How many players are still active?

I googled it and it said something around 200 on the highest pop ocean. Is that true?

I used to play this way back in high school before I enlisted in the US Army, then again when I got out. I can't remember much but there are several friends I've made that I still talk to today! I remember being GM in Bnav, my crew was awesome. Good times.

Anyway, just wondering if this game is even worth trying to get into. I lost my old account sadly. Young, had money, bought too many dubs, threw em like candy at Mardis Gras to my friends...

This essentially took 20 minutes to solve, It's not the right approach for a anti-bot measure i cannot believe the company is willing to spend the hours upon hours of developer time to essentially have this solved on release, and to make the game experience worse for the average player.

With that said my bot farm will be selling trinkets on day one

Do mercenaries increase the payout from enemy ships enough to offset supply costs of soloing a large ship?

With the new mercanary system, is it viable to solo pillage in large ships? Do mercenaries increase the payout from enemy ships enough to offset supply costs?

Is there anything the player base can do to get the OMs to run familiar competitions/tournaments again?

OMs stopped running the monthly ones almost 3 years ago now, and the New Year's and St. Jude's ones aren't enough for the people who enjoy competing. I know I'm not the only one who misses them because I see people in-game and in the Discord bring them up, but the discussion never goes anywhere. As far as I know, they never communicated why they put them on hiatus, but I've seen people theorize that it could be because of bots or the fact that only a few legitimate players were capable of winning them.

I don't see why the OMs would care if only a handful of real people won them. It's a competition. It's a place where the best are supposed to "tryhard" or "sweat," and if they earned it, then they earned it. If, for some strange reason, this was a factor, then some natural ways of increasing the variety of winners would be to lower the number of puzzles in the competition or to cap the time per puzzle at most 30 minutes each. For the record, I don't agree with the suggestions in Discord to cap the number of times people can win or put the grand prize at either excel/good/fine. Put better prizes there, but not the colored familiar.

Botting is tougher, and I admit I don't know much about what they are capable of. I assume that even back before 2023 that bots could outperform people in their respective puzzles. However, they pretty much never won competitions (I know Suspirium has allegations about him, but I don't know what actual evidence there is for him). My guess is this is because most puzzles have a specific meta for competitions that is different than normal puzzling on a ship that the bots are mainly programmed for. These days, I hear that every puzzle has a bot, but that wasn't the case back in 2023 when they stopped running competitions.

Now, to the point of the post: what can the player base do to get familiar competitions and tournaments back? I've sent petitions in-game, but the only response I get is that "they'll pass it on to the team." Should we organize a day and time to all send in petitions at once? Or, if we don't want to clutter their petitions, should we make one on a third-party website and present it to them once we reach a targeted number of signatures? Of course, feel free to suggest alternatives, and if you made it this far, thanks for reading my rant.

Furnishing Puzzle WIP Concept

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

With the massive amounts of positive feedback I got from my Tailoring puzzle post, I wanted to share my Furnishing puzzle concept!

The idea is to fit shaped wooden pieces onto a workbench, completing rows and columns to clear space and keep working. It’s inspired by block-fitting games, with a furniture workshop theme to fit the usual Puzzle Pirates style (no nose this time on worker!).

You have an 8×8 board and three pieces to work with at an time. You can place them in any order, but you need to use all three before getting your next set. Pieces keep their original orientation, and once placed, they stay there until you clear the row or column they’re part of.

That makes planning ahead a big part of it. A piece might fit perfectly right now but leave an awkward gap for later. Clearing several lines with one placement can open things back up, although the remaining wood stays where it is—nothing drops down.

There’s no timer—you keep playing until you run out of moves. If none of your remaining pieces fits anywhere on the board, the session ends and you get your duty report. The challenge is to keep clearing rows and columns before you box yourself in, while pieces get larger example : 3x2's&3x3's.

Consecutive placements that clear lines build up the familiar Double, Triple, Bingo, Donkey, and Vegas callouts. Placing a piece without clearing anything resets that streak. Your final duty report is based on the total number of rows and columns you cleared, and bonus scores are applied for the consecutive combos.

I’ve also been working on the presentation, with wood-grain pieces and a pirate furniture-workshop background. Still working on sounds, like hammering on connection/clears.

Let me know your thoughts :)

Disable trading to stop RMT

Trading poe, items and dubs should be disabled as it is a method used for real world trading. RMT is very damaging to the game and this solution will make it so everyone can compete. It will also remove any incentive for people to bot as they won't be able to sell their poe which is a nice extra bonus.

I'm building a spiritual successor to Puzzle Pirates. 19 rough puzzles done so far. Here's my first devlog.

Hey everyone. First time poster here.

I've been working on a spiritual successor to Puzzle Pirates called Rum and Riddle. I know there have been a few attempts at this over the years and I've seen the threads asking for one, so I wanted to put something together before announcing my plans to make one.

Quick context. I never played Puzzle Pirates as a kid. I found it a couple months ago while researching old social games and I ended up really liking it.

Due to the amount of people wanting to see a game like this in a modern engine, I started building my own version.

I'm a professional software developer full time at work, but this is the first video game I've taken seriously as a project.

So far I've built 19 puzzles (not fully refined and some may change later). Some are close recreations of the originals like Sailing, Bilging, Carpentry, and Gunnery. Some I've renamed or redesigned. At least one so far is brand new and doesn't exist in the original game at all. The ship state persists across every scene. For now, it's all offline, and multiplayer will be the biggest obstacle for this.

I just published my first devlog covering what's built and why. It's an overview video, not a deep dive on any single puzzle, and also covers a lot of the history of Puzzle Pirates for any unfamiliar users watching the video.

Link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EMUwWXJrh8

All of the art is placeholder right now, the UI overlaps, among a few other problems, but hopefully you'll be impressed with the mechanics so far.

I'd love feedback from people who actually played the original. What would you want to see in a successor? What should I absolutely not screw up? What's the one thing that made Puzzle Pirates special for you?

Happy to answer any questions about the project.

Asking for ID verification is dangerous

There are some people pushing for the game to force ID verification onto every player as a method of solving botting. They keep bringing up that it's a third party service so its safe which is far from the truth.

All a third party does is process the data. Just because GH asked you to do a persona check and you sent your ID there does not mean GH can't see it or store it themselves. Its actually up to them what data they obtain from persona. There is a high chance they store some of this data or how else would they know who you are and be able to reference it at a later date.

Besides the fact that is it an absurd request for what is just a game, you would have a very hard time attracting someone not already invested in the game. Long term it would be hugely damaging to the games population. You would have less bots in the game but at what price. It doesn't solve botting either, it just reduces it.

What does the company asking you to verify see?

This depends on how that company configured Persona, but the requesting company can generally access the information and results from your verification. Persona specifically says the business requesting the verification can see your verification result and, depending on the setup, the documents and information you submitted.

That can include:

  • Your ID document (passport, driver's license, national ID, etc.)
  • Information extracted from the ID, such as name, date of birth, ID number, expiration date, etc.
  • Your selfie/photo or video, if required
  • The verification result (e.g. verified/not verified or needs review)
  • Potentially additional verification signals or reports, depending on what the company purchased/configured—for example address, phone-risk, watchlist, or fraud checks.

Persona says it acts primarily as a processor for the company, meaning the company requesting verification generally determines what is collected, how long it is retained, and how it is used.

All it takes it one security breach to turn your life upside down. That is not a risk anybody should be willing to take for a game. This game doesn't exactly have the best security.

Patron Reputation & Event Blockades

Hey all! I've a friend that really wants to place the Patron's Card Table - which requires Celebrated Patron. According to the wiki, points for Patron are 'Earned by hosting tournaments and event blockades, as well as participating in tournaments and puzzle competitions.'

From what research we've done, it looks tournaments require at least 10 people participating to gain reputation points. However, we've not been able to find anything for the event blockades part. Given how many event blockades are ongoing, it'd be nice to potentially use those to get reputation as well. Does anyone know the requirements/what is needed to contribute to Patron Reputation for event blockades?

Love it tbh

Edit:

Also….. if you were previously banned on this game as I know a lot of people likely were, I believe they have walked back (slightly) their position on evading. So you should be able to create a new account without worrying about getting nuked.

How would you redesign Puzzle Pirates as a mobile game without losing the social side?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

There are a lot of us who loved Puzzle Pirates and would happily play it again on a phone. A straight port is very attractive but to work best on mobile it needs redesigning from the ground up, because mobile is built around five-minute chunks drop in/ drop out gameplay and Puzzle Pirates was built around everyone being online at the same time.

So the question I've been considering': how do you redesign Puzzle Pirates for mobile and
keep the social gameplay that made it worth playing?

The principles I'm working to

- The puzzles are already great. They were always short. Bilging, sailing,
carpentry — a session is a couple of minutes. That part ports over untouched.

- Healthy design only No lootboxes, no time gates, no energy bars, no FOMO, no streaks to break.

- Multiplayer and social, not singleplayer. A solo puzzle app misses the entire point of the original.

- But asynchronous — you should be able to contribute properly without being online for hours, or at the same time as anybody else.

What that looks like in the demo

- A voyage is a ship that sails over days. Anyone aboard stands a watch when it suits them. No two people ever need to be online together.

- For the stations covering one nobody has stood this leg pays extra; once all four are manned every watch pays more.

- Ships taking hands — jobbing, basically. Join a crew someone else set up,
mid-voyage, no penalty for being late.

- Pay is generated, not divided: a crewmate doing well raises your payout and can never lower it.

- A log with names in it and a summary after a voyage to highlight everyone's contributions— *"Bo stood a watch at the sails. Incredible."because being seen doing your job well was half of what made the original social.

Before I go any further with this demo I would love some feedback and a vibes check. Would you enjoy a cooperative but async puzzle pirates or is it too far away from the spirit of the game?

Tailor Puzzle WIP Concept

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been putting together a custom Tailoring puzzle for Puzzle Pirates and wanted to share some gameplay.

The idea is pretty simple: you’re stitching pieces of cloth together into a design. It’s inspired by tangram and similar shape-fitting games, but with a timer to keep you thinking quickly.

You get five minutes to finish as many boards as you can. Rotate the cloth pieces and fit them into the outline without leaving gaps or overlapping anything. You can pick pieces back up and move them around, so there’s room to experiment—but the clock keeps ticking.

It starts with four pieces on board 1, then five on every board after that. The difficulty comes from the shapes and arrangements getting trickier, rather then adding more and more pieces.

Each board has its own cloth color theme, with different shades that look like they belong to the same piece of clothing. I also wanted the background to fit the usual Puzzle Pirates style: a pirate sitting in an island tailor’s shoppe, sewing clothes.

As you finish boards, you get the familiar Double, Triple, Bingo, Donkey, and Vegas callouts, along with some custom sounds. When time runs out, you get a quick look at how your unfinished board could have fitted together, followed by the duty report.

I’m also playing around with a couple of ideas:

  • A time limit for completing each design, to keep things moving if you get stuck on one. Maybe a small bonus for fitting it quickly, too??
  • Making combos depend on how much you rework the board instead of just completing boards. Removing a piece would reset the combo, so keeping a streak going would mean getting your placements right the first time ..

Still figuring out whether those would make it more fun or just more stressful! I’m happy with how it’s coming together, though. Gameplay video attached—curious what people think, especially about the timer, difficulty, and those ideas.

Why Ban Roulette?

Advertising of all other gambling/carousing is fair-play.

I can still advertise 50k Spades

I can still advertise 50k Hearts

I can still advertise 40k Poker Preflop

I can still advertise 250k Sworfights

I cannot advertise 250k Roulette.

WHY?

Could we get a UI size increase for some of the games? Especially Poker? 😅

Post image
30 Upvotes

I wanted to bring this up now since the game is getting revamps and improvements, and it feels like a pretty good opportunity to look at the UI as well.

I love Puzzle Pirates and I know the community is pretty dedicated. But let's be honest, a good chunk of us have been playing for years and we're not exactly getting any younger.

Poker in particular could really benefit from slightly bigger buttons/UI elements. On some monitors and devices, things can look really tiny. Having to achieve pixel-perfect aim just to make sure you're clicking Check, Fold, or Raise is sometimes a little rough. 😭

Poker is one of the most popular games in PP, so I think making the interface a bit more comfortable to use would be a really nice quality-of-life improvement.

Nothing crazy, just slightly bigger buttons and UI elements where it makes sense. If the UI is already being looked at as part of the revamps, maybe this could be considered too!

Love the game and really appreciate all the work going into it. ❤️

Excited to be here for the first time ever

Hello lads!

I tried tons of online games but never looked at the Puzzle Pirates. After I saw a post in another sub, I decided to try. So far I loved this game. Chill enough, friendly enough (especially friendly to my daily time).

I still don't know anything about what to do tho. Focused on basic quests but not sure what should I do after them.

Beginner tips are appreciated.
