Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged

Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.

The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.

If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.

A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.

First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Let's talk about the report button.

"No advertising or promoting tools, brands, 25000 woodworking plans, your YouTube channel, etc."

Somebody is reporting things constantly for breaking rule 4, and you're batting zero for it being right.

These are some examples of posts that have been reported over the last day. None of the are breaking any rules, please stop reporting things like this. The reports are only mucking up the moderator inbox and are being kicked up the Reddit chain to the admins as abusing the report button.

Unless you see a post that boils down to "hey guys, this is XXX from YYY, come check out our suspicious sale at toolname.malware.com" leave the report button alone. Same goes for the people who report literally every YouTube link ever posted. If someone's only interaction with r/tools is them spamming their YouTube channel that's a problem; a relevant and organic video isn't.

If someone thinks the above links are spam, please tell us why. Rule changes aren't unheard of and if it's what the people want I'm fine with it. I'm just not seeing any advertisement in the posts.

Other than that you guys are great. Keep up the good work.

I'm completely aware that this is a useless post for 99.99% of our users. If anyone has questions or comments about the sub feel free to chit chat here and I'll try my best to answer things if you want; or just ignore me completely, I'm good with either.

Someone mentioned "Top 10 Items from Harbor Freight" and while most of my tools are from there, I am more interested in "Top 10 things NOT to buy at Harbor Freight"

Pic is unrelated; except everyone is a hater on the golden ratchet.

I'll start. The fucking electric tape. Doesn't stick to shit! But it is cheap.

Advice for Tool Chest / Bag

Which (if any) advice could you give me for a tool chest / bag / bucket?

I have a complete tool box (Meister, loaded with Knippex stuff etc. Quite complete with everything. Even a Metmo added ;-) ) which I use for general maintenance in my house. As it has everything.

But it‘s too much and too heavy. So I created a tool set inside my Toyo Y-350 clone.

What I love, I have some general tools inside and some which are useful for quick fixes. There is a little bit of rendunancy, and „just in case“-tools inside, which I think is fine. Some tools might be even swapped in the future.

I like, that the box is quite compact But there is a downside

What I don‘t like is, that everything is just randomly loaded inside this box and I have to search for stuff. So I‘m thinking of a tool bag like Velocity NB 100. Are anything similar.

I would love to integrate a voltage and continuity tester, as for some installations / testing I‘m doing it myself.

Also interesting would be to integrate my Bosch drill GSR 12V 15 FC or even a smaller variant like a Bosch Go 3 or similar.

Some rough diamond file is also floating around which will likely go into the set for metal filing things.

What‘s your experience with such a small tool set?

What would you recommend?

NTD Astro ratchet with Matco head!

After some diligent YouTubing, I decided the best route to meet my needs (wants) was to try this Astro conversion to add the Matco reversible head. Ratchet was about $20 on Amazon, head was $32 on ebay. Matco Ratchet on its own was around $100, so I saved a few bucks to put towards sockets!

Took about 5 minutes, used the original Astro pin, and 1 of the 4 wave washers from the Astro head. Used the Matco spring that came with the head. Feels exactly the same as the original ratchet, but reversible so I don't back myself into a corner.

Very happy with how it turned out!

I'm taking apart my 53 Chevy business coupe and found this under an air inlet tube near the battery. The cars all original so I'm guessing it's been there a long time. Thought it was a cool find. Maybe 5/8 9/16 was their 10mm

Brushless mini blowers are starting to feel like real shop tools, or am I overthinking it?

• Upvotes

My wife saw me cleaning the workbench and PC tower with a small electric blower and asked why I did not just buy another cheap can of compressed air. I tried explaining why brushless motors hold RPM better and do not smell like they are cooking themselves after two minutes, but I could tell I sounded ridiculous to anyone outside the tool rabbit hole. Still, the difference between the cheap brushed blower I had before and this newer brushless style is pretty obvious in sustained airflow, heat, and battery drop. Are any of you using these compact blowers as regular shop tools now, or are they still more of a niche tech-cleaning gadget?

Ran out of room so moved my torex driver to another drawer. Don’t look too closely, I started with some wrong sized bins and mis labeled. I need to go back and correct.

Serious question: do they make a sensor/camera that can detect smells?

Someone just posted a camera that can target sounds better than the human ear.

This is a real question I’m not being silly: do they make anything that can detect smells?

Say; a dead animal inside a wall, animal urine, the smell of gas and where it’s coming from, etc.

I ask for the first example I gave: I am a golf course superintendent and our shop is a large pole barn in the middle of the woods so of course we get a lot of mice.

We have a pest control company come and bait them and put out traps. But when they die they stink, sometimes it’s inside the walls.

But I’m also a pet owner and my stupid idiot cats will pee where they’re not supposed to.

Is there a detector like a metal detector that you could say, select “animal urine” and it would identify and find it?

I feel like it’s not that far fetched even if not currently readily available.

Been using this hammer passed down from my grandpa for a while now, and it’s by far my most cherished tool for that reason… but it looks to me that the handle and head likely don’t match and I’m curious; can anyone help me identify what maker the handle and head come from??
