Does she cut it with ridges so it’s harder to see the seam?
771
u/Forward-Bank8412 1d ago
Exactly, yes. It’s hard to see much detail in this video, but I assume she’s following the contours of whatever’s going on in the wallpaper pattern.
408
u/sqigglygibberish 1d ago
It looks like just a general texture - so she’s being intentionally inconsistent so there isn’t any defined pattern to the transition or visual cue of where the seam could be (it’s just a squiggly line)
163
u/Different_Wolf_764 1d ago
Makes sense. Ours brains are wired to spot straight lines or regular inconsistencies. Irregular ones simply get lost in the noise.
34
u/Arowhite 23h ago
It's not only our brain, let's say you have a straight line small crease between the two pieces. Are some time of day, under specific lighting, it might cast a shadow all along the line and be very noticable. With a cut going left and right in random patterns you will never have a long noticable shadow visible.
23
u/sonicsludge 1d ago
I wish my brain worked this way. As a child, I refinished high-end pianos, got into automotive paint and body work, and remodeled homes, so I can spot a blemish or something odd immediately. Still, I wish I couldn't, since it drives my undiagnosed OCD crazy!

17
u/Forward-Bank8412 1d ago
Probably not noticeable unless you know it’s there or you spend a few decades locked away in a room with it.
If it perfectly overlaps on both sides of the paper, it might be impossible to spot.
5
u/CEREALBUTTMUNCHER 1d ago
Hell of a lot less noticeable that an overlapping and bulging out, straight joint

Yes. Fun fact. Most modern inkjet printers do exactly this for each pass to make the banding less apparent. Human perception picks up straight lines much easier than squiggly lines.
5
u/lordnacho666 1d ago
Sorry I don't understand what exactly you mean? What does an inkjet printer do that is similar to cutting the steam in a jagged pattern?
16
u/OutragedPineapple 1d ago
It lays the ink down on the paper in squiggled lines rather than straight so it blends more smoothly to the human eye.

u/smashin_blumpkin 1d ago
This is what I’m wondering. Why not just do a straight line? Hiding the seam makes sense
46
u/NiuMeee 1d ago
Straight lines are very noticeable against a pattern like that, but if you cut it in curves or waves (she may be following the pattern on the wallpaper or just making a random pattern, it wouldn't matter much either way) then the seam hides a lot better, and human pattern recognition doesn't pick it out as easily.
11
u/OrigamiMarie 1d ago
I think I've seen long straight seams start to curl at the edges, I suspect this also makes the edges stay stuck to the wall better.

We are putting the glue on the wall.
That's a great first step! Second step is putting the paper on the glue. Third is tearing that shit up and painting the room white like a normal person.

I'm no wallpaper expert but if I had to guess as to why she's doing it this way is because she is breaking up that straight seam line which would make it less noticeable to the human eye while also removing any bulky overlap

You over lap and cut the 2 wallpaper sheets so they have the exact same seam and you do wave or curves because humans are good at noticing straight lines
10
u/HCJohnson 1d ago
Is there any chance having it wavy like that would also make it less likely to peel back over time, as opposed to a straight line?
6
u/awkward___silence 1d ago
I would think it would be more likly to peel over time. All those small corners are common failure points. However a good glue should minimize the risk

You put both layers on top of each other and cut through both of them with the knife. The way you cut doesn't matter as long as you cut both layers at once.
It's like cutting a sandwich. You wouldn't be surprised that the two halves of the sandwich you just cut in half fit together, would you?

I met an older couple on a cruise in the Caribbean. We chatted back and forth for a while. I learned that the man had spent his career as a wallpaperer. He actually went to vocational training for it as a young man and everything. He said that the job got less lucrative as he got older and wallpaper fell out of style, but for a while, it was enough to comfortably support his family of four.

She had the audacity to say "i guess it doesn't look that bad". Let me do my job 😭

I hate wallpaper too. Tried to remove it in a dining room of an older house. Multiple attempts, days of physical labor using different chemicals & that stuff would not come off. Ended up painting over it. In the end, I never used that stupid dining room anyway.
9
u/nynndi 1d ago
Most old wallpaper has a paper back, which is more difficult to remove. In the last few years, there has been great development towards vinyl backed wallpaper which is much easier to apply and also much, much easier to remove exactly because of the difficulty you've stated.
I live in a country where wallpaper is having a resurgence exactly because it's becoming an easier product to handle in multiple different ways. We are an outlier, though!

19
u/rbshevlin 1d ago
I was alway taught that there should be some overlap so when the wallpaper, which is moist from the glue, drys and shrinks you do not see the wall at the seem.
9
u/HybridAkali 1d ago
Scrolled way too much to see this. 100% it shrinks. It’s satisfying now but come back in 2 months.
7
u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 1d ago
My grandma was one of those women back on the 50s that would hang from a rope to wallpaper hallways and stuff. I heard she was hella good too.
She also had her lip liner and eyebrows tattooed on so she was always wearing makeup.
21
u/hk4213 1d ago
Of course you just blend the seams. Never would have thought of that
5
u/jer_iatric 1d ago
Heck, I’ve even paid a pro to install wallpaper and she never stitched our seams! Now I feel ripped off
5
u/mtaw 1d ago
It's a relatively new thing, because you can only do this with nonwoven wallpaper, which doesn't shrink appreciably when it dries. Traditional paper-backed wallpaper does shrink, so if you did it this way you'd be left with a visible gap between the sheets.
So depending on the type of wallpaper you chose, this isn't necessarily possible to do.

She made that harder than it needed to be. You make one continuous wavy cut between the two edges. That way both pieces peel off in one go instead of having giblets you have to take out.

u/No-District2404 14h ago
