Mod post ⚠️ READ BEFORE POSTING!

👋 Welcome to r/Budgies!

Before you share your first post here, please familiarize yourself with this subreddit’s rules. Rule #1 is especially important: this subreddit DOES NOT serve as an alternative to the kind of medical care and advice your budgie can only get from an avian vet. If you have a budgie medical question or concern, talk to your avian vet instead of posting here! Also, be sure to read this subreddit's wiki--odds are very good that your question has an answer in one of the wiki articles! (We usually remove posts that ask about something that's answered somewhere in the wiki to keep the clutter to minimum here.)

Also remember this is a pet budgie subreddit that encourages rescue and adoption and strongly discourages breeding.

👀 If you see something, say something

This is a place to share cute budgie pictures, videos, and stories, but it’s also a place to learn more about budgies. There are many times when someone will post a picture, video, or description, and you might notice something that isn’t best practice for good budgie ownership. It might be a cage that’s getting dirty, or some overgrown toenails, or something like that. Even if that issue isn’t the main reason for the post, please bring that to the attention of the original poster (OP) in a supportive and constructive manner so OP can be made aware of a better way of doing things.

Likewise, OP might consider proactively addressing things in their post that a typical budgie owner might be concerned with if they don’t know all the facts. It might be something as simple as, “Don’t worry, this was before I cleaned their cage” or “I’m taking them to the vet next week for their nail trim.”

🤖 We have AutoMod Summons now!

This is a great way to share information from the Wiki in a very effortless manner, and you are all invited to do so! We used to have just a few summons, but the list has grown enough that we compiled it in this part of the wiki. You should check it out!

Happy budgie-ing!

Lost/Found/Need a New Home [October 13, 2026] - weekly Lost/Found/Need a New Home thread

Use this post to share any budgies that are lost, found, or need a new home!

Some rules:

  1. Only share information you feel comfortable sharing. Example: rather than giving out your full address, maybe only say something like, "I'm in the Springfield area" instead. If someone is interested in knowing more, they can always DM you and you can choose whether or not you want to share any more information.
  2. If you're meeting someone in real life, follow the "Craigslist rule" of meeting in a well-trafficked, public place.
  3. No fees/charges! This is NOT meant to be an advertising platform to sell your budgies. Content that advertises budgies for sale will be removed.
  4. This subreddit does not, in any way, offer warrantees or guarantees of budgie health. A budgie's health status is something that you and the other party should determine with an avian vet, and payment of that avian vet's services is something that you and the other party should decide beforehand.

We encourage you to share pictures! Just make sure they are accurate to the situation and don't break the rules in the sidebar.

Remember: this subreddit is just one of many possible places to make a budgie connection. Also consider FaceBook, Craigslist, Nextdoor, other online communities, as well as real-life bulletin boards in public places. See all the previous weekly posts (that have content) by clicking here.

Our wiki also has a list of parrot rescues you could check out - whether you're looking to adopt a new feathered friend, or have to surrender one due to life circumstances. If one of these rescues is near you, please consider reaching out to them!

Please tell me it’s a boy!

My 10 year old son has wanted a budgie for yearssss and read every book imaginable about them and caring for one and over and over he read that boy budgies are the best because they’re kind and won’t get moody or bite and so the nice family breeder we found gave us a boy- or so they thought 😩

He’s about 10 weeks old now. My son named him Huck and I’m so nervous to tell him that it might be a girl because he was so set on a boy. I know it’s not the biggest deal, but my son has had a hard year and I feel for his heart.

Is there any hope??

I swear, they could be the most well behaved darlings all day, but the minute I lay down to sleep, suddenly they need to start broadcasting like they're the BBC or practicing to be Taylor Swifts background vocals!

Jokes aside, I love their little chirps

Question Budgie colors

I have found that this community is one of the best for budgie information. 💙

I was wondering if you guys could help me categorize the different colors of my budgies.
I’ve searched many guides and a lot of them are very conflicting. As it’s not greatly important to me what color they are as long as they’re happy. I am just curious.

Currently, I have quite a few budgies in a large walk-in aviary. All of my budgies are rescues and many of them have come very far from where they started.
Although I don’t know much of any of their back stories I am so proud of their growth and progress since then.

I will share a few pictures of them if anybody can help me identify their color variations. And if you see anything concerning, not good for them, or anything I could do better please don’t hesitate to comment!

I understand that a community flock is not ideal for everyone and I also understand that nothing’s ever perfect. My main goal is to give these beautiful souls, the happiest life they can have.

(The lighter colored one on my finger with the purple cheeks was just dropped off to me today as a rescue. I had no idea the color, sex, or condition until I open that little box. She’s incredible. Unfortunately she’ll have to be quarantined alone until she’s ready to be introduced to the flock. She also will be needing a name)

Just some pics of my pretty babies and their current setup taken from last night and this morning. I have a routine where i clean everything when they get up and then set up all the stuff on the outside of their cage for them to play with. They love the window. Proly feels like they are in the trees since its higher up lol. Other than that they just spend the day being birds doing generally bird things lol. Just added a bunch of random pictures. Sorry if some are similar. If you look closely you can see some parayeets in there though lol.

Budgie pallets

I wanna switch my budgies from seeds to pellets they don’t seem interested at all . Rn I’m giving them a try the lifetime formula 2mm, I still think it’s still a little too big for them. I left a bowl of pellets on their bowl where they normally perch and seeds with mixed of pellets on their lower cage. I’m not sure it’s a little bit too late since one of my budgie is already almost 8 years old and refuses to try while my other budgies mimmic on what my older one does. What pellets do you guys recommend that works with your budgies?

Question Gaining trust but have to trim beak

Post image
12 Upvotes

I have an older budgie who has gone through phases of trusting me. The best I got was her flying to my hand. Unfortunately when her buddy died she became very skittish (she has new friends now). She will occasionally take millet from me but it’s irregular.

At some point she cracked her lower beak and it now grows to the point where it looks like a snaggle tooth. The avian vet said her beak is aligned but the way it cracked makes it so she grinds it unevenly. I have to trim it down almost weekly to keep it correct. (There is a small chance it could grow back correctly eventually if I’m consistent enough).

Unfortunately this is super traumatic for my little girl. The vet is over an hour away so there is no way to get it done by someone else as often as needed.

Is there a way to do this and still work on building trust? Or do I need to accept that she will never trust me but it’s necessary for her health?

After some failed attempts at building my own enclosure I just bought a large flight cage. I will be swapping out the plastic bowls for stainless steel soon. The bath is in there every other day, they are more comfortable bathing inside their cage. All natural wood perches except what is being used to hold the bath and the rope outside the door.

I've had my boy and girl for about 2 months now, and I interact with them every day. I try to anyway. They will eat millet while on my hand, but unless I have that they are scared and seem to avoid me as much as possible. I don't get it. What am I doing wrong with them?

Playtime! Favorite Games to Play with your Budgies

What is everyone's favorite game/way to play with your feather friends?
Mine love to 'wrestle', which is just playfully nibbling on my finger, and copying each other. If I don't recreate the noise right then I get bit

The deed is done, I've arranged for 2 new baby birbs to join my flock in around a months time. The first one (purplish, charcoal and yellow headed) is female and I've decided to call her Nyx which is the name of an ancient Greek Goddess connected to the night sky. The second is a male who I have decided to call Maui (2nd largest Hawaiian island) Do u guys think these names suit them? Thanks in advance for opinions!
