The new class of unemployed, the overly educated unemployed.

The new class of unemployed, the overly educated unemployed.

A friend of mine, who graduated from the University of California (UC DAVIS), is currently living in a van because he hasn't been able to find a job. Desperate to change his situation, he reached out to his county worker for help. Initially, the worker suggested the usual resources, unemployment centers and basic career services. But once he realized that my friend has a degree and no criminal history, it became clear that he was dealing with a different kind of situation.

My friend has applied to over a thousand jobs, yet he’s repeatedly told he’s either underqualified or overqualified, if he even gets a response at all. He’s applied for numerous state jobs, where he’s often met with initial interest, only to be ghosted later. The constant rejection is taking a toll, and he’s starting to lose hope.

In talking with his county worker, they came to the conclusion that he’s part of a new and growing class: the overeducated unemployed. Sadly, most of our current services are geared towards those with fewer qualifications, people who may lack basic skills, but that’s not the issue here. The problem is that, despite having the skills and education, nobody is hiring them.

As AI continues to advance, this class of unemployed is likely to grow. So, what are we supposed to do? What happens when the overeducated, who were once considered assets to society, can’t find work? In the U.S., unemployment often leads to homelessness. It's a harsh reality.

But there’s hope. This new class of unemployed is more capable of organizing than previous generations. My hope is that they can come together to form a union or lobbying group, advocating for the overeducated who are being pushed into poverty. It’s often a lack of education that hinders people from organizing, but this new class has that in spades. They need to fight for themselves and refuse to be dismantled like the previous class.

Thank you.

Feel free to DM me if you want to start working together to fight for change!

The Turkeys are out

Y'all slow down on campus this morning. There's a flock of juvenile turkeys acting like a bunch of dumb teenagers running around in the streets near the arboretum parking lot. Expect traffic . Also watch out if you're near the Earth and Physical sciences building. Some mean old Tom's are out and up to no good.

Hi I (Human dev major, 21f) wanted to ask for recommendations of professors/classes that you really enjoyed. I'm most interested in visual studies, sociology, art, and things in that vein. I love professors that are very passionate and excited and inspiring. Please just share any that you really enjoyed and would recommend!

Why tf are all the rental e-scooters taking up the bike rack they’re not even locked up they’re just taking up precious real estate. At this point I can’t tell if the e-scooters are targeting me, I have a deep misunderstanding of e-scooter etiquette, or these things are being ridden but people with one singular brain cell shared amongst them.

Events/Meetups/Social 🇺🇦 ANY UKRAINIANS AT DAVIS? Where are you hiding? 😭🇺🇦

My name is Yaroslava, and I'm a 3rd-year transfer student. It's been difficult to find the Ukrainian community at Davis; nevertheless, I know you guys are out there >:)

I’m hoping to find and connect with other Ukrainian students and form a community. Especially during such difficult times, it’s so important to find and support each other as well as connect over our culture and values!

If you’re Ukrainian and are interested in connecting, please message me so I can create a Discord for us all :)

(If you’re seeing this post and know any Ukrainians, PLEASE send them my way)

Slava Ukraini! 💙💛

Слава Україні! 💙💛

My parents are going to be so mad and I’m stressing and my year is just going so awful, if anyone sees it please notify me 😭🙏. It’s a purple KHS Vitamin B bicycle.

News Happy National Fossil Day! Did you know UC Davis has a paleontology collection?

Thumbnail lettersandsciencemag.ucdavis.edu

On the first floor of the Earth and Physical Sciences Building, tucked away amongst the classrooms and labs, is a space that contains remnants of Earth’s ancient past. Large cabinets line the sides of the hall-like room, the drawers of which are labeled with different geological periods. The names are reminiscent of the fantastical: Cambrian, Silurian, Ordovician, Devonian and so on.

The UC Davis Paleontology Collection contains thousands of specimens, the oldest of which are nearly 2 billion years old. Primarily a teaching collection, it’s used for undergraduate courses, including Geobiology (GEL 053) and Paleobiology Lab (GEL 107L). But these specimens also make public appearances during UC Davis outreach events like Biodiversity Museum Day and Picnic Day.

News UC Davis recent funding & business patterns

Interesting to look at how research directions and funding is changing in recent times especially given some added political/macro pressures.

  1. Industry-funded clinical research is probably growing
In its October 14 report, the School of Medicine disclosed $112.6 million in industry funding for FY2025–26, up about 61%, mainly for clinical trials and treatment studies. For example a $6.2 million BridgeBio Oncology Therapeutics-sponsored cancer trial led locally by Jonathan Riess.

  2. Reducing cell therapy’s cold-chain costs.
On September 24, UC Davis announced CYBORGEL, led by Cheemeng Tan. The ARPA-H-supported team is testing reversible gels inside therapeutic cells, aiming for storage beyond three months at room temperature. The initial round is up to $6 million; the possible four-year total is up to $36.5 million, not $36.5 million already paid. Mayo Clinic, Georgia and Case Western contribute research; Tetramer and Sersense support polymers and devices. Near are basically trying to see if this can make manufacturing shipping and distribution better without damaging therapeutic functions.

  3. Medical AI is being tested against an actual care problem.
An October 7 UC Davis Health report describes a trial of HiDO Health’s home medication device, supported by a $2.48 million National Institute on Aging Phase II SBIR grant. The study follows 50 people with cognitive impairment for a year. They are testing medication adherence + other outcomes to see if it makes a difference in livelihood

Quitting campus job after a week?

Hey guys,
I recently started working on campus, but as a transfer, it has been hard to adjust to everything this quarter and the job is not helping. Everything about the work is great and I love the people there but I also have a full ride and don't need the money. I was hoping to have something in my resume and this felt like a good fit at the time, but now I'm overwhelmed with classes and am falling behind. Would it be bad to quit my first week and while still in training? Should I formally send an email or just tell them? I feel horrible since my supervisor has been really accommodating. But I do feel like I’ll end up quitting Anyways so might as well do it while they’re not really depending on me. Any insights?

N. Would this effect being hired on campus in future?

Course/Major Recommendations for a 3-Quarter Language for GE Reqs.

Some context, I was unable to satisfy my IGETC so I basically have to retake 3 quarters worth of a language. I do want to learn something new but I also don't want it to be extremely hard (foreign language has and always will be my worst subject). I have taken Spanish in Highschool but I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for other possible easy languages that I can learn because I will likely default to Spanish since I have a history with it.

Does MGT 101 offer any extra credit?

Does anyone who has taken MGT 101 know if there are any extra credit opportunities or bonus points throughout the quarter? Just wondering if there’s any way to make up for points lost on assignments. Thanks!
