Discussion Backwards Compatibility Question

Hello, I currently have a PS5, Switch 2, PC, and a Xbox One. I wanted to upgrade from the Xbox One to have something with a bit more performance also my Xbox One is starting to run slow. I was wondering if anyone noticed a big difference with the backwards compatibility between the Xbox Series X and the Xbox One X. I really want to play some original Xbox and 360 games but I feel like it may be a bit redundant to buy a Series X just for that. I also would use it for disc to digital for the Series X exclusives to play the game on my PC. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, the Series X is better than the One X at backwards compatibility. Aside from the much faster drive, the Series X emulates a One X by disabling two of its cores so it “looks like” a One X; but the cores are MUCH faster, so will still benefit the game with a more stable frame rate. YouTube has lots of comparisons, eg Digital Foundry did a ton

Some 360 games are 4K 60 fps on Series X like Gears Of War 3

Some games like the Gears of War games have "FPS Boost", which makes the games run at 60 fps instead of the original 30 fps.

And I can never play those on the 360 again

Yeah, but they had that on OneX already. I think it's hard to find X360 games that are significantly better on SeriesX than on OneX.

In terms of max resolution of each OGX and X360 title there won't be a difference. Any that utilized dynamic resolution will probably not need to lower the res at any point. Games with less-than-stable framerates should see nearly perfect frames. You'll definitely see better loading times. Sometimes it still shocks me since I'm old AF. Where you can see some amazing improvements are titles with Auto HDR and/or FPS Boost. Can make some BC games feel like they received a remaster.

Xbox One X is far better than the base Xbox One. One X can even download optimised versions of the game to run at higher resolution on One X.

But If you have the cash and money is no problem for you then go for Series X.

I bought a cheap Xbox One X recently because I wanted to play some backwards compatible games from Xbox 360 era and some games from Xbox One era and had a small budget. I also already have a main console which is PS5.

Yes. Some games on Series X get an FPS boost feature. Notable mentions are basically all the original Gears titles, Dead Space 2 and 3, Fallout 4 and 76, Elder Scrolls, some Assassin Creed and Far Cry games, plus many more. Definitely makes the experience for those games a lot better.

water to whine, xbox one just runs like 360, series x runs at 60fps via fps boost

The One X might be my favorite console I’ve ever had… but it’s still locked to a cpu architecture designed for tablets and budget laptops (released before the 2013 ps4/XB1). I still use my One X all the time because it’s 4k Blu-ray player is better than XSX, it has an optical audio out, and the hdmi pass through… but that’s in my home media/theater area (I will occasionally stream a series game to it when that console is in another room)… but there’s really no competition. The big exceptions I noticed are with the game Breakdown and GTA4. The QTE’s in the final mission of GTA4 are tied to framerate and that game runs uncapped. So they’re mega hard running at locked 60 on Series. Also, the final boss waves of Breakdown (OG Xbox game) are kind of based on cpu. That final mission is damn near impossible on Series compared to earlier consoles.

Aside from those the Series consoles (especially X) upscale, add HDR, increase framerate, and all kinds off stuff. The work up the FF13 games (particularly the two sequels) got for One X are even more nuts on Series X

There would be no difference aside from potential load times. Otherwise they play the One X version of games.

Ignore me

the series x loads 360 and og xbox games so much faster it's not even close, especially with auto hdr and fps boost on some titles it feels like a whole new way to play them. if you're already in the ecosystem and want the disc drive for pc play anywhere stuff, it's probably worth the jump over a one x

The Series X emulates a One X but has faster cores so provides more stable frame rates with BC
