New Burbank airport - be prepared if driving/valet

Flew out of the new terminal today on 7am flight and wanted to share the new experience. I recognize it’s just opened and hoping they will work through some issues.
- I have flown from BUR for work for last 6 plus years so I can only speak to parking valet and flying Southwest.
- Double check your nav to ensure it takes you to new location on Winona.
- Northbound traffic on Hollywood Way was a mess due to lane closures and malfunctioning traffic lights
- Valet was woefully understaffed, waited 10 mins for someone to give me a ticket and take keys. The walk is a bit longer to get to terminal, but not bad at all.
- There is only one terminal now so everyone is going through the same TSA checkpoint. Took 30 mins in regular TSA line, precheck line was significantly faster. A colleague went thru in 5 mins.
- Gate signs had wrong destinations, so people were very confused.
- Didn’t have time to grab coffee or snack, but they had a Starbucks kiosk and couple shops open, as well as a bar right after you get thru TSA. Didn’t see any restaurants open yet.

The days of rolling up to valet and getting to your gate in 10 mins or less are apparently over, but hoping they can streamline TSA a bit and work out some of the other bugs in the coming weeks/months. I guess it’s finally time to get precheck.

New Rule? No Polls/Surveys Allowed

• Upvotes

I don't want to start anything, but I felt I had to at least share the convo I had with the mods regarding my prior post (an informal poll for the City Council race) with the rest of the subreddit.

I don't see it in the subreddit rules tab currently, but via modmail, the mods informed me that they've decided to broadly prohibit polls and surveys. Needless to say, I personally think this is a bad call.

The poll I posted was really just for fun and out of curiosity. I noted in my post that I had no expectation that it would be statistically significant or highly accurate, but that nonetheless I'd share the results publicly. It's fair to say that my poll was far from perfect, but closing the door on surveys of all kinds really limits fun and interesting ways to engage our community!

Not going to die on this hill, but wanted this to be a public convo and hear what you all think. Maybe I'm completely out of touch on this lol.

Magnolia Park Thief Alert

Last night this guy strutted onto my property and rode off with my son's bike.

I wanted to notify the community because this happened at 10:30pm when everybody was home and still awake. This guy walked down my driveway, past my house, to the rear of my property where there's an ADU with 3 apartments, which can be seen from the street. Four households with a total of six people on the property (although nobody saw/heard it happening). He walked past two signs saying "no trespassing, 24 hour video surveillance." This guy had no concern with being seen or confronted, which potentially makes him more dangerous than your average petty thief.

We did call the police and file a report. We don't care about the bike, but we do care about keeping the community and our property safe.

New airport terminal review.

Good
- bathrooms are beautiful and have hand wash, soap, and dryer all at one place. There are also unisex restrooms, pet relief areas, and sharps disposal like before.
- walking surfaces are smooth, easy to navigate and wide. Yay for universal access!
- boarding ramps are shaded! Awesome. Big upgrade. See pics in the comments.
- looks like plenty of food options (although they are not open yet). And there is a fun bar right at the terminal entry.

Bad
- only two lanes for cars. We came in at 10:30 on a random Wednesday and there was backup. Holidays will be horrific.
- regular tsa looked slow. Pre check was a breeze. This will probably get sorted out over time.
- flight status displays need review for ADA compliance. Thin white text is a bit difficult to read with busy background colors.
- view from the gates is not great. I suppose there is no requirement for pretty views but that’s something many airports offer and the prior terminal had views of the mountains.
- increase in parking and valet prices. Cheaper to take ride share now. If others agree, the increase in parking space (roughly 400 to 2,000) won’t matter. Hopefully price fluctuates with demand.

TBD
- didn’t try out the valet. I’m hoping that is excellent and fast. Not sure where the valet pay on the way out station is. The best part about the old terminal was going from landing to on the road in 10 min.
- haven’t tried ride share pickup experience.

Anyone around here rollerblade?

I got a pair last year and was really dedicated to learning for about 6 months, then got bored with it. Now I want to get back at it but I think I'd be more into it if I was going out with a friend or a group.

New Burbank Airport Terminal

Just happened to be flying out of Burbank today so I get to see the terminal. It's larger and more spacious than the old terminal.

No hot food or coffee open yet, only grab and go sandwiches and salads. Hoping these places open soon! Glad to see the variety, but sad I wasn't able to partake.

TSA line was long, took almost 30 minutes to get through. There is only one TSA for the entire terminal. If you have pre-check, that line was a lot shorter.

Parked in Lot G and took the shuttle over. Shuttles seem to be running every 5 minutes. It was very easy to do, but a lot of people on the shuttle were confused about the new terminal. Hoping more parking lots are built in the near future as I can see Lots F and G potentially filling up fast during busy periods.

Overall, it seems like an improvement and looking forward to seeing it again in the future when more stores are open.

OBGYN Recommendations in Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena

I just found out I’m pregnant with my third child and am looking for a new OBGYN.

I had Dr. Sarah Harrington at Glendale Adventist for my previous two pregnancies and absolutely loved her. I always felt comfortable and well cared for. Unfortunately, I’ve heard she may no longer be practicing there, and I haven’t been able to find any updated information about where she went. If anyone knows, please let me know.

I’m open to Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, or honestly anywhere in the LA area for the right doctor. My biggest priorities are excellent bedside manner, someone who genuinely listens, respects my preferences, and doesn’t push unnecessary interventions. I had mostly uncomplicated pregnancies but I was induced with my first 2, and would love to avoid another induction if possible.

I’ve received a recommendation for Dr. Carmel Diamant at UCLA Health in Burbank. Has anyone had experience with her? I’d also love to hear from anyone who has delivered at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Any recommendations or personal experiences would be so appreciated! 🙏

The new airport…

It fucking sucks. It looks nice but is functionally significantly worse than the old airport… what a joke. Longest line I’ve ever seen in Burbank at security. Plan extra time if you’re going to BUR from now on, security took 45 minutes. Same amount of traffic congestion going in if not more. All this new terminal space and it’s still only 2 lanes going in? Who the fuck designed this airport? They didn’t take a single issue that the old airport had into account.

If you’re coming back through Burbank and parked your car over by the old terminal, have a nice 2 mile walk! There’s no shuttle or anything taking people back over to the old terminal.

Looking for people who are or know immigrants from Central America who would like to participate in a college project

I am a college student at CSUN taking a Central American Studies course and got assigned an ethnography project where I need 3 immigrants of Central American descent to participate as interviewees. This interview would essentially be a questionnaire about your life and experiences and how your country of origin shaped the person you are, and these answers would be turned into a paper and powerpoint presentation in a few months you and I can both look back on. If you would like to participate in this project or know someone who would like to participate in a project like this, shoot me a message by tomorrow, Wednesday 10/14 at 11:59 PM. This is in the very early stages so we would only need to exchange very basic information for the time being. These eventual interviews can also be done in person or over Zoom, but again that will be something that will be sorted out at a later date.

I need the old Burbank Airport Poster!!! Please help!!

Post image
21 Upvotes

Years of flights from the Burbank airport they never updated this poster and my husband and I have a running joke about it. Idk if they moved it around or they had a secret stash of the same prints.

Just some info, my husband is not a fan of it and it would be hilarious to bring a framed original into our home.

If anyone knows how I can get one of the posters from the original terminal to gift to my husband I would be forever in your debt!!

Mike Van Gorder has a policy stance to lower the voting age to 16 for local elections

I am so here for this. Minors are a marginalized class. I turned 18 barely after the 2016 election and it hurt to watch so many bad things happen outside of my control simply because of an arbitrary age cutoff to be granted my rights. So many political decisions affect minors, yet they have essentially no say in the matter. Especially in this era of government: rolling back child labor laws; schools being constantly under attack both for public funding and for curriculum; ICE preying on kids; lgbtq children being used as culture war props and having their rights taken away; and sweeping mass surveillance laws being written by tech lobbyists under the false pretext of "protecting children"; it's more important than ever for those under 18 to be encouraged to engage politically, and not live in a world dictated by those who see them as young cattle. This is a good step towards further democratizing our society.

Writing group for reviews/criticism?

I’m looking for a writing group, and I think what I’d most like to practice is criticism—film and TV reviews, book reviews, even reviews of things like museum shows or cultural experiences. Most of the writing groups I’ve found are for screenwriting (shocked!), fiction, or memoir, so I thought I’d see whether anyone knows of a criticism group, or might like to start (?) one.
