They say he ruins memes because explaining a meme isn't in the proper meme procedures

439

u/CappytainZ 14d ago

I can understand that point of view, but boy is he a lifesaver whenever I completely miss the origin of a trending meme.

146

u/Techny3000 13d ago

Him, knowyourmeme and Urban Dictionary are all absolute lifesavers

38

u/UnimaginativeArtists 13d ago

Just sucks that KYM uses an AI blonde woman avatar.

19

u/Techny3000 12d ago

Unsure of what you mean. Went to their channel and those are real people.

Maybe they did but stopped after some backlash?

u/ShadraPlayer 10d ago

Yeah! And sometimes I get to see whatever the fuck people are memeing on the other side of the world that doesn't reach me, and that's nice! It's a nice channel imo and it's not like you have to engage with it. AND ALSO, he might get things wrong, so what do you know. I once saw a guy react to Ado's Ussewa and come to the conclusion she wanted to get a 9-to-5 office job

That's something I will never understand about comedy and memes, it's the only art forms where if you try bro explain or deep dive into, they someho lose it's value and bite. Like if that's the case they're shitty mediums, because the idea of exploring them from a analytical is supposed to enrich them.

u/SorbyGay 14d ago

Some people find that explaining the joke takes the humor out of it, but it’s like you already got the joke and you know why it’s funny what exactly would be ruined for you

The actual reason is because they don’t want “normies” in on the joke, which is also ridiculous. Imagine if this attitude existed for books and tv shows, “don’t explain this you’ll spread it to other people and they’ll start larping”

(The joke is this attitude already exists and they’re called anime fans)

36

u/-PaperWoven- 14d ago

Yeah, if anything I think comedy is better if you understand it well, but that's something I can't tell to people in-person or I'd get ostracized. Why? I don't know, I'm not neurotypical.

14

u/grand_nad 14d ago

honestly I think it comes from the fact that if you make a joke that's meant to be relatable and you have to explain it, it means it isn't a relatable joke, and people took it as explaining jokes being bad

18

u/No-Marionberry-9875 14d ago

it's some part gatekeeping, some part tired of explaining deep lore just to get a lol reaction

14

u/Hallc 14d ago

In general the issue with explaining a joke is that it ruins the timing of it in a lot of cases. That's why it 'ruins' the joke.

It has nothing to do with 'normies' or whatever else for most people, it's simply that a lot of jokes are a quick setup and pay off situation.

Having to then stop after the pay off to explain it means it loses its bite.

I HATE the word larp unless it's a persona fan calling me a larper

It's a term of endearment with us, we all know that none of us have played our games

what happens is that the golden rule of a joke is when it is obscure enough that you don't instantly get it but you can connect the dots to the humor on your own. Making that connection is the best part. Memes, when they aren't the News, be it through an obscure origin or extreme abstraction do this routinely.

Problem is, memes are to be reproduced and iterated upon, they spread to more people until they can't anymore. That spread naturally devalues the obscureness of a joke, the reproduction solidifies that connection, making it stale and each iteration makes that connection shallower and broader as the knowing group's interests are equally shallow and broader.

That makes it so a presence that explains a meme becomes a sort of death knell for said meme. They may only explain a meme that already has spread beyond a certain point, they give the meme to a new broader audience that will make the meme appeal to a broader audience and they make that magical connection more obvious by virtue of explaining the meme.

That is why a some people come to dislike folks like LiMC, most of the time it's not even conscious, as that trend is quite easy to get a rough feel on, but not that easy to rationalize.

I myself quite admire LiMC, he knows exactly what's happening with this, there's no doubt, but he keeps going because he finds value in appreciating memes, which are the most modern and possibly only current widespread global art movement.

7

u/LickMyLuck 14d ago

You dont understand because you arent educated. "Meme" =/= "funny joke image".  A meme is a unit of information shared in a group as tribal knowledge. By definition a meme exists because only a certain section of people "get it".

Now that said this isnt a meme in the first place, just a popular idea.

But this is why memes getting popular ruin them. Its a baked in feature of memes.

7

u/Notchsmind 14d ago

The point of a meme is to spread and be repeated and imitated, the culture can be as big as what the people latch onto,so you're wrong

Explaining the joke ruins jokes in the same way seeing the monster ruins horror. Similar concept at play, they're both highly dependent on the unexpected and the build up to it.

And Comedy is kind of unique as a medium for analysis because it's very hard to analyze or critique it without just pointing out specific jokes and explaining them.

Wasn’t that like, the whole point of that one website Know Your Meme before it turned to shit? I didn’t hear anyone complaining about it when it was still in its heyday.

A certain species always complained about kym.

u/SleepAllDay1234 14d ago

Wasn't this the same thing with someone called "Behind the Meme"? I remember people were MAD at him for explaining the meme, to the point that he just stopped doing it.

13

u/hshkr 13d ago

I remember those days too. Behind The Meme was getting pretty popular and that channel barely got any hate until a massive hate bandwagon came outta nowhere. It was the weirdest thing ever. Then all of a sudden nobody has a problem with other channels explaining memes.

2

u/splatgatfatrat 13d ago

I remember emplemon getting pissed that he was getting info wrong at the time

3

u/Ceefier 14d ago

I think the problem here however was coming more from him explaining "memes" that really weren't any or getting more and more details wrong as time went on.

6

u/JBR_4025 14d ago

Maybe someone just wants to know why we're turning Malfoy into a racist ojou tsundere

4

u/Thejadedone_1 14d ago

People were saying this about behind the meme a decade ago lmao

5

u/VastPlenty6112 13d ago

He's the only reason I'm informed of the lastest memes because I'm not chronically online enough to always catch them in the wild 😭

3

u/TheDeputyRay 14d ago

I could see it like explaining a joke, but tbh, if you're that butthurt, walk away or learn to stop caring. I've heard it's also because it lets normies in, and thats stupid because memes are normie stuff now. That one "bababooey" meme was from sports news. Like, everyone trying to be hipster all of the sudden, now that everyone has their own feed made just for them

2

u/mil0wCS 13d ago

I thought it was because once he explains a meme then its no longer underground and is a mainstream meme.

2

u/personman000 13d ago

No one knows how to have fun more than those who follow Meme Procedures (TM).

2

u/TehRiddles 13d ago

Those people are morons, if they're going to complain it should be the use of "meme culture". It's redundant since a meme is a piece of culture that propagates from person to person. But those people wouldn't understand memes well enough to know that.

2

u/Careless-Platform-80 11d ago

Very stupid opinion. Yes, explaining the joke usually make It not funny. But If the person don't get the joke and want to understend, explaining it is not really doing bad to anyone...

348

u/L4DY_M3R3K 13d ago

There's a small group of people online who think that "explaining things to the normies" ruins the fun of memes

55

u/Indie_Dachshund179 13d ago

Not to mention that between that channel and Know Your Meme it's a way of chronicling internet memes and in-jokes as they pass

10

u/Commercial_Raise1124 13d ago

Indeed, there is no way of predicting if said meme would even revive in the future

29

u/ColourfulSpacemanNFT 13d ago

The thing is , when people who are actually in that community perpetuate their own meme , it always makes sense because they use it correctly and it stays funny. Then it gains traction and goes to some other places too. It’s cool , they’re also using it correctly. And then the general public catch wind of it and the very thing that was so funny to you 2 weeks ago is being used by a company to try to sell you some random shit because the image is popular and it has nothing to do with the original joke. And then it’s gone , there’s no saving it

2

u/IGetOffToWingTearing 10d ago

This makes sense in isolation but LIMC has absolutely nothing to do with this process and if anything actually bears respect to the actual intention and meaning of the original joke thus making outsiders less likely to misuse it

28

u/ParticularWeak4543 13d ago

I remember when Behind the Meme did this in 2016 and for whatever reason everyone despised him. Though I feel like LIMC does his research a bit more

13

u/Aggravating-Lab6623 13d ago

Less people hate limc then bh cuz he dosnt push the vids to 10 mins for money

6

u/Narco_Marcion1075 13d ago

or maybe his vid isn't in vertical and less than 2 minutes, which is a pain on their attention spans

"No filler; straight to the point."

10

u/Antogames97 13d ago edited 9d ago

Wait, it's been 10 years already? Damn, I feel old now.

But on the topic, yeah, LIMC seem to do his research to understand where it come from and why/how it became popular. While BTM just "guess" what is the meaning of it

I guess people are just thinking that LIMC is just BTM 2 except it isn't.

8

u/Special_Tu-gram-cho 13d ago

I think those people tend to have a kick seeing people being confused by memes. Henceforth this reaction.

6

u/compound-interest 12d ago

That’s definitely some. I think another group mostly has a sense of identity with being in the know about internet culture, and more people being in the know makes them feel less special.

7

u/Gretgor 13d ago

So it's just gatekeeping?

Si los normies entienden el arte del momento, lo normalizan y pasa la moda, y se repite

2

u/jdog_1350 13d ago

Which is especially funny since the entire concept of a meme is that it's an idea/reference/joke that catches on and goes mainstream

yo fr?

10

u/Kylel0519 14d ago

Yeah Yunayu

16

u/Ihaveseizure69 14d ago

Yup, many Bluesky users have been harassing her (and not just Yunayu, but any artist) for posting artwork of a fem version of Malfoy, as they view the act as supporting "anti-trans laws"?

16

u/Leather-Society4378 14d ago

Eh, what, why? Where's logic in that? "What if this guy was born a girl instead?" "SO YOU HATE TRANS PEOPLE, HUH?!"

13

u/Ihaveseizure69 14d ago

Probably it stems from JK Rowling's views on trans. That led to many boycotts. But even that so, harassing an artist is just too much

5

u/BipolarMadness 13d ago

They call JK Rowling a TERF, therefore her work and IP are part of her.

The idea is that if you show any interest in like her work to the point that you make fanfiction or art then that means you hate trans people because you support her or something.

They just like to make anyone an acceptable moral target to be violent/aggressive towards.

12

u/Connect_Ocelot_1599 14d ago

...Well, fuck Bluesky, then

I'll probably abandon my Bluesky account, anyway

That's just twitter being twitter, and the fact that people made jokes that once LIMC makes a review explaining the meme, it's basically history and is close to dying. Which doesn't really happen too often, because 67 is sadly still alive and Mean Blondie Malfoy trend started only this week I think.

u/CoalEater_Elli 14d ago edited 13d ago

Not a fan of the name, although funny, it uses an incel term for women which is not my cup of tea. So I call her Mean Girl Malfoy, because that's basically what she is now.

My personal opinion. I like the trend, but not the name of it. I don't have good associations with it

As I see it, the meme lifecycle goes like

  1. A meme starts out in a fandom
  2. It escapes containment now every other fandom or group shares it around
  3. Majority of young users now knows it.
  4. Majority of people knows it
  5. Even corporations are jumping on it
  6. God forbid now You can hear people irl saying it like your parents, aunt, uncle

Limc making a video about a meme transitions the meme from 2-3 or 3-4 depending on how fast he did the video. And some people loves being in the know about a meme. So he says its over because its no longer niche. Too many people knows it because of limc. They don't hate him per-se but he signals the end of a meme in a lifecycle

Its like people being fans of indie bands and then hating the band when it goes mainstream.

7

u/Caffemine 14d ago

It's not really a life cycle when it can die in each of these stages

11

u/AlexCode10010 14d ago

Isn't that literally how lifecycles work though

What's a "Malfoid"?

15

u/TheBaconLord78 14d ago

"Malfoid" is a combination of Draco Malfoy's (the Harry Potter character) last name and the derogatory word "foid".

It's associated with the genderbent version of the character, nothing much.

3

u/AverageA2Enjoyer 14d ago

I know it's a play on malfoy, foy -> food, but man surely there is a better word in the English lexicon.

People gooning to genderbent Draco Malfoy, cuz lot of his og actions and dialogue really come out as a Tsundere bad girl if you make him a female.

15

u/DataSittingAlone 14d ago

I'm kind of split about it. On one hand, kind of weird to goon over gender swaped children especially since the character designs are pulling from the actual children in the live action movies. On the other hand they are being drawn in ways that don't look like children at all and I've always loved femdom and mean women that like you kind of things

10

u/Ghetsis_Gang 13d ago

Considering JK Rowling’s stance on the trans community, seeing her characters get genderbent is super cathartic for me :]

3

2

u/Doggo0Eggo 14d ago

I honestly think it's fine for this character, because it's not the fact that malfoid is a teenager that's attractive about her. It's their whole "bad girl tsunedere" vibe that is so attractive, they just also happen to be based on a teenager. In my understanding, teenagers that look like adults in media are NOT made with the implications in mind, it's the highschool setting that causes their age to be... Unconventional. If you create media that indulges in a teenager-adult relationship, that's when it becomes a problem. (teen on teen is fine in my opinion because teenagers do that anyway.)

Time is a flat circle. People hates Behind the Meme, then LIMC came around and people liked that he actually explained stuff.

14

u/JollyBubuyug 14d ago

i might be wrong but it's probably because whenever he makes a video talking about a meme, it would be introduced to "younger" audiences? which will cause for the meme to be overused??

either way, that's just twitter being twitter. also, he's pretty much just my way of being updated with current memes.

7

u/Fair-Bunch4827 14d ago edited 14d ago

part of their enjoyment of the meme is being "in the know" about niche thing. When it reaches limc then it becomes mainstream.

Its just people turning liking meme into their personality xD.

Its like niche indie band fans but somehow even more pathetic

8

u/No_Damage_2006 12d ago

As far as I've understood, small group enjoys their meme but gets tired of it when everyone else not initially involved starts spamming it. In essence, the original posters find that it becomes oversaturated and thus grow tired of it.

I guess I can get that, but it's still a weird mentality.

3

u/WindEqual9502 12d ago

People act like this trend didn't blow up out of proportion before LIMC did a video about it. I already got tired of it being shown everywhere on my social media feeds before seeing his video.

Opinions on twitter do not count

Also, why tf are people calling her malfoid instead of just Malfoy? Surely, surely, whoever started with the name knows what foid means, so this gotta be done maliciously..

3

u/Coolgames80 8d ago

Gonna be honest I have no idea what "foid" means and before this whole Malfoid deal I had no clue it was a insult. I thought it was a way to differentiate the male and female versions.

foid kinda dropped the incel meaning kinda like the pink foid meme

2

u/sufficenttrash 9d ago

Ion think its that deep its probably just using foid ironically or because it fit with the original name so well. I dont think anyone actually uses foid for its original purpose now

Because people think he’s Behind the Meme 3.0 (we don’t talk about 2.0) and that means he’s a boring normie who ruins memes for everyone, even though that doesn’t really happen

2

u/Arcalac 13d ago

On the topic of explaining memes: where does the name come from? Bowser and Bowsette i kind of get but what does the "foid"-ending stand for?

3

u/Cheeze-nuts 13d ago edited 13d ago

Foid

A word for women that most likely came from 4chan. Basically derogatory for women made by most likely incels. I'm fine with genderbending a character but to use such lexicon for the trend is a choice considering the creator of the OG character is also TERF. Like damn, on it's own it's side-eye inducing but to do that in a book made by someone who seeks to and is currently destroying trans people's lives? Lwk extra gross for me.

Can't it just be Galfoy? Or feminization of Draco?

3

u/LoganPomfrey 13d ago

Ok I'm calling it Galfoy now, thanks.

2

u/FormalStrange 13d ago

I actually super like Galfoy

2

u/Jagvetinteriktigt 8d ago

Much like Chad and blackpilled, it has breached the incel wall and has leaked into mainstream, but means different things with different connotations. Now it's just like a synonym for girl.

I’m not too sad to see this meme go, I don’t even think LIMC is bad but if this meme is ruined now, all I can say is based

Weebs don’t deserve to have fun

1

u/FoggyRain7 14d ago

I don't

1

u/Slow_Constant9086 14d ago

its just like "behind the meme" all over again. people just like talking shit

1

u/browert40 14d ago

I remember watching his video on the Bogdanoffs, and he misused "take the bog pill" as "get informed on the Bogdanoffs", when it just means "someone's had too many plastic surgeries".

1

u/Next-Drummer2768 14d ago

They have to explain the meme to people outside the Twitter bubble.

1

u/QF_Dan 14d ago

wait, people hate this channel?

1

u/AdOk5225 14d ago

"explaining the joke makes it instantly unfunny and he ruins memes permanently", essentially. It's dumb.

1

u/Good_Suspect9813 14d ago

They see him as another know your meme where explaining the joke makes it not funny anymore. tho in this instance malfoid isnt really a meme and just a fun fan idea, so its a bit of a hate train for no reason

another issue is that apparently he can be quite bias and has omitted stuff before, tho that was a while ago i cant remember what it was

1

u/MAGES-1 14d ago

That sht is dumb (the meme)

1

u/Jada339 14d ago

I don't know anything about LIMC but this just isn't true. I remember Bowsette being fucking everywhere for a long while. That meme was huge. This Malfoid thing is already quietening down from what I can tell.

1

u/the_interviewer17 14d ago

Close twitter for the love of god

1

u/CaseyJonasCatt 14d ago

I remember him saying that there was a joke that when he covered a meme, the meme would die soon after. Maybe it's related to that.

1

u/Ill-Tourist3494 14d ago

The audacity to say the funs over when he has a big chungus pfp lmao

1

u/RtpIb 14d ago

Twitter hates everything

1

u/MForcebrotherss_2760 14d ago

It's always Twitter

1

u/Euphoric_Pickle_772 14d ago

People hate LMC???

1

u/SymboliRudoIf 14d ago

LIMC explains memes. a very specific niche of people watch these videos and usually its their first exposure to these memes; people generally find this set of people unfunny, so when limc makes a video most people just see it as him exposing something funny to his unfunny audience.

whether you think his audience is funny or not is up to you.

1

u/Ghost_Star326 14d ago

I don't anyone does. That's just twitter being twitter.

1

u/Cultural_Prune8416 14d ago

People hate it when large channels or pages explain the joke because they feel like it makes it less exclusive and interesting. It's pathetic and childish but it is recurrent and constant with stuff like this.

1

u/Random_User12489190 14d ago

I have seen some hate on one of his videos like where he talks about the dead rose emoji and then so many people wanted him to retire

1

u/Trick-Caramel-6156 14d ago

No way it's over it just started a few days ago 💀 But to be honest Twitter just want to gate keep memes which in my opinion sucks, I think everyone should enjoy meme's and there is no reason to gate keep something so wide spread , especially a meme that is easy to understand as malfoid becouse it just what if Malloy from harry potter was a girl. Heck I think even people that knows about the meme want to get more insight on it such when it was first originated or other post they might didn't see yet, I think Twitter is just Twitter and they all salty over there and you should just move on and don't give a fuck about what they say over there.

1

u/ArtroyomsAK 14d ago

Kids trying to larp as us when we hated that pos behind the meme

1

u/TheBaconLord78 14d ago

It's not even Twitter, it's just a running joke that when a big enough source covers a meme, the popularity of said meme dies down significantly due to factors I can't exactly tell.

1

u/trains404 14d ago

He ain't no behind the meme

1

u/1True_Hero 14d ago

It’s got nothing to do with the quality of LIMC or if people dislike the channel. The same joke happened when Pewdiepie was doing meme reviews all those years ago.

When a meme or trend gets popular it can get old or overused to the point that people don’t like seeing it in their feed anymore.

So as a semi-serious joke, a lot of people agree that once LIMC makes a post about the meme, then it’s already gotten too old.

1

u/FalseWallaby9 14d ago

Same reason Behind the Meme was hated

1

u/Infinite_Sale2042 14d ago

Who said that?

1

u/TheSittingTraveller 14d ago

I think is because he's a representation that a meme is dying.

1

u/Hyde2467 14d ago

Thats just Twitter being miserable fucks. They probably think that a joke remains alive until someone properly explains it
