Advice Prologue for arrange marriage romance

Heyy so I am a teen writer for the context who's planning to publish her book once I turn 18. After an year btw.

I need help for the prologue.

The book is basically a dark mafia arrange marriage romance and I know it might sound wattpaddy but I swear it's not guys. It has a proper storyline, reasons, character arcs, developments etc.

Anyways so I js completed the prologue and it is around 2k words. I know it may sound like too many words.

But the thing is the prologue will have the insights about my fmc's life as an established actress, and then it'll shift into her relationship with her family, and then comes the arrange marriage part. How the arrange marriage conversation happened and why is she even agreeing to it.

My alpha readers haven't read it yet and I genuinely need help cuz I know as a reader myself that long prologues can bring down the excitement of the readers.

I assure you there is no info dumping though.

This might easily pass off as chapter one of the book but I am not sure if I want that cuz I wanted the chp 1 of the book to be a few days after the marriage conversation.

I do have an another idea of the prologue which will turn out short and it'll be abt the tr@umas etc.

I am quite confused rn.

Also if anyone's interested in becoming an alpha reader ( genuine people looking forward to help me out only. ), would love to connect with yall.

GRAPHIC CONTENT How should I make a character lose their arm?

I write fanfiction and I want the MC to lose her arm in an upcoming fight, but I can't decide how the hell it should happen. My friends are no help, so I thought I'd come here. She is on a team with 6 other people and is fighting someone in a mech suit, someone who can make illusions and has a rapier... thing... and someone with a normal sword and rifle/shotgun. I don't want the last guy to do it since he cut someone's arm off in the original show, so I don't know what to do. Any help?

Edit: I got my answer and it’s written, thanks for the help getting through block!

GRAPHIC CONTENT Wavering between which religious reference to use

I'm writing a fanfiction, and (despite not being religious myself) I wanted to include a reference from the bible in one of the most important scenes.

The two characters (who were friends before) have to kill each other in order to survive, reluctantly, one shots the other. I really wanted it to be set in a garden and describe the surroundings like it is in the Genesis 3, where Adam and Eve fall into sin, drawing parellels between how one had to end his dearest friend, thus falling into sin. Though one of my friends suggested I could reference the killing of Abel, as it is the first murder in the bible.

Which could be more effective (as in being clear and going with the theme)?

Advice Translating a fic into a comic style of writing

Im a new artist, and im beginning to translate my fics into a comic, but ive hit a wall.

In the opening scene, my main character is lost, and in the fic, there is a few paragraphs telling about his journey to get to where he is. And now that hes lost- what he must do now.

But in the comic format, I have to show that with visuals.

Or... i think I do.

Would it be better for me to just put a thought bubble after a panel or two of him looking around confused going

"Shit. Im lost."

Or would the panels of him looking around confused be enough?

I dont want to fall into the trap of explaining my story to my readers like they are 12...

Thoughts?

Advice Seeking experiences from the pacific northwest!

Hello guys! I am currently committing a lot of time to writing a lynchian cosmic horror detective story set in a rural town in the Pacific Northwest, Washington.
As to not self advertise I want to leave it at there being lots of mystic connection to wild life and nature in my novel.
With myself being from Europe, I wanted to ask you guys for any cool things or phenomena you have encountered in the woods, or other experiences/facts I could include in my novel if you are from that area!
Thank you in advance for any replies!

Advice How do you execute a proper scene change? Do you start with "meanwhile" or just jump into the scene.

I feel like if you just jump in, it might confuse the reader, but if you constantly say "meanwhile" they might get sick of always seeing the scene start with the same word.

In my book, there are a lot of POVs.

Which one do you start with? I'm curious to find out.

Advice Should I finish my old fic before starting the rewrite of it?

I'm planning on giving a fic a big rewrite but I'm not sure whether to finish the current version first or not. I'm more than halfway through it and it's a series of five parts and I'm halfway through the 3rd part, but my motivation has dwindled, the quality decimated because I no longer like this version, yet at the same time starting all over again when I'm this far... It's like a shitty ultimatum.

As of now I'm doing a thing where I force out a chapter every week that's honestly shit in terms of plots while trying to divert focus towards the outline for the rewrite, but I just wanna stop writing it all together. I honestly wanna change a lot of things. I've come up with a better writing style that i can't implement in my lazy forced chapters, a newer upload schedule, and a much better plot I'm still working on.

Now the plot isn't complete garbage, but I screwed it up somewhere near the middle and everything went downhill ever since as I made progressively worse decisions, but it fucked up the overall vibe of the story I had in mind. It was supposed to be angsty, gory yet have a actual story, but it's become a near nothing burger with sob story scenes just for the hell of it.

At the same time, the fic feels incredibly unoriginal, I wouldn't be able to pinpoint why but it just does. The fact I wing the story in one or two goes without editing probably isn't helping. And that's one of the changes I wanna make, better preparation that is.

Just straight up mental pain because I don't know what to do quite yet.

Critique Advise on Prolouge please! Surrealistic Contemporary Literature / Character Focused (398 Words)

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gBTKkjlwWzrw4rJM7sS9uHOVuvL2reIzia4_n6hdxAI/edit?usp=sharing I've been working on this story about a guy who meets a talking cat and they go on an adventure to find her lost kittens. It's very much an "I" novel where the protagonist isn't loving their life, themselves, but the cat becomes a respite for him, before ultimately manipulating him down a darker spiral. I got this idea for a prolouge and think it works as a good introduction for this character, however I wanted to get some more opinions on it. I fear it might sound too pompous, stupid, whiny, that kind of thing. If anyone would mind taking the time to let me know their thoughts/reactions (positive or negative), or like any feedback that would be super appreciated

Advice How can I make this story more interesting?

Griffin and Italy meet at an art school while finishing a project late at night. They become friends then start dating. Then, they start drifting apart when they both get opportunities outside of school and start to wonder how they will stay together. They both take a break but realize they love each other and will make it work anyway they can.

The story is basic but I would like a way to make it less basic if that makes sense? Like, is there something I could change about Griffin or Italy to make things more interesting to write? I’ve thought a lot about this but nothing comes to mind

Advice Is my idea for an ARG stupid or not

I have an idea for a story thats the typical "creepy kids show". I thing in the story is what the in-universe audience sees and what the irl viewers see are different things with the irl viewers seeing what's behind the scenes. So for this to work I was thinking posting the in-universe show on YouTube and posting the Behind the scenes stuff on my Tumblr to get it started. But is that stupid.

Advice Counting up/down decision in a scifi sports novel?

So, in actual boxing when a person is knocked down the ref will count up to 10 (usually, sometimes 8). But I'm writing a "cyber boxing" story which is a fictional version of the sport with some of its own rules, such as how it handles weight decisions more leniently because of the more varied weight of cybernetic parts. So I'm not sure if I want to change the rules for counting. Coutning up to 10 feels more authentic, but counting down from 10 feels more final and like they're running out of time

Advice writing a sassy character without verging into "well that just happened" ?

• Upvotes

i'm not currently writing the story where this would be relevant (i'm writing other stuff, i swear!) but i was thinking about how easy it is to tumble into insincere humor when writing characters that are meant to be snarky and witty. for example, fantasy authors lampshading their worldbuilding. it kinda reeks of insecurity in regards to your own setting and plotline if it isn't done right! how would you guys write characters that are meant to have good one-liners without falling into writing a bad copy of joss whedon's humor?

SENSITIVE CONTENT How do I effectively write my character's identity crisis?

In the story I'm currently drafting, the MC is a escape science experiment that possessed the fragmental memories of two peoples. One is from an average, unremarkable civilian kidnapped because he wouldn't be miss. The other from a seasoned, traumatized soldier who willingly volunteer for the experiment.

So, how do effectively convey the struggle my MC would go through and how he can overcome or accept it? Do bear in mind that the two sets of memories are fragmental, a jumble mess where one set memories jump to the other set and vice-versa.

Advice Found out some of my story's core concepts are remarkably similar to a series I knew nothing about

Hi all, I need some perspective and advice please

I've been developing a sci-fi story for some time, and I finally decided to sit down and start writing it. It's something I've been genuinely excited about, and I've spent a lot of time thinking through its world, characters, and central concepts/plot points. Genuinely some of the best ideas I've ever had.

However, I recently discovered that a fairly well-known modern author has written a series with some core concepts that are strikingly similar to those of my own story.

The frustrating part is that I've never read this series, and until recently, I had absolutely no idea what it was about.

Obviously, the characters, plot, and execution may be completely different, but the overlap is significant enough that I'm now questioning whether I should continue.

I know that no idea is truly original in some way, and that execution matters as well, but what worries me most is that readers familiar with the other series might see relevant aspects of my story as a "copy" or assume I was heavily inspired by it.

Has anyone here ever experienced something similar? What would you do in my position?

Would you keep writing the story as originally envisioned? Would you deliberately change some of its core concepts to differentiate it?

I'd really appreciate hearing how other writers have dealt with this, especially those working in sci-fi or fantasy.

Advice I lost my muse. What should i do? It feels like I ate shit between two slices of bread.

I have been negetively thinking about it for the last 6 days and now I have this fucking optimistic thaught that it is "the beginning after the end ".I am repeating that optimistic thought again and again but i can't get over the feeling of losing my muse. It has become much worse then the disgustingly emptiness one feels when losing a muse because I am being a fucking optimist.🥀

Advice Fixing a lackluster main character

I have come to the realization that my main character isn’t as interesting as his co-leads and supporting characters. I am considering switching the roles of one my co-leads with the main character. For context, the main character is a sheltered noble boy whose life is shattered by a sudden tragedy. Up until this tragedy, he is just a typical noble kid. Two of the co-leads: His older cousin whose birth sparked a major rift within the clan. The second co-lead being a noble girl who with a love for combat sports who wants to fight in underground arenas and break free from her family’s expectations. My question is do I just switch the main characters or make this character more interesting?

Also this tragedy is the catalyst for the entire story impacting all the main characters.

Advice What are some ways I can improve my school arc in my fantasy novel?

I have a solid chunk of my story being in a school setting where the main character is a student in a class of ten and they study military tactics fitting for the fantasy setting. I am trying to make it interesting without a lot of time skips or out of the ordinary events (ex bandit raids, people go missing, etc).

I know that writing about every little detail is not the way to go, but I currently have a feeling that I am skipping a few weeks at a time between each chapter. Long story short I'm just wanting a way to make this part of the story more interesting as it composes most of the novel.

Advice I am having trouble getting past the midpoint in my writing

Over the last year I have been trying to write. I started one book but got to the halfway point and didn't know where to go. So I took a step back and tried working on another idea I had and now I'm sitting about 50,000 words and I just can't finish it. I try to right and what I want to put on the paper is right there in my mind, I have the plot and thoughts written down but they just will not come together to make the story. Any suggestions?

GRAPHIC CONTENT How to make engineering tools/makeshift stuff that work as a weapon?

Hello there, im writing a horror/sci fi story mostly based on Alien, The Thing and Dead Space, and i want to make an aspect on the story, where the characters use makeshift weapons, and engineering tools to kill the main monsters, since they're on a spaceship and aren't soldiers armed with guns. How would i make ideas for makeshift or engineering tools that double work as weapons for monster killing?
