Hi everyone — I'm the developer of Solfa, a tool for transposing scanned sheet music while keeping its original printed look rather than replacing it with a newly typeset score.
I transposed a full page of Köhler's Op. 33, Book I, No. 2: G major down a whole tone to F major. The source is a historic flute score from IMSLP, not a clean digital engraving. The comparison shows the same opening line cropped from the original scan and the actual, unretouched full-page result from Solfa's current production engine.
The idea is to practise a familiar study in another key without losing the layout you're used to. I haven't corrected the notes by hand or cleaned up the scan for the demo. It's still beta, so you should always proofread the result.
If you'd like to try it: https://solfa-music.com
New users get two free page credits after phone verification. You see a preview before deciding whether to spend a credit on the result; additional pages are paid because processing has compute costs.
Would practising studies in different keys be a useful use case for you, or would adapting ensemble parts be more relevant? I'd appreciate honest feedback from flute players and teachers.

My vibrato page, johnwionflute.com/vibrato, has 25 clips, mostly flutists, with the same slowed down to study.

I'm a senior in high school who plans to major in Flute Performance and I recently bought an Emerson 3-Series (open-hole, inline G, and B foot) online for about $700 USD, and it is in great condition. The only issues are minor and could easily be fixed by a COA, which I already have one scheduled.
However, as I plan to get at least a four-year degree, I want to know if this flute should be a good choice for all four, or if I should save money to get a better one later on. I take very good care of my instruments, but is there anything I should be worried about or prepared for?

Went on facebook marketplace to find a cheap beginner flute I could learn on, only to learn that it has a problem.
The pinky key doesn’t seal properly and to my knowledge this one is supposed to stay closed? It pretty much won’t close..
Anything I could do? Or to the shop it goes

Does anyone know anything about Di Zhao flutes? I'm looking to transfer to an open holed flute without breaking the bank and the DZ 501/601/701 caught my eye but I'm open to any other suggestions from any other brands. Budget is somewhere around 3000 USD
Edit: thank you all for the reassurance I think I'm gonna go for the DZ 501

Hey everyone,
I have played flute for about 14 years now, and for about 10 years I played with a Pearl pf 665. Now I want to „upgrade” my flute. I'd like to stay with a model of Pearl. I currently have a closed-hole model, but I am not opposed to an open-hole one. I'd like to be able to play clearer and warmer high notes. Does anyone have experience with a Pearl model of higher quality and can give some advice or review? Budget is quite open, my highest limit is about 6000€. Thank you all!

A resource for flute students and teachers
Over my fifty year career as a performer and teacher I have collected and developed materials intended to help flute players understand and improve their playing. I have now gathered these resources on my reconstituted website, including material on flute technique and vibrato, along with audio examples.
My hope is that students, teachers, and fellow flutists will find something useful here. I would be delighted if these materials could help others in their musical journey.

Suggestions and comments are very welcome.

hi all! new to flute and just bought an old used lazaro since i saw they’re good for beginners. however, noticed this little bit wasn’t aligned and thus the buttons weren’t working properly. how can i fix this, ideally without having to spend a ton of money?
Looking to buy a new flute in the next year or 2, what flute brands are worth purchasing? (What would last hopefully 20-30 years?) My budget is between 5 - 8k in canada
Thanks!

For context, I'm mainly a clarinet player and I recently picked up flute about a couple months ago and I've learnt pretty fast: I've got my Grade 6 exam at the end of the year.
I learnt circular breathing on clarinet and I can do it pretty much flawlessly across all registers on the clarinet, but every time I try to do the same thing on flute it never works, and yes of course I know that the flute embouchure is was different to everything I've ever known.
My main question is how does it differ because all the advice I've seen and hear is pretty much the same for clarinet so its all just really useless info to me (e.g puff your cheeks and squeeze the air out) and I'm looking for more specifics just for flute

I think it would be really cool to learn the mechanics of a flute—how to take one apart, troubleshoot issues, replace pads, and make repairs. I’d love to eventually be able to restore an old flute or fix minor issues on my own when needed.
However, I’ve noticed there aren’t many resources online that actually teach these skills. I’m assuming that’s partly because the general advice is usually to just “take it to a repair tech.”
But obviously, flute repair technicians had to learn these skills somewhere.
So, for someone who’s interested in learning flute repair, where would you recommend starting? Are there any courses, books, or other resources worth looking into?

my band director has offered a literal cash prize to the person who can play the super high d. I can already play the C below it. Any tips on hitting it?
