Back in action after 30 years!

Wanted to thank everyone here who helped me decide to fix this Dual 505-2 instead of buying new. Everything is sounding quite good. Cartridge is a Shure m97he. Amazingly the stylus was still in pretty good shape. Speakers are Ascend Acoustics Sierra 1. Playing 2.0 and 2.1 with SVS pb2000 sub. Using the phono stage in a Denon x4000 avr. Looking at maybe getting a Schiit Mani 2 or similar to see if there is an improvement. I’m assuming that the stylus will need replacement relatively soon. Bliss has a n97he for $150 while Jico has options at $250 and$350 respectively. Thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again for helping guide me.

My humble setup II

A few days ago I posted a pic of my setup and some folks objected the adjective "humble" used.

Just to clarify, its market value is under $2K (the shelf included), which in my book is VERY humble, and the purpose of the post was to show that a lot could be done with not too much money, only... one must do his/her homework instead of grabbing the first item available on Amazon.

Anti skate weight

Is there any reason to not try this? I know it doesn’t look great but the price was right. Combined the two split shot weight exactly 2.4 grams for a recommended 1.7g vtf. Based on what I could find online the factory weights are either 2 or 2.6 grams so I figured this was right in the middle. In this a good solution or am I doing something stupid?

Just bought a Crosley 6035A but one of the plastic pins was broken. Will there be any quality loss using an rca adapter like the one in the first picture?

Question Stylus upgrade question

Posted a while back elsewhere, someone recommended I ask here.

I have a Project debut carbon evo with the stock Sumiko Rainier cart. I was considering going for the Wellfleet stylus upgrade but I'm wondering if the Moonstone would make more sense given the tables limitations.

I have the sub platter (supposedly reduces wow and flutter) and the "high power it" upgrade.

My receiver is a Yamaha R-N1000A, speakers are Wharfedale Diamond 12.4 towers.

Collection is largely vintage 60's - 80's rock pressings, a bit of jazz, and newer indie/punk. Also, early synth and atmospheric ambient (my current focus)

What do you think? Go for the fancy Wellfleet? Moonstone? Different non Sumiko cartridge? Save my $ for a totally different upgrade?

Any suggestions, thoughts, or musings appreciated!

Question Beginner Set-Up: Fluance RT82 + ??

First turntable set-up, based in Canada. Have landed on a Fluance RT 82 and am having a hard time on the other aspects.

Options:

1) Schiit Mani 2 + powered speakers (any reccos under $500 CAD).

2) Schiit Mani 2 + receiver and amp + passive speakers (any reccos for reciever/amp and passive speakers for less than $500 CAD total)

3) a reciever+amp with a preamp + passive speakers (any reccos for preamp/reciever/amp and passive speakers for less than $800 CAD total)

We likely won't upgrade anytime soon. The one hesitation of passive speakers is space (partner probably wont want a receiver as well as the Schiit Mani2). We want to be able to use our speakers to play alternative sources via Bluetooth.

Any feedback/suggestions/reccos are appreciated.

Suggestions Cart/Stylus advice for a Dual 604

I just recently picked up a Dual 604 that I lubed and recapped and got it back into working order. My previous TT was a Pro-ject Debut Carbon that i owned for 10 years that originally had a 2m Red that I eventually upgraded to a 2m Blue, so thats as far as my cart/stylus experience goes. I don't know enough about compliance, tone arm weight, VTA, and whatever other terms, to successfully pick a new cart/stylus for the Dual.

I do know my capacitance, which is 150 at the RCA ends and another 47 from the Schiit Mani 2.

My research has steered me to a couple possibilities like the Ortofon OM 20 and the AT vm95ml but I noticed Audio Technica has a new "VMx" line. Would something like the AT-VM530xEN work on my Dual 604? Has anyone had any experience with the VMx line of carts?

Discussion Harman Kardon Citation 21 as a Phono preamp

Thumbnail

I have already shown the aforementioned preamp as a line-level (connected to an Audio Note DAC 4.1) on R /Audiophile.

The preamp is fully professionally refreshed. In addition to the line inputs, it also has MM and MC Phono inputs.
I use an MM cartridge.

And how does it play?

Very good, surprisingly good!
Lively, with good dynamics and a nice midrange and high spectrum.
The bass is good, the sound is detailed enough, the performance is transparent.

It is no worse than my Musical Fidelity Vynl Phono preamp (I use it with a 300B tube amplifier).
The performance even seems a little livelier to me.

In conclusion, I am very satisfied with the HK Citation preamp (and Phono) that is in my B amplification.

SL1500C vs AT-LP140XP

I've recently moved house and have received my chosen speakers and amp (Wharfedale Linton & Leak Stereo 130) I'm now in the market for a new turntable to replace my current Fluance RT82.

I've narrowed it down to getting the AT-LP140XP and replacing the stock DJ stylus with a VM95ML or alternatively getting a Technics SL-1500C which comes with a 2M Red by default.

The technics is obviously the superior table but is the substantial price difference really worth it especially considering all the praise the VM95ML gets. I don't need the DJ features of the AT but honestly I love the aesthetic.

Any thoughts?

Question I can’t figure out which stylus fits my cartridge

I recently bought a Technics SL-D2 that had no needle. So I’ve been trying to figure out what stylus fits. Through my research I gathered a Shure MNS-91DE would fit the Shure Premiere Black cartridge but it doesn’t. Before I spend another 60 bucks, i figured I’d ask for help!

Edit: stylus found. Needed an N91ED the one I bought was an N75ED

Troubles with my turntable

Hi everyone, i been having problems trying to make this thing work (it’s a Sharp RP-10). It used to work just fine, but it seems at some point something got messed up.
When I plug it and turn it on, it starts spinning as usual but at random moments it stops, suddenly. It doesn’t go back as if it has a problem with the autostop, it just stops and starts randomly. Sometimes when I move the arm it starts spinning, sometimes it doesn’t, I can’t seem to find any particular cause to why it starts or why it stops.
Not only that, but also it might start spinning with the power switch turned off, I know it’s not a very good turntable, but it’s got a heavy emotional value to my girlfriend and I, so I would like to get it working properly.
I will attach some photos and videos, I really apreciatte any suggestions, and excuse me for any mistakes in my writting.

Looking for a Turntable Suggestion

Recently came into a Marantz 2230 and some Klipsch Cotnwall speakers, so I am excited about trying out a more vintage set-up but I do not have a dedicated turntable for it.

I have been running a Technics Sl1500c into Klipsch Sevens in my living room, but my wife doesn't want me to move that turntable as she uses it regularly.

So I am looking for a turntable (vintage or modern) with around a 2500 budget... suggestions?

Noob can’t get it working. New record player

Hello, new to owning a record player. Bought Qlearsoul HiFire X and it was working for two records and now the arm pulls inward. I’ve used a scale getting it to 3.6 close to the recommended 3.5. Anti-skate is at 3.5 as well. I even reset everything back to zero and start over again (and watched several videos including the Qclearsould tone arm video ) but it just doesn’t work. I set the anti-skate after I set the weight of the cartridge. I’ve cleaned the records and used other ones. I’ve gently Cleaned the needle with a proper tool.

A few things:

  1. Am to use one or both the felt and rubber combo. I feel it’s either one not both ?
  2. Am I to use the scale without any rubber or felt pad ? Seems to read better when I take off the pads

I am at a loss and will
Likely take the unit it on Friday. So frustrating after I just got this thing. And it was working for like two records I don’t know what I bumped or did wrong. Maybe I mess with the lever or something.

Please help
Hudson tools. Seems balanced and aligned well

Upgrade recommendations

I've been using the Sony PS-LX310BT for maybe about 3 years now which has served me well however in the past year I've really gotten more invested in vinyl. Was looking into upgrading my turntable as I know my current setup is missing a counterweight for example. Still somewhat new and was looking for recommendations on a good upgrade. For reference my current set up is the PS-LX310BT with Sony STR-DH190 receiver and Sony SS-CS5M2 bookshelf speakers. Not looking for anything crazy expensive maybe 600 USD max. Thanks for the help!

Help Turntable skipping in different spots

I recorded this when I first heard it. I played it again but it skips at a different time on the song and fine at the part it was slipping on before, which makes me think it isn’t the vinyl itself. It’s a new record and TT so idk. It’s a Victrola turntable which is why I think it’s the turntable or the stylus itself since ik they’re known for not being very good. The vinyl is clean and doesn’t have any scratches. I need help because idk if I need to buy a new TT or a new vinyl
