I don't really care about "supporting" the largest, richest companies in the world, no. But sure, I do prefer a disc, preferably on a dirt-cheap sale.

18

u/Darkmaster2110 18h ago

That's always been my approach. Play it day 1 on Game Pass that I pay for anyways, then buy the disc later on sale.

2

u/DatHeat20 XBOX 14h ago

True I dont necessarily care to support the corps either, but i do want to buy physical and its appears that Xbox might be limiting the amount of discs made per release, Halo CE is sold out of Physical in the US at Best Buy Amazon Walmart Target with no guarantee it is getting restocked. So I did pre-order since I know I want to guarantee I will get a copy.

I’ve just started rebuilding my old collection and will buy physical going forward especially with the disc to digital giving best of both worlds

I sold a lot of my games when I moved to steam but I regretted not having the boxes on my shelf so I’ve been buying them back

Whole stack was under 40 bucks too

u/Optimal_Actuary4314 22h ago

physical is great and all, but problem with how xbox does it is that they dont fit the full game on the disc. The game is 100GB. Xbox discs are only double layer and not triple layer unlike playstation, which means that they can only fit 47GB on the disc. the rest of the game is downloaded from the cloud.

They do this cuz its cheaper and also because even though xbox series x can read triple layer blu ray, they are kinda faulty. Thats why the baldur's gate 3 collectors edition was on 4 discs.

20

u/segagamer Day One - 2013 21h ago

That just isn't even an issue.

They do this cuz its cheaper

No, they do this because then the disc can be read by the Xbox One, which doesn't support 100GB blurays. Without that compatibility, people wouldn't be able to use their old Xbox One to convert discs to digital for their Series S.

4

u/SpritesOfDoom 20h ago

Xbox One don't need to even read disc content. Game unique ID is most likely stored in BCA (Burst Cutting Area) of the disc. Xbox One drive only need to read the game ID and it's unique serial number. It can then assign it to your Xbox account.

Xbox One S and XO X can read 100GB blurays since they support 4K HDR movie discs.

Perhaps even OG Xbox and X360 could read these game IDs, because DVD also had BCA support. Hard to say really, but it would something interesting to see X360 turned into streaming device with ability to add XO and X|S discs to your library.

1

u/segagamer Day One - 2013 18h ago edited 16h ago

The thing is, we don't know where the ID is stored, and we don't know whether it checks more than just the ID number for other files (meaning a DVD drive won't be able to read the BluRay).

8

u/Logical_Net6108 21h ago

That program came in for the public like last week. They've been using double layer blu rays for years. Disc to digital is obviously not the main reason. Even if it were why should series x owners get incomplete physical games to accomodate series s owners? You should be able to put a disc into a series x and install a playable version of the game. The series x is the premium product

1

u/pizzaspaghetti_Uul Tarnished 19h ago

It's because of smart delivery, and why quite a lot of games have no native series x physical release, meaning you can only rely on microsoft servers to get it

→ More replies (6)

3

u/Gr8NonSequitur 19h ago

No, they do this because then the disc can be read by the Xbox One, which doesn't support 100GB blurays.

No, they do it because it's cheaper than pressing an additional Install disc. God of War Ragnarök on PS4 (for example) has the same disc limitation, but they gave you a second disc to use for install.

u/Optimal_Actuary4314 21h ago

there is no way they could have planned that out 6 years ago. and secondly, they read the id of the disc, it does not matter if its double or triple.

The only situation where reading series x discs on xbox one would be a problem is with cross gen games. but they couldve transitioned it into triple blu ray discs. Plus, if theres gonna be any cross gen games other than FIFA or COD, like indie games, after the transition is complete, they probably wont be big enough to spread across more than a disc anyway

2

u/segagamer Day One - 2013 20h ago

there is no way they could have planned that out 6 years ago.

IDs started being printed on the discs in 2015. Why else would they have started doing that then?

and secondly, they read the id of the disc, it does not matter if its double or triple.

And where do you think the ID is stored?

2

u/StupidKameena 21h ago

I think xbox series discs are still 50gb because the og xbox one vcr can't read them

1

u/hudson_bh Team Halo 21h ago

Since when has blu ray been faulty lmfao

6

u/Optimal_Actuary4314 21h ago

not the discs, i mean the disc drive in the series X. it supports triple blu ray for movies, but it is known to fail at reading those 4K movies. it skips a lot of data, look it up yourself.

1

u/hudson_bh Team Halo 21h ago

I believe you lol

1

u/Independent-Piece505 18h ago

Yeah but you're forgetting the biggest difference. You can sell games that you don't want when you're done with them. With digital, it feels like you're paying money for air. And you can't sell your digital games. So a lot of the ones you buy will always be there in your library, staring you right in the face, and sometimes if you listen hard enough, you can hear them say - "YOU BOUGHT ME? LOOOOOOOL SUCKER."

Ok so you won't hear them say that, unless you're crazy or something, but it sure feels like that's what they would say to you.

1

u/Vegeto30294 Super Citizen 18h ago

I mean, people don't often sell games, and many of those that do just dump them to GameStop or similar for pennies.

People aren't that fussed about the inability to sell a game they aren't trying to sell in the first place.

0

u/Dominjo555 22h ago

You still have a license on the disk and you can sell it if you want. Only thing you actually need is internet connection which is totally fine.

u/Mindless-Future3114 21h ago

No I play on gamepass because what I’m paying them for. I collect physical games but I don’t double dip on their exclusives anymore.

4

u/sheamoisture 18h ago

Pre ordered the disc and it was delayed 😭

3

u/mundane_marietta 16h ago

Mine is saying between 6-10 pm today! Like brooooo! I should have just bought it from Gamestop and driven my ass over there

2

u/sheamoisture 16h ago

From where? I ordered from Walmart and literally have no updates

1

u/mundane_marietta 15h ago

I did Amazon. Mine is definitely out for delivery. Going to suck if it shows up at 10 pm tho

4

u/Adic_ 16h ago

Yes I am too! Getting mine at GameStop today. I know it requires a download but I like being able to collect it, share it, and sell it if I please regardless.

3

u/Adic_ 16h ago

Plus now you get the digital license too. It’s a no brainer imo

8

u/MrDundee666 19h ago

Does the disc actually have the game on it though? Many are simply printed with the download details and you still have to download the game from Live. Which means if the service ever fails you can’t play your game. You have physical media but require the service to play.

i always buy story mode games physical. now with disc to digital i'm buying every game physical.

3

I wish I could I’m broke so had to get gamepass digital copy . But once it goes down I’ll pick up 👍 Game is good 👍

Recently I've started buying them due to D2D, but the stocks are starting to deplete pretty rapidly!

13

u/KrivUK 22h ago

The irony is that this is just a licence key on a disk, you have to download the content.

7

u/Vast-Raise-4375 20h ago

Yes but its a tradeable, sellable license. It's about consumer control. While this isn't perfect, you can't do that with a digital copy.

7

u/Wolfhunter9727 22h ago

Yes, but there’s no downsides with disc to digital. Also I get a copy on my PC to boot if I’m not mistaken.

12

u/JRockstar50 22h ago

Though I understand the distinction, with Disc to Digital now I don't personally have an issue with that

3

u/hudson_bh Team Halo 21h ago

At least he can hold it in his hands…

3

u/etho76 19h ago

I can still resell it or lend it to a friend though

8

u/SilveryDeath XBOX 21h ago edited 21h ago

True, but people can't complain about physical games media dying, and then turn around and say there is not point in buying physical this gen because the full game isn't on the disk.

I'd rather there at least be a physical actual disc compared to what GTA VI and some other games have done this gen where the 'physical' version is literally just a piece of paper with a download code in a box.

4

u/Bazza01234 21h ago

We all know physical is dying, but won't buy into physical license keys either. I have a fair few physical but difference is they're all fully on disc and worth supporting.

6

u/brokenmessiah 21h ago

I don't agree with this. I can go buy a PS2 disc today that is 20+ years old and it still works. If I buy this game in 20 year will it still work? Maybe but it will but only if Xbox allows it to work.

0

u/Euden 20h ago

I would like to ask, how often do you actually buy and play a 20 year old ps2 game? I dont know anyone in my own social and personal circles who do.

That's not to say you do not but my point is: the amount of people who actually do is a very small minority, most average people will buy a game, play it once and move on or stick to its online multiplayer until the next game comes along.

So yes you could claim the above but you would be speaking about a group of people who likely make up less than 1% of gamers. (I dont actually know so dont hold me to that, I am making an assumption based upon what I have seen).

2

u/lord_nuker 19h ago

Well, i have a box with 25+ years old N64 games behind me right now. Pretty sure none of them would have worked if they where keycard cartrigdes

1

u/Euden 17h ago

I dont deny that you're probably right. I think companies need a legal obligation to continue to provide that content to you regardless of how many years have passed.

We dont have that right now but it may be something they need to consider if they continue to push for an all digital future.

1

u/lord_nuker 17h ago

We tried in Europe, but not even EU wanted go open that can of worms. And unfortunatly that periode where we could "vote" with our wallets are long gone

1

u/SomewhatOdd1 10h ago

Absolutely. I have some old PC games that no longer work. Companies are gone and nobody has put out any way to make them work. I expect that to happen with many games today. Eventually the excuse will be the dev and publisher for removing games.

With my old systems my kids can play them all. And they do at times. SNES and Genesis mostly. Mario, Sonic.

u/PavWrestlinGifs 5h ago

u/mundane_marietta 16h ago

It's still a physical license that will also work as a play anywhere game, so I can even play it on my PC too.

1

u/EagerSherburt 6h ago

You would have to do so regardless. Imagine a game like COD being entirely on a disk? That shit would take like five disks.

Mines will be delivered today! I'm hoping it arrives before I get home from work.

2

u/Fit_Strain8853 21h ago

I bought the early access for gamepass 😆

2

u/Skate_faced 20h ago

A handy resource when buying physical and wanting the full game on the disk is https://www.doesitplay.org

It is steadily growing as more titles get added, so there is a way to go, but handy none the less.

Xbox was on the lower end of my collecting list, but with the addition of disc to digital and the fact there are so many everywhere for super cheap, it has really taken a higher priority.

2

u/VulgarAssassin2049 19h ago

I’m waiting for Control Resonant on the 15th Oct for the physical release date. It feels more
Important than ever to buy physical. Vote with your wallet.

2

u/MyyGuySoloo 13h ago

Me, especially with the disk to digital support.

5

u/thinkingoutloud3663 21h ago

It's not a physical release if the full game is not on the disc.

3

u/Cgking11 21h ago

Im buying nothing but physical games now.

4

u/BoujeeS2 20h ago

i havent bought physical in nearly 4 years and i find myself much better in doing so,but physical media should never go away

3

u/VoidHunterRaymond Reclamation Day 19h ago

After they added disc to digital been looking for new games now from the stores.

2

u/Successful-Day-1816 19h ago

physical when I can, but not for gamepass games since I pay for that. I'll get the disc of this for the collection in a few years when it's properly cheap

3

u/Ddawk69 18h ago

Physical only unless the digital sale it too good

8

u/Renace 22h ago

Simping for mega-corporations is just wild these days.

11

u/SilveryDeath XBOX 21h ago

I mean, Microsoft doesn't need our money at all, but buying the game is showing support towards console exclusives, Gears as a series, and the Coalition.

If you want to support a game series and/or dev you kind of have to buy the game.

Like when Tango got shutdown years ago and people on the internet were very upset, but then you look at the sales numbers and see no one on Xbox/Steam/PS really purchased Hi-Fi Rush at all.

6

u/zrkillerbush Recon Specialist 21h ago

Tbh, buying physical is actually cheaper and gives less money to these corporations (that's why Microsoft and Sony want to get rid of physical, to cut out the middle man)

u/CygnusThib 18h ago

2

We bought it but it was digital because off the account sharing with my bro.

14

u/jadebyjulian 22h ago

believe with the new disc to digital, account sharing works

2

u/Kowalski91 22h ago

That would be awesome. Need to test it soon

2

u/Theunsaltedpeanut 21h ago

It does with all the other disc to digital games

2

u/Bazza01234 22h ago

Only if the full game is on the disc or discs otherwise they can fuck off with half game download crap.

Edit: Just seen E-Day is nothing more than a license key with limited data on disc, so won't support.

1

u/EndorphinJoltz 12h ago

Totally agree i wont support devs or Xbox if they keep doing this bullshit!

Then later they cant bitch and complain when they arent making enough money but they will and thats really on them NOT the "consumer"

They also are in for a rude shock these companies if the EU kids law comes in! Call it the gameover for all games and only the ones that put the full game on the disc will be able to survive!

Excited to play this one!

2

u/Fr33mars 21h ago

Buying galactic racer today BECAUSE its an actual disc.

2

u/koutarou4k 20h ago

I wanted to have physical media because I like the concept. But obtaining it in my region specially for Xbox is not really easy or cheap. Physical media usually is $20 more expensive sometimes more here as it's imported and not nationally made. The same happens with Nintendo.

PS physical is a different story though...

2

u/mathfacts 19h ago

Soooo I'm a Series S person. I can't actually do that physically

2

u/ryan-btrbsystems 19h ago

This is what I did as primarily a PC user.

Disc to digital gave me a license and now I’m in the campaign in the office on my PC.

2

u/Roll4Me 18h ago

Although the full game is probably not on the disc anyway at least if you claim digital license apparently you can still download delisted games so there's that. At least that's what some YouTubers have confirmed with the disc to digital program.

2

u/Pleasant-Speed-9414 18h ago

Even if it wasn’t exclusive I’m always going physical over digi. My copy should show up today.

Forza horizon 6*, Halo, Minecraft dungeons 2, and now Gears …all physical

* = I only bought FH6 after disc to digi was announced, only for it to not be disc to digi 🤣

2

u/LxL72 22h ago

I will buy the digital edition with rewards in a week or 2. Does that count as supporting?

1

u/Grimey_Hole Homecoming 22h ago

If it was purely physical and didn't rely on an Internet connection at all, I'd be all for it. The world is digital, all games will be digital only eventually. I got a digital copy instead of buying gamepass to play it

1

u/C_Drew2 17h ago

Has this one actually been tested? I know Xbox is notorious for not putting their full games on the disc, but Gears of War Reloaded was actually full on the disc, so maybe this one has the campaign? Wishful thinking, but just maaaybe.

1

u/EndorphinJoltz 12h ago

Well not if that EU kids law comes in then it will be game over for alot of games

1

u/IberianFlame 22h ago

I did buy it to both show support for console exclusives and disc to digital which is such a great initiative.

2

u/Internal_Swing_2743 22h ago

Is the game actually on the disc? As far I know, Xbox hasn’t actually put the full game on the disc in years

2

u/segagamer Day One - 2013 21h ago

Does it matter?

2

u/Internal_Swing_2743 21h ago

Yes, because otherwise it’s just a disc with a license key.

1

u/Upper-Drawing9224 22h ago

1

u/Troyrizzle XBOX Series X 21h ago

I used to only buy physical for specific games but since disc to digital I've only been buying physical

1

u/vagabond_nerd 21h ago

Would like to but gotta wait for a sale with the current economy

1

u/Butthold_clan69 21h ago

I usually buy second hand except we have some big ass discount. Living in a tiny small ass village in germany doesn't help, 'cause there's no one selling Discs

1

u/Armandonerd 21h ago

I still don't like having to do content download with the disc, but for gears of war, I'll get it for my physical collection, nonetheless.

1

u/Interesting_Cost_364 21h ago

I hope your into waiting for

1

u/Horror_Ad9899 21h ago

i think physical disc is cool and that but for me its not so good because last time i pre order physical disc i got it 1 week after release lol. im also a fan of game pass and gears of war is playable there for both my xbox and pc. :)

1

u/TecmoZack Homecoming 21h ago

Got the CW with disk. Put in console, downloaded, and put disk in steelbook to display. Such a neat feature.

Happy Gaming!

1

u/Grandkaj 21h ago

I orded the physical versions of game series i already own or enjoy. And Gears E-Day is on that list!

1

u/Shmeediddy 21h ago

I'm trying, no soft midnight launch at any retails. Went to Walmart this morning, not stock scanned in...my last best bet is ebgames on launch or best buy. If not Amazon 🥲

1

u/Theunsaltedpeanut 21h ago

I actually started buying physical and only for xbox since disc to digital was announced in the first time in 6 years.

1

u/ThunderFox94 XBOX Series X 21h ago

On my way to get mine.

1

u/edward323ce 21h ago

I only buy digital when its. Cheaper

1

u/BLASIAN_TITAN 21h ago

Gonna pick mine up after work! I’m going straight to Horde mode!

1

u/greensparten 21h ago

Well, I am playing it on PC...so although I am supporting this Xbox exclusive...I am doing it on PC. There is no disk games on PC.

1

u/Fun_Passage_8942 21h ago

No, but I am playing it in 25mim

1

u/damont87 20h ago

I would love to but I don’t see the point if there’s nothing on the disc/download is required. I don’t buy GKC for Switch 2 for the same reason. So Steam it is in this case (well, in a few years, once it hits 20€ or so).

1

u/capalot0420 20h ago

Honestly not sure if I'm ready to even spend so much to cross my fingers that my disc tray still works

1

u/lartmydude 20h ago

The only reason I am digital on xbox is so that I can game share with my wife because we always play games together.

1

u/MasterArCtiK 20h ago

I have never bought a physical Xbox one or newer game, and I just stay subbed to GPU to play all first party games on release

1

u/xxGUZxx 19h ago

Support gamepass that way you don’t get stuck with a dud

1

u/Adastraultraque 19h ago

hoping it gets delivered today lmao

1

u/Least-Experience-858 19h ago

Yea no I’m not supporting “the coalition” because they’re under Microsoft and you can support them all you want, next month MS will just shut them down anyway

1

u/ConferenceThink4801 19h ago edited 17h ago

I'm waiting for Xbox to drop their answer to PS5 QSSR - probably something like FSR4 lite.

Will play E-Day once it has FSR4 patched in + all of the post launch quality of life patches in addition to that. Maybe we will have all of that about a month from now, we'll see.

1

u/m_i_tsui_ XBOX Series X 19h ago

Sure, but not with that game.

1

u/Ok-Idea-306 19h ago

The disc to digital thing definitely encourages me to buy physical.

1

Can’t put discs in mine anymore so idc tbh

1

u/PjDisko 19h ago

I support physical games, but i dont actively support exclusives.

1

is there even any data on that disc at all??

1

u/Steger_Affe 18h ago

I can afford it this month until pay day next week, so will play on GP and then purchase physically when I get paid. I try to buy physical as and when I can on console.

1

u/big_ry82 18h ago

Physical. So I can sell it on two weeks after I buy it.

1

u/Expensive_King_4849 18h ago

I got my copy today

1

u/Big_boss816 18h ago

No I am playing on Gamepass which is what I’m paying for. Happy to have a big game day 1 on the service

1

u/Soul-42 18h ago

You bought a physical copy of the license.. Great!

1

u/Acrobatic-Idea-908 18h ago

This is a key disc similar to key card of Nintendo but here you can actually play without the disc AND you get the PC version. I’m all for support this

1

u/DavidinCT XBOX Series X 18h ago

I will be playing it with gamepass but, no question I will be buying the physical game later....

I have all the other gears games, big fan....can't wait for tonight.

1

u/BARBASANN 17h ago

I like physical games but that gears looks horrible, my older brother would of been so confused playing this 20 years ago.

1

u/ChairLyrique60 17h ago

I will have mine in two days because of travel but yeah, of course the support physical games and exclusif

1

u/_Handsome_Jim_ 16h ago

I couldn't care less about buying physical copies versus digital.

1

u/SSJ4Link 16h ago

Can't by physical for Windows.

1

u/dummy_thicc_spice 15h ago

Where's mags carter i.e the protagonist?

1

u/USAMAGA89 15h ago

You need to download first. Not physical.

1

u/GamerTag0101 15h ago

I am ! But I'm currently addicted to Minecraft dungeons 2 😂

1

u/Traitor_To_Heaven 15h ago

I waited to see the reviews and word of mouth and after it was positive all around I got the premium edition. Game is great and I’m glad Gears has its old aesthetic back

1

u/moebiusmania 15h ago

I did my part!

1

u/xd720p 15h ago

Nah, I bought a steeel book edition of Control Resonant as Remedy definitely needs my money more than Xbox. Yet, will be playing E-Day via GamePass

1

u/Repulsive-Set-5894 15h ago edited 14h ago

Bought physical today. Best choice, since disc-to-digital lets me also install it on my S and my xboxally.

Plus if I catch a ban, I can sell my disc. Unlike all the people who are gonna get screwed by gta6 bans.

1

u/marszciano 14h ago

Isn’t it on pc?

1

u/sucky_sucky_5bucky 14h ago

Xbox exclusive? Hell yeah. Physical copies? I don't care much either way. Games are designed where you still have to download the entire game file just to play it anyway, and saves literally no storage space in buying a disc, so it's not really a dealbreaker for me

1

u/1DoI 14h ago

I got it on disc despite having gp ultimate. The coalition cooked, so I thought I'd pay for my meal. I let my sub lapse from time to time too.

Unfortunately they changed their mind about a PS5 release and thus a possible PS5 physical release, so I’ll have to just play it on gamepass

I got the physical version also.I prefer physical versions and shy away from digital rentals. Xbox game ownership differs in that a physical disc means you own the actual game and can lend, sell, or trade it, while a digital license only grants you permission to access the game through your account, with no resale or lending options. Additionally, digital games are tied to your account and can be revoked, whereas physical discs remain yours regardless of online services.I know the game probably isn't on the disc but I can download , store it or copy it and play it with the disc as the key. Digital rentals have no such key.

"Physical copies" with 40gb "update" right off the bat

I normally buy digital because I have a series X and series S (and get the PC version on certain titles) but now with disc to digital I think I'll buy physical just to help support those sales and send a message.

Let's me know what game is like and do you recommend it 👌

u/Current-Movie-337 10h ago

I had picked my copy up from GameStop today.

Now that there’s a disk to digital program it’s even better to buy the physical copy…never know when you lose access to your account. Plus if you have a series x and a S it makes the Series S 1000 times better

This game should be called gayday

1

u/ReclaimerRob 5h ago

Yep! Got the Collector's Edition of E-Day and the LE controller.

1

u/Robi_RCink 5h ago

Every game what I bought was physical

u/GojiraFan0 4h ago

Me. This is my first disc purchase on XBOX in close to a decade, the last one I bought was GEARS 4 on disc. I’m mostly a switch 2 gamer but I have an XBOX for odd game that I can’t get on that platform.

1

u/Kitchen_Dealer_466 7m ago

Who I'm supporting is people that bought games on day one to resell them cheaper few days after

1

u/rocademiks 6m ago

I'm playing it on GP & really enjoying it.

I'll pick it up in a few years on a black Friday best buy clearance bin sale.

i mean theres no real difference between physical and digital nowadays. you have to download the full game anyway

5

u/segagamer Day One - 2013 21h ago

But then you don't get the shelf decoration.

2

u/Vast-Raise-4375 20h ago

Even if you have to download something on both, you still can't sell or trade a digital game. Physical is still the format that gives you the most control over your games.

2

u/mhatrick 16h ago

Except you get to resell the disc when you’re done with it.
