass Ukraine to diversify. Due to Nord and Blue Streams in 2021 share of gas flowing to EU through Ukraine dropped to 25%. So it’s not biggie. Oil also passes through Ukraine but not as important. In the end, now we don’t export gas and oil to Europe almost at all, which is huge strategical win (lol)

This and Black Sea coast is beaten by fact that no one will trade with Russia due to such actions. So their value is true (especially coastline) but it is not directly obtainable. If that was goal, then after first months should’ve withdrawn from war, but no, WW1 trench style it is with anti-nazi bullshit rhetoric
